Chapter 5: Chapter 5 Slurpy

There was a distant rumble and Dustin and Olivia immediately ducked under an awning of branches woven together. Jake shook his head at their spooked looks, and waved for them to follow him as he ducked into another doorway across the road. No rain seemed to be imminent so they followed quickly.

"It's hard to lose those habits from the last planet," murmured Olivia as they glanced around the new room, looking for Jake.

The back wall of this room seemed to be actual rock, and Dustin wondered if they built the city into the crevasse of a chasm, or if something had happened. Too much damage from time and plant growth made it possible to figure it out just from a visual inspection. Jake was waiting for them by another hole in the left wall. Along the right wall a large fleshy plant lay in a shallow puddle of water.

"Stay away from it. It's dangerous," Jake warned as he ducked into the hole.

Black roots spread throughout the water, holding it high into the air. Its base was a good foot in diameter, and it had a bulbous growth on the surface. It pulsed as if breathing as they got closer, and Dustin wondered if it really were plant, or if it were some kind of hybrid. He was really tempted to get a sample to add to his PED.

"Come on, Dustin. We're not in a race for anything, we'll have a chance to get samples after we eat."

Nodding to himself, he followed Olivia through the hole in the wall.

They climbed more roots and branches, vines and stairway-remains, until they reached the top floor. Glancing back down, Dustin wasn't sure how many floors up they were. Jake pulled a hidden rope, and a part of the wall before them slid out of the way.

Inside were the remains of what had once been a living room. There was a couch in the middle of the room, reduced to rotten wood and springs, covered in a few hides. Along one wall, a T.V. stood on a stand, covered in so much grime that it would be impossible to watch anything if it could work. Against the far wall were two large windows, broken and open to the elements. Dirt that had blown in on the wind had piled up around the windows, and a thick healthy growth of plants occupied that side of the room.

Jake ignored all of it, turning to the right and heading down a hall. He pulled another rope, almost as an afterthought, as he passed it. The door behind them closed, locking them in. Dustin wasn't sure what the floor was made of, but it seemed very stable, despite its age. He wondered if the material the buildings had been made of were the only reason they still stood.

Stepping into the next room, Jake was sitting at a table, grinning and pointing at an actual wood burning stove. Based on the crap shoved into it, he had tried to start it up himself countless times, but never succeeded.

As Olivia started digging it all out with a metal poker she found, Dustin set his bag against the wall, and took the stick of fish. Jake watched in fascination, as he took a knife that was laying on the counter and after cleaning it, began to clean the fish.

"Why do you do it like that?" asked Jake, pointing at the first couple of cuts he had made.

"Well, I don't like to eat fish heads, so I cut them off. Also, these spines and fins don't taste very good."

Jake nodded as if that made sense. When he pulled out the guts, they came all as one single chunk. This fascinated Jake and he carefully examined it before getting a pan from a sink and sliding all of the discarded parts into it. As Dustin finished each fish, Jake would slide the discarded parts into his pan, until it was almost overflowing.

"What do you plan to do with that?" asked Olivia. She was sitting on a wooden stool by the stove, poking the fire that burned brightly in the oven.

"The slurpy gets mean if I don't feed it. It's been a while since I haven't found much to eat. This will make it very happy."

"Slurpy?" asked Olivia, partly amused.

"The monster plant on the bottom floor."

"Why do you call it slurpy?" asked Dustin, pausing as he cut the fish into smaller chunks.

"That's the noise it makes when it eats," said Jake. He started scooting the cut fish into a pan that might have been clean. Then he took it over to the oven and proudly placed it on top of the stove.

Olivia glanced at Dustin and he shrugged. There was a sudden flash of lightening, followed by a loud crash of thunder. Within minutes a downpour of rain lashed at the window on the other side of the room. They all watched it for a moment, until the sound of the fish sizzling in the pan, drew them back to supper.

"Does it rain like that often?" asked Dustin.

