Chapter 37: Chapter 37 : It's Hot Outside
We back. That last chapter was bad, I'll admit it, but just deal with it. lol. We gonna start back strong now. Esketit.

"Rei!!! Watch out!!!" Kakashi streamed across the hot ground, barely clipping his feet in the hot mess.
A mound of hot lava spewed into the opening, Kakashi barely got to her. "Alright." He said. "Lets try to hold it off as long as we can. If we can't, we'll help the remaining civilians escape. Got it?" Kakashi could barely hear himself think over the chaos.
"Yes Sir." Rei was out of breath. Smoke inhalation beat at her lungs. Black soot stained her sweaty face along with her clothes. The sky deemed itself a scene from hell. It was black for miles. Heat crossed over everyone while the yelling and commands of distant messengers ordered evacuation.
Just by chance, Kakashi and Rei had strolled into a town, perched on the edge of a volcano. It had been dormant for years, but not anymore. During the dead of night, eruption shook the earth, screaming children were woken up, and panic rose. There was no time for backup despite Kakashi and Rei being the only ninja. They had to do this with or without help. As much as they could handle. But even with all the effort in the world, no one could control mother nature.
The volcano, only 300 yards from the town, blew once more. Hot molten rock struck the ground, lava flowed its way towards civilization.
Kakashi acted first. "Water Style : Water Dragon Jutsu!"
Even with all his might, the lack of a water source and the scorching heat in the air hindered his jutsu considerably, but he still managed to clear a nice portion.
Rei followed with the same jutsu. Just like Kakashi taught her and Just like her mother, Rei's natural attraction to water style flourished. Only weeks with that jutsu under her belt and it was just as fierce as Kakashi's.
Clearing this mess took all the chakra in the world. Kakashi was drained. With Rei's pit of Uzumaki chakra by his side, it still wasn't enough. The two leaf ninja were continuously being pushed back. In fight or flight, every last bit of chakra was utilized. For his last attempt, Kakashi heaved. "Earth Style : Trench!"
All he could manage was a six feet deep crater spanning twenty feet long. To add to the despair, another eruption inevitably pushed them back more.
"Kakashi Sensei!!!" Rei dodged incoming burns. "There is no way we can hold this!!!"
He wasn't going to argue.
"OKAY!! FALL BACK TO THE TOWN. GO THROUGH THE HOUSES AS FAST AS YOU CAN. SAVE ANYONE YOU FIND!!"
Both ninja flickered away, barely dodging the incoming tsunami of flames. The temperature in the air was already reaching unbearable levels. When the lava approached the town, some homes immediately caught fire, just from heat.
Ten minutes later...
The lave began to take control. With half the village on fire, Kakashi found Rei and moved across the river on the opposite side of the village carrying civilians. Everyone they could find was now safe. They met with the Mayor. Many were being treated for burns. Kakashi and Rei were barely breathing and covered black.
The mayor met them immediately. "Please!! Ninja!!" He fell to his knees. "My neighbors lost their youngest in the chaos. Could you please go back for her. Please."
The Mayor seemed surprised by their immediate compliance.
"Sensei, I'll go. You stay here and make sure everyone stays safe."
Kakashi didn't know how to feel about that. Was she strong enough to be giving him orders?
"Wait! Rei!!"
Before Kakashi could chase her, something else came to his attention.

Rei pushed through the flames. Her red eyebrows were now nonexistent. The heat killed her face. She wheezed and coughed up her lungs while she located the right home through the smoke. She kicked down the door and was met with roaring flames. She couldn't get inside.
"HELLO!!! IS ANYONE THERE!!!" She yelled with all she could. Her voice also suffered from the constant smoky strain.
"I'M UP HERE!! HELP! PLEASE!" A distressed voice of a child caught her ear. She had to find a way. Anything to get to the girl. Rei climbed the wall, towards the sound of the voice. A small window stood between the little girl and her rescuer. Rei broke through the glass with a kunai and peered through.
"I'm RIGHT HERE!" The girl was pinned to the ground by a fallen rafter. The boards were burning closer and closer to her body.
"HANG ON!!" Rei acted out of habit. Her chains shot from the waist, into the window. She couldn't fit herself through the tiny space. This was the next best thing. Her red chains cut through the boards, releasing the child.
"Come on! This way! I'll pull you through the window! HURRY!" Rei held her arms through the tiny space.
The kid struggled. Her feet were badly burned, but she made it. Rei secured her in her hands, just in time. But before Rei could smuggle the kid through the window, the building came crashing down. Taking Rei and the child down with it.

"Everyone! Be quiet!" Kakashi fiercely ordered the villagers to a silence. But he felt something off the charts. He didn't have time to be nice.
"Who's there!" Kakashi stood tall, even with the little chakra he had. Something wasn't right. Surrounded by tons of people, he searched over and over. Back and forth. A chill ran through his spine. He rushed forward, turning behind him, but not before a kunai lodged itself deep into his shoulder. If he didn't sense that even a little, he'd be dead.
Kakashi picked up a deathly female whisper. "Just as expected. Copy Ninja."
Never mind that, he didn't feel anything at all now. Just faint surges of killing intent, spreading through the entire crowd. Everyone noticed Kakashi's struggle and panicked. The mayor quickly moved everyone into a circle, a little distance from Kakashi while he stood behind him.
"What's happening?" The mayor asked.
"That's what I'd like to know." The mayor cringed as Kakashi removed the knife from his shoulder.
Both stood around. Kakashi glared at the crowd. Whoever was tormenting him, was using the innocent as his hiding place.
The mayor whispered, "Here, I'm no ninja, but I grew up in the Hidden Cloud. I at least have this much knowledge."
Kakashi felt lighter. The Mayor was giving him chakra. "Thanks old man." Kakashi revealed his sharingan. This fight was just beginning.

Note: This was fun. I just decided to hop right into it. This will be handled way better than Sasuke's trip. lol. I think that was a descent chapter to return to. I planned everything out now so yay me. I wanted some tension and a little action, some of you might be surprised at how quickly Rei progressed in the next chapter. She's a badass, just saying. She'll get some development later and Kakashi too. And that development will be perfect to handle a certain brooding MC named *cough* Kenji. I hope you are yearning to read more now. hehe. Well, I'm out. YERRR!
