Chapter 18: Sibling love is a thing, you know

Three days had passed since Kian's outburst.

They only had a week and a half. How were they going to increase Lan Wei's cultivation before the start of the trial?

Jia Xinyue learnt one thing - reading about weak to strong main characters were great, but actually being one? So much harder than she thought.

But were they the main characters? Would this world even turn out like a novel?

Well, it certainly had the setting - transmigration after death to a new world; the mentioned new world has a badass cultivating system just like the ones in novels.

Jia Xinyue continued pacing. She had no ways to contact Kian. She could only wait for him to come back before she would talk to him.

She was mystified. Kian looked like his normal self when he first came in… so what happened? He was all flowers and smiles as he announced the successful purge of the poison.

Puberty? Mood swings?

Granted, not all teenagers had intense mood swings, but Kian should be just starting puberty. No matter how mature he seemed, he was still just a child at heart.

Jia Xinyue was at a loss for words.

That brat, leaving her inside this confined space for another three days! How could he abandon his older sister…

Jia Xinyue decided to apologise when he came back.

After all, he had to come back.

He had to, if he wanted the plan to work.

So, she'll just wait here patiently.

[Who am I kidding, I don't have that much patience. Time for more cat videos!]

She pulled up her cat videos and snuggled on the several large blankets and pillows on the floor. Kian bought her the pillows after she whined about "sore backs and do you want this grandma to die?"

Just as she was about to press play, a zap came from behind her.

The air thickened as neither one of them acknowledged the other. Jia Xinyue was the older one, she was supposed to set a good example, so she ignored the awkwardness, and stood up.

Without any other words, she hugged Kian. He stiffened a bit, then relaxed into her embrace.

Jia Xinyue did have to admit…

She was kind of naggy. Like a Mom Friend™, but worse. Maybe like an Asian mom, who found it hard to express feelings for her child.

Plus, Kian was right too. She didn't do much, just laze around and maybe search for some information. Recently, she hadn't even been looking for any new screens, making her current space a nest.

"I'm sorry. I know I can be kind of naggy." She said quietly.

"Me too. I shouldn't have yelled at you. You're not useless, you find all the information. Like logistics," He laughed a bit.

"What agent can survive without their logistics team?"

"Certainly not ours, obviously I do all the work here." Jia Xinyue replied jokingly.

The tension died down, and Jia Xinyue released a sigh of relief.

But that wasn't enough. She needed to get to the root of this, find out why he was upset.

She dragged him over to her blanket fort and told him to sit. He complied, sitting gingerly on the edge of the pile, uncertain of what she wanted.

"Something happened during the process, didn't it?" She stated.

Kian's eyes widened, staring at her in disbelief.

She hit the nail right on the head. Something did happen when he was purging the poison.

"You can tell me. I'm your older sister. I will always be here to listen to any worries." She said, her eyes softening as she looked at Kian.

Even if they weren't blood related, couldn't they still be a family? She would become the best older sister he's had.

"You can always rely on me."

Kian looked at her, stunned. He fidgeted a bit, playing with the edge of his clothes.

"I….Sure." He mumbled.

Jia Xinyue smiled.

"It wasn't much. Just that the process was a lot more painful than I'd expected." He said, eyes still downcast and still fidgeting.

Of course.

How did she not think of that? There had to be a price to pay for something so miraculous. Nothing comes for free.

How much pain had he been in?

She hugged him once more, and whispered,

"You did a good job."

Siblings have a love-hate relationship. Some days, you hate them to bits and just want to smack them, and other days, you wouldn't give them up for the world. Well, maybe for a piece of chip during those "hate" days, but that's another story.

And the only people allowed to bully your sibling was you.

Jia Xinyue felt like that. She would be the only one to bully Kian, no one else could!

Otherwise, wouldn't she be a bad sister then?

But they still had to hurry. There were other things at hand, such as the trial.

"Has the preparations been finished?" She asked.

Kian nodded, determination hidden in his eyes.

He had been training diligently over the past three days, even if he didn't go back to the system, he couldn't put the quest at stake.

Kian had secretly purchased a testing stone, used for testing a person's basic talent level. The higher a person's talent, the faster they would cultivate. Lower level talents could reach higher levels, but it was much harder and took longer.

For example, a violet talent would reach violet level much faster than a orange talent would.

There were 9 different colours, for 9 different levels, and therefore, 9 different talents.

Majority of the population were either yellow or orange, with the highest being a violet talent in recent years. Funnily enough, this violet talent was actually Lan Wei's own cousin, Lan Guang Ning.

Lan Wei had done this already, but his initial results was terrible, branding him with the label 'waste' due to his incredibly low talent. It was even lower than yellow level, which was the lowest level of talent, the stone barely flickering, a tiny wisp of a pale yellow.

This was obviously due to the work of the Spirit Flower poison, which had damaged Lan Wei's body enough to wipe out any future potential.

Now, with the poison finally gone, he could try again.

He sat in a lotus position, cradling the testing stone with both his hands. He concentrated, and tried to push energy into the stone.

A rush of a cool wave seemed to flow throughout his body, and into the stone.

The stone lit up, shining like a beacon.

Thankfully, Kian had to foresight to lock himself in a secluded corner once more.

The colour quickly changed from a bright yellow, into orange, red, green, blue, slowing down slightly at violet, and finally reaching a deep, pulsing shade of purple.

Kian had been extremely surprised.

No wonder Jia Xinyue described it as one of the most miraculous plants. It cleansed his entire body and propelled his talent level.

A purple talent!

And so, Kian had sat down and trained, gathering energy in his core.

Kian had heard many other names for these levels, some confusing, some long, some just completely outdated. Colours was the way everyone remembered them.

Each colour was separated into 9 levels.

The way cultivation worked here, was that no one was allowed to learn from books until you reach the 5th level of orange. Until then, you had to work on gathering energy.

Some people would train for half their entire lives, just to reach the 5th level. Just so they could go to a nearby sect or school to learn the arts.

The moment you reached 5th level, you gained respect.

Before that, people would just fight with their fists. The higher level you were and the higher colour, the stronger your physical body would be.

Kian found that Lan Wei's body shot up from the 1st level of yellow, to the 9th level within two days.

He relayed this series of events to Jia Xinyue, who nodded. Her eyes were sparkling.

"We have a week and a half. We can do this." She said.

Kian nodded.

"Let's do this." They both said in unison.
