Chapter 11: Bastard
From the arrest door sounded a dull thump.
Anita looked at the door.
"This is Maria, the cleaning lady, the only one besides my husband, who knows that I am here with you. You must not tell anyone about our conversation. Mexico is a strange and corrupt country, we can not take any chances. I swear to you by the eyes of my children that I'm going to get you out of jail. I only ask you for the necessary patience."
Laila continued to stare at Anita in disbelief.
Anita got up.
"We do not have much time left. My husband can not unnecessarily prolong the morning meeting without his men becoming suspicious. He always keeps meticulous timetables and never deviates. But I still have a request for you."
Laila , who had started eating the salami bun again, raised his eyebrows questioningly.
Anita shifted uneasily from one leg to the other.
"Please do not think me a pervert, but I need to know. My husband steadfastly refuses to tell me anything about it. How did you end the life of this bastard"
She thought for a moment.
Anita was so small and petite.
Surely she was a loving and devoted mother to her children.
She seemed so unencumbered by the evil in the world.
Laila decided it should stay that way and responded in a squeezed voice to Anita's question.
"He paid for everything he did to her children and Jessica. Jessica was like a sister to me. Believe me, I reserved a place in hell with his blood that night. You do not have to know more."
Anita nodded her head briefly and struck three times against the door.
"I'll thank you if you're free."
With these words she stepped through the door opened by Maria.
Laila tilted her head back and blew her breath against her forehead with her lower lip pressed forward.
Her situation had taken an unpredictable turn.
Would fate still be good with her?
