Chapter 2: 02. The Semethe's
Francis was an only son of the late Khanare and Mampho. He was given an English name because his father wanted him to soar with eagles in life. He worked hard in the mines of Kolo in Mafeteng district, therefore, his family became the richest.
However, Francis grew up spoilt and almost lost everything when his parents died. He therefore learnt to be tough and cover all mistakes he did in the past. His uncles and one aunt were all interested in his father's wealth except for his cousin who became his sister. Perhaps it was because his uncle Phefo was a very peaceful person on his lifetime before joining his ancestors.
Francis learnt that Family does not only flow through blood but sterms from an individual's choices in life.
He worked hard in his life, and had a very beautiful wife, 'Mabohlokoa who respected and loved him. His family had no common fights common among many families. most of the villagers even argued that his wife had fed him 1."Phehla". However, he loved his wife way too much to endure seeing her hurt.
He never complained when his wife couldn't give him a child, therefore this daughter of his was a blessing, she became a light in his life. He therefore named her "Leseli" which means light. He prayed that she would look like her mother because although he was such a model, his looks were as if they were thrown to him.
Today the entire Semethe family and the village are celebrating the birth of a girl, some already want to approach her father 2."ho beha nkho selibeng" but they could feel in his words that his daughter was not set to generate any income but would choose her own path.
Mafika: "Today we are gathered here to celebrate the birth of a girl to Francis and 'Mabohlokoa. she is a week old and therefore could come out to meet everyone, However, she has to stay indoors until she is three months"
People started talking among themselves. They wondered why this Leseli couldn't come out. Some even argued that she was a child given by Ntili a local myth that was known to grant children to barren women. one woman said " I heard that even the aunts and uncles are not allowed to see this child", the other said "hey 'Mannyeo I'm here for meat. you know nobody can grow it, but since Francis is willing to give us 3.mocho, let's stop gossiping.
on that day, there were allulations within the village, some celebrating free meat, some being able to enter a paved yard for the first time in their life, some to see the drama between Francis and his Family.
when his uncle Thupa stood to give a speech, people started shouting. This due to the fact that he turned the entire speech into showing people that he was more prominent than his niece whom he said was weak enough to produce no kids for twenty years.
when food came out, people couldn't stop their exclamations. The food was cooked in a modern way, even the stew was made in a way they had never seen. The taste was so magnificent they felt that this food was bough from some famous hotel. Little did they know that the food was prepared by the new mother because she was afraid they would mock her husband if things failed.
After the ceremony, those who drank beer were told that their drinks have been prepared in a local bar, only a few were allowed to enjoy soghurm beer with the family. within the remain circle, none was related to Francis through blood, but they were his brothers and seniors according to the way they treated him. These few were lucky enough to hold the princess.
