Chapter 3: Father's search and Aunt's lessons of love and life as a red tailed hawk

03. Father's search and Aunt's lessons of love and life as a red tailed hawk

Everyday, the father would fly high into the sky and try to find his wife, but everyday he was dissapointed. The days turned into weeks and the weeks turned into months and Metsu was growing older and much bigger. She was starting to grow strong feather on her wings and when she flapped her wings, she could make a lot of wind. One day after her father had returned from flying high in the sky she saw how sad he was and for the first time, she started to fell sorry for him and asked,

"Father, what if mother never comes back?"

Her father replaid, "Do not think about that, my daughter, she will come back."

"But father, she has been gone for a long time and Iam all grown up now You see, I can fly from branch to branch now."

Her father laughed and said, "Metsu, you are my beautiful daughter and I am very proud of you, but you are far from grown up. You are not really flying you are just hopping from branch to branch. I know you think you are grown up and you have learned a lot from me, but you still have much to learn from your mother. But Since you are older, I will get a friend to watch you while I go look for your mother."

With that,he flew high into the sky and made strange noise as loud as he could. It was a strange shriengking call that Metsu had never heard. For Hours, her father flew around and around in the sky calling and calling. Later that day, she heard a faint answer to her father's call. Soon the answer become louder and shortly, another red tailed hawk appeared. The other hawk flew to her father and, together, they both flew back to the nest.

"Metsu."her father said,"this is your aunty. She will watch over you while I am away, I will go look for your mother and I will come back tomorrow."

Metsu said, "Father , I am afraid you will never come back."

Her father replied, "Don't worry, I will make sure that I can come back, in the meantime, your aunty will take good your care of you."

With that and a log parting hug, her fater flew away being careful not to let Metsu see tears in the eyes.

Metsu said to the aunt, "Aunty ,thank you for staying with me,but really, I am all grown up now and I do not need anyone to look after me."

The Aunt replied with smilling eyes, "Young Metsu, you cannot even fly right now. I will look around the tree here get you something to eat."

Metsu replied, " Aunty, stay with me for a little bit, I have never seen another red tailed Hawk and I am not hungry. Will you stay and talk to me for a little while?"

" Of course." Replied her aunt, "What would you like to talk about?"

Metsu said, "My father it so sad, and I am sad too. But soon I will grow up and I will leave the nest anyway. I do not know what father will do. He does not have a wife anymore, will he get another one?"

Suddenly, her Aunt's smilling eyes were not smiling anymore and Metsu knew that she had said something terribly wrong.

"Metsu,"said her aunt stemly, "Never say that to your father. We are Red Tailed Hawks, and when we get married, we marry for life. Your father will search for your mother for the rest of his life. Unless he knows your mother is dead, he will never ever stop looking for her. He loves her with a love that you will never understand until youn find your own true love. He loves her as no other creature on earth can love another. And if he never finds her, he will search until the day he dies. One day,you will be grown up and leave the nest to find your own husband. When that day comes, your father will let you go and be happy for you. But, when you leave remember that because he is a Red Tailed Hawk and the proudest of birds, and unless he finds your mother, he will be alone for the rest of his life. Even now, I know that my husband misses me, and I miss him. But we must help your father so that he can search for your mother. If I lost my husband, I could never bear the pain and so I am helping your father by watching over you. My husband is watching my baby until I return and even though it has only been one day, I miss him ver much and the pain is terrible."

And so the days went by as Metsu's aunt continued to watch over Metsu, as her father would fly away every morning only to return every night in sorrow. Metsu missed her mother but it was even worse to see the sorrow in her father's eyes and feel the pain in his heart when he hugged her everyday.

While all this was going on, Metsu's mother was living with the boy and his sister. Everyday, he would go out and shoot some rabbits or squirrels and feed the hawk. After a few months, the wing started to heal and she was soon flapping around the cage. The boy's sister said,

"It Looks like this hawk is ready to be free. It is a pity as I will miss having her around."

The boys said, "Let us ask father if he thinks she is ready."

And so they brought their father to look at he hawk.

The father said. " I think you are right, it look like you have cared for her very well. Tomorrow, we will take her out to field where you found her and let her go."

The sister said, "Must we let her go father? I really like her."

The father replied, "Of course, we must. Besides, I get the feeling, that someone else might be missing her more than you will."
