Chapter 10: The Impossible Story(1)

Bain saw Avril still at his mention of his strength being in the Profound Qi realms. He looked at her closely, hoping his strength hadn't scared her. He looked at her face, noticing that her eyes got huge, like saucer plates. Her pupils dilated till she had almost no iris left, suddenly he saw her tremble, and stiffen. The next thing he new she went limp, hurtling straight for the ground. He rushed in, barely getting his arms under her before she hit the ground. Bain knelt down with Avril in his arms.

"Avril?" Bain said, thinking she might be playing with him again he said in a rough tone" Avril, this isn't funny." He waited for a response. He looked at her feeling unsettled. She had to be playing with him, right?

" Avril, please stop playing around. I'm sorry ok? I shouldn't have been looking through your things...." Bain looked at her, hoping for her to start laughing hysterically at him. Still no response. His feeling of dread rose higher. He felt a tight squeeze around his heart. He looked at Avril, quickly taking her pulse. Everything felt normal as far as he could tell. But he knew that his rudimentary battlefield healing couldn't help with something that he couldn't touch physically. Bain felt the squeeze of his heart again, like a troll had wrapped its hand around it and was slowly crushing it. Why did it feel like this? He thought as he looked down at Avrils' unusually pale face and lips. He should bring her to a doctor, Bain thought to himself. If I do that though, wont everyone know that I'm here. What about her reputation? If a man of unknown origin came out of her room with her in this state, she would be ruined. Ill wait a bit longer to see if she wakes up. he decided. He gently held her in his arms. I should put her on the bed. But as Bain released her onto her bed, carefully about to slide his arms out he felt the little fox move. She mewled pathetically, her ears pressing down flat against her soft white hair. Her fluffy tail suddenly twined up his arm, making him stop from pulling back. She looks so lonely he thought, I cant just leave her like this. Bain drew back into Avril, holding her delicately. His heart gave a loud thump as she gently nuzzled into his chest, sighing slightly. Maybe I need to go to the doctor Bain thought. His heart was acting unstable, one minute he felt like he couldn't breathe cause it was beating so fast, the next it felt like it was being crushed inside his chest, and now it was thumping so hard he felt like it was going to burst out of his chest cavity. This all within an hour too. He looked down worriedly at his little fox, hoping she would wake up soon. After about 3 minutes, he saw her eyes start to flutter open. Her pale golden eyes locked onto his as she looked up.

"Whats wrong?" was the first thing that Bain heard out of his little foxes mouth. Relief washed over him as he heard her voice, only to be replaced by anger at her. He was so scared she had been hurt. He had been in countless battles, seen millions of men murdered for the name of one man. Been tortured to the brink of death, only to be thrown back onto the battlefield to see more pointless death and destruction. But never in his entire life had Bain been truly terrified, right until the moment he thought something was truly wrong with this little fox he held in his arms. That terrified him more than anything he had ever witnessed, was seeing this fox collapse like that.

"Yes, something is definitely wrong! You scared me to DEATH!!!!!" Bain bellowed at Avril. He looked at her expecting to see anger, or sadness, or maybe even that mischievous look Avril had when she was playing a trick. But he looked at her, to see she was genuinely confused. That's such an odd thing to be confused about. Bain thought as he looked down at her. Of course someone would get scared at someone else blacking out in front of them. Its almost like no ones ever cared before if she was hurt....But that cant be right? She's like a princess, if she got so much as a hang nail the whole clan would be devastated.

" You don't need to fuss so much, its only a tiny blackout. You caught me, so I didn't even get bruised." She said in a shy tone. Like she wasn't used to people paying attention to when she blacked out. Bain narrowed his eyes dangerously, that wasn't a princess thing to say. The normal thing this girl would do was make a huge deal out of it. Something was fishy with this whole situation. And he was gonna get to the bottom of it, one way or the other. As he thought this he noticed Avril looking at him as if contemplating something. She tiredly sighed.

" Bain, I know you have a lot of questions, but for now, lets just go get some breakfast." Avril said, looking like the entire world rested on her shoulders. Bain felt sad to see Avril look as though she had an endless chain of problems following her around. He quietly agreed. Lifting her up Bain started to move towards the window, scanning with his Qi to see where the guards were at the moment. Seeing the coast was clear Bain opened the window with his foot. Avril looked at him oddly.

"Whats wrong?" Bain asked concernedly.

"Bain, put me down. I'm fine, I don't need you carrying me around like a fragile doll!" Avril said in a low tone. Bain looked at her, she was flushed red from her cheeks all the way to her neck. She was embarrassed to be carried like this Bain realized. Though he didn't know why she would be, it wasn't like anyone was going to see them.

"Don't worry, I used my Weaver spell so no one can see us." He said trying to alleviate what he thought was the problem.

"Bain, the problem is that your holding my like I'm made out of glass. I can walk on my own two feet, thank you very much."

" Little fox, I just saw you faint right before me. I don't wanna have to play catch again"

"Well you won't, cause I wont faint like that again."

"Good little fox, but I'm still not putting you down. End of discussion." Bain said in a voice that brooked no argument.

"But why?" Avril whined. To be honest with himself, Bain still felt shaken up about the whole ordeal. He had never been so scared. He didn't think he could put his little fox down right now. He wanted to hold her to make sure she was safe and sound in his arms. However he said none of this to Avril, acting like he hadn't heard a word of what she said. Despite her protest his little fox was very still in his arms. He knew she was tired, and overtaxed from what happened. As he padded down the street he wondered what she would tell him today?