"Yea," said Jake, poking around in a drawer and pulling out a large metal spoon. He happily started scooting the pieces around in the pan, and flipped them so often it was a wonder they were able to cook at all.

Olivia watched in silence, but Dustin was having a grand time. He could imagine his own kids doing that someday. He had loved showing him how to clean a fish. Sneaking a glance at Olivia, he wondered if she would ever be willing to start a family with him, but he sighed as he turned back to slide the rest of the fish into another pan. They had to find a home first. This place was great, in that every second was filled with life or death situations, but he wanted a home where he could work on things, have air conditioning, and serf the web in search of ideas. Maybe even play a few video games.

As the fish started to get done, so they could eat, he turned to his bag. He was overcome with the need to tinker. Pulling pieces out, Jake almost fell out of his chair with a strangled cry.

"What are you doing with that??" he shrieked.

"I intend to take it apart and figure out how it works." Dustin showed him how it wasn't active.

Jake moved to the other side of Olivia to finish eating. He didn't seem to care for Dustin's hobby, much to Olivia's amusement. She took over cooking the fish as Dustin became lost in his tinkering.

The programming was spread out throughout the head and chest. He was glad he kept them together in one piece. Carefully removing certain components, he discovered that they were nanobots, too, only a different kind. As he reached for another component, there was a spark and he found himself on the floor, with Olivia over him, shaking him and calling his name.

Jake is probably not going to follow Dustin with a tech career. Poor Dustin.

Chapter 6: Chapter 6 PED Temp Fix

"Damn! I shouldn't have touched that!" Dustin held his head in his hands. His PED was having trouble fixing the damage from the shock, and he had a raging headache.

"Maybe eating something will help?" offered Olivia, putting a plate of cooked fish in front of him.

As the smell drifted up to him, he found himself on his knees throwing up everywhere.

"Just evolve already and that should fix it!" cried Olivia, moving towards the window in disgust.

"What's the matter?" asked Jake, looking back and forth between them. "You don't have a sickness in you, do you?"

"No, the shock messed me up. Alright," he said, climbing to his feet, shaky and queasy.

'PED, initiate an evolution to fix whatever's wrong with me."

(NO DAMAGE IS REGISTERING AFTER SCANNING YOU, WHAT DAMAGE DO YOU PERCIEVE?)

'I have a nasty headache and am getting sick like I have a concussion or something.'

(INITIATING EVOLUTION. DESPITE LACK OF EVIDENCE, PERHAPS THIS WILL FIX THE ISSUES.)

Dustin immediately felt relief, but as he turned to look at the others, they had such odd expressions on their faces, that he looked down at himself to see what was wrong. Ridged scales covered his body, and he looked more like a miniature velociraptor, than a man.

'PED? What Happened?'

(UNKNOWN. EVOLUTION IS SHOWING INCOMPLETE. HAVE YOU FINISHED?)

'How the hell am I supposed to know, and why the hell do you not know?!'

(THERE SEEMS TO BE SOME KIND OF INTERFERENCE IN MY OPERATION. I AM SORRY.)

"Dustin? My PED is giving me some god-awful readings. It keeps wanting to know if I want to initiate a change!"

"There seems to be something going on with them," he gurgled.

She stared at him for a moment, and he wondered if she had understood him. He was just about to open his mouth, to say it again, when she shook her head.

"There is no way in hell I am going to let that happen. You either disable this thing or fix it, before I rip my arm off!"

He wondered what it had said, but decided not to ask. Waving her over, he flipped the top open with his tiny inefficient hands.

'PED is there any way you could give me real hands? I need to see if I can tweak things a bit?'

(ATTEMPTING EVOLUTION)

He gritted his teeth. His hands grew and became more alien, with long claws, but at least he could manipulate things easier. Flipping a few things around, he quickly realized the solar event was affecting them way more than he had thought possible. Was that why there weren't any tech things here? Maybe this sun threw a lot of solar storms around.

