"Do you know him?" Han Meixiu carefully asked Li Xiaozhi again. If her only friend didn't know who Chen Dewei is, then it would be harder for her to find out the reason why the man told her he's her husband.
Though she thought of asking LIu Zijian, she realized it's somewhat inappropriate.
When Han Meixiu was about to say 'never mind'Li Xiaozhi exclaimed clapping her hands together as if giving herself a proud congratulatory remark.
"Ah! I remember now. He's your former fiancee!"
"My former fiancee? Why didn't we marry?" Han Meixiu asked.
"You didn't want to marry."
"Then why am I married to Zijian?"
"It's complicated." Li Xiaozhi's head started to ache. The mere thought of explaining everything to Han Meixiu gave her an imaginary headache.
"Correct me if I'm wrong, I didn't like Chen Dewei but I really like my husband. So I...I... uhm... you see, did those things and eventually marry him?"
"Those things?"
"Yeah.. drugged him and...took advantage of him.." Han Meixiu finished her sentence but her face was slightly covered in a faint shade of pink.
"Well, you're correct but also wrong. But good to know that you're aware of your outrageous actions in the past. You remembered or someone told you?"
Han Meixiu didn't answer but instead pouted. Could she say Liu Zijian told her? She slightly shook her head as she remembered that dream.
Her attention went back to present when she heard Li Xiaozhi.
"But I'm wondering, why did you ask about Chen Dewei all of a sudden?" Li Xiaozhi voiced out her curiosity. That person wasn't really significant in Han Meixiu's life why was she specifically mentioned him now?
Han Meixiu explained that the moment she woke up, she was in his mansion and he even claimed he was her husband.
"I just want to know if there's a basis why he said he's my husband. If he was my lover in the past or he was really my husband and we just divorced or something like that." Han Meixiu explained.
"As far as I remember about what you've told me, there were only two times you met him. First, when he was introduced to you as your fiancee and the last was when you were 'caught' with Liu Zijian. Other than those two incidents, there's none. Unless of course you didn't tell me that you dated him. But knowing you, there's simply no way you could have contain that information within yourself. One way or another, you would have told me about it."
There was few minutes of silence followed Li Xiaozhi's words.
"If those were only the case, then his reasons for keeping me in his mansion and making me believe I'm his wife are kind of...weird."
"Indeed. It's either he fell in love at first sight or he's been eyeing you from god knows how long."
"If you put it that way, the last one sounded a bit creepy. He didn't do anything bad to me though." Han Meixiu answered. Although the circumstances sounded a bit alarming, she wanted to give Chen Dewei the benefit of the doubt.
"But that doesn't change the fact that he kept you there and lied to you. What does he really want?"
"No idea. I don't plan on asking him, too. What about the wrong part of my statement earlier? Is it about Liu Zijian?"
"You didn't like him, too. To be precise, you only met him the time you 'drugged' him then ravished him."
"That's outrageous!"
"You're not a saint, okay?"
"Not that, I mean.."
"Oh, ho-ho-ho so you really admit you have an enormous impure thoughts! Does your husband know the way you savaged him on your mind?"
"Stop it! Xiao Xiao! What I mean is how can I drug someone I just met? It's simply outrageous!"
Both women looked at each other. They were surprised and in chorus they said.
"You called me..."
"I called you..."
"Xiao Xiao!"
The two laughed briefly before Han Meixiu turned serious again.
Looking at her best friend, Li Xiaozhi decided to explain the details to her.
"You had an accomplice."
"Oh..." An "o" was formed when Han Meixiu heard her. She then looked at Li Xiaozhi with a thankful gaze.
"Excuse me. It wasn't me. Li Xiaozhi immediately answered raising her eyebrows.
"But, you're my only friend. If not you..."
"Let us put it this way, even if I help you, we couldn't possibly be successful. In that time we both don't know the existence of Liu Zijian. How could we ever plan that?"
"Then how?"
"It was Madam Liu."
"Mommy Yi?"
"Other than her, there's probably no one who could make that plan successful. Besides it was her who suggested that." Li Xiaozhi continued.
Han Meixiu smiled. So she wasn't as shameless as she thought she was. Her relief was obviously shown on her face as she looked glimmering under the sun.
"We walked far enough. Even though I originally want to explore this camp, I think that brother of mine will dismember me if create trouble here."
"Major Li is your brother?"
"En. I'm actually surprise you didn't give me a comment about his looks. Maybe because you're already married that other men don't enter your eyes anymore."
Han Meixiu looked at Li Xiaozhi questioningly.
"Never mind. We should hurry."
"How long will you be staying here?" Han Meixiu asked Li Xiaozhi. Since the latter most likely wanted to drop the topic she could only change it.
"About a week I think. Until my suspension ends."
"Suspension? Why are you suspended?"
"I'll tell you later at night. We're gonna share a room according to my brother. We have plenty of time."
The thought that Li Xiaozhi would be with her for the next few days gave Han Meixiu a sense of comfort.
Matching the pace of Li Xiaozhi, the two arrived in the hut and saw both men patiently waiting for their return.
*
The presence of Li Xiaozhi indeed help Han Meixiu. She was able to remember some of her memories again. Although it was again a sad memory when her grandparents died, she was able to handle them better than yesterday.
Han Meixiu actually wondered why only those sad memories she kept on recalling.
When she asked Mr. Di, he said that negative events stimulate activity in emotion-processing region of the brain. The more this part is activated, the more a person could remember the event. In short, events linked with extreme emotions, would be remembered easily. But then again, there are some cases that the event might be distorted to protect the person's sanity.
In Han Meixiu's case, it was simply a painful memory. In addition with Li Xiaozhi's words, she was able to recall in detail of the funeral of her grandparents.
After lunch they tried another set of session again. Since the outcome of morning session was considered good, Han Meixiu wanted to push her 'luck' further.
Han Meixiu was bought again in a very comforting world. She let herself be drifted into the vast sea of her consciousness. Mr. Di's soft calm voice was her guide to navigate the world of her thoughts. She could see different images. Some were blurry and some were clear.