"There, that should keep it from trying to initiate anything," he managed to enunciate, and she nodded, flipping it shut herself.

"I'm going to go feed Slurpy," Jake said, sliding out of his chair and grabbing the pan of fish scraps.

Dustin eyed them, feeling very hungry all of a sudden. Turning to his plate of cooked fish, he opted to eat it instead.

"I'll go with him, just try not to kill yourself again," said Olivia, popping the last of her fish in her mouth, and stepping around the pile of vomit. It was starting to stink, and Dustin figured he probably should clean that up.

They had only been gone a few minutes, and he had just finished cleaning up the mess. The nanobots were fascinating, taking almost all of his attention. A nagging feeling was bothering him. The last time he had lost sight of Olivia, she had been kidnapped and killed. He knew the Josagn weren't on this planet, but he still wanted to check on them and make sure they were okay. What if those robots had returned?

He managed to get everything packed up, and had just struggled to get the door open, when they returned, looking excited about their trip. He was furious.

'PED, I have got to have a better body than this!'

(INITIATING EVOLUTION)

He grew in height, but his arms and legs returned to something resembling more human. His skin was blue, but he could live with that. The look on Olivia's face made him think he would need to change it, though. Glancing in a broken mirror, he immediately saw why. He had no mouth, and his nose had been reduced to two small slits. His eyes had turned pure black, and his pupils filled his eyes.

'PED,' he thought.

(INITIATING EVOLUTION)

As he watched, he shrunk and his facial features almost went back to normal human. He could have almost passed for his old self. His hair was back to brown, as were his eyes. His hands were normal and everything seemed to be alright. His clothes were torn to shreds though. And as he tried to tie his pants around himself, he realized what was missing.

'PED!'

(OOPS!)

The resulting evolution had him growing a box-shaped face, with huge mandibles sprouting from either cheek. His twig and berries were back though. He would live with the bug face and just avoid mirrors.

This was beyond ridiculous. He went to the table and dumped his bag out. He wasn't getting up until he had figured out how these damn nanobots worked and got the PED's fixed. Even when he found his knees bent the wrong way, he didn't stop.

Jake couldn't help but stare, and Olivia moved to a window to watch it rain.

Several hours later, he had it figured out. The rain had stopped, and insects were singing in the dark. He had moved next to the wood stove to use the light from the fire to keep working, but he was sure he had it. Now it was time to incorporate the things into the PED and get it fixed.

Dawn was breaking, his back was killing him, and his eyes were red-rimmed and drooped from exhaustion, but he was sure he had it fixed.

'PED, initiate evolution into lizard under human form.'

(INITIATING EVOLUTION)

He watched with relief as his knees and other oddities disappeared. The scales returned briefly, to be covered by skin once again.

(EVOLUTION COMPLETE)

He looked in the mirror and saw his old face. It had lines from stress, but he recognized it as his. He needed a shower and a nap.

"What did you have to do to get it to finally work?" asked Olivia, stretching from her spot on the floor where she had finally fallen asleep.

"The electromagnetic interference from the solar storm, was messing with it, so I had the nanobots form a faraday cage around it, before they were fried too."

"Wait, what do you mean they were fried too? Why are the robots not going crazy?"

"They produce a field around themselves that prevents the vast majority of the radiation from affecting them. I wasn't able to reproduce it without incorporating more things in, and I wanted my PED fixed now. This will be a temporary fix until I can finish repairs."

"I'll hold off on getting mine fixed until you can do it all at once."

"You're not worried about needing to evolve?" he asked, surprised.

"I shouldn't need to evolve into anything here. There's not a shit-ton of things trying to kill me. This form should protect me well enough from the robots."

"Fair enough." He kept forgetting that she didn't have a lot of evolutions she had to go through to survive like he had.

"So what else do you plan to do?" she asked, moving to look outside.

"I think I can use the nanobots…" he didn't get to finish as she threw herself away from the window and the sun went out.
