When the day of the graduation arrived, everyone was high spirited and excited, me included. The sun was shining bright, the temperature was adequate and everything seemed perfect. Everything went smoothly as well. The songs and performances were gracefully done, the speech from the principal was actually somewhat funny and the food was tasteful. But I learned pretty soon to never let my guard down when it was perfect. Because perfect might just be the calm before the storm.
It was towards the end of event, when I bid farewell with every classmate on the school yard, that I got a strange feeling. I got goosebumps all over my body and was starting to sweat. I couldn't help but feeling watched and it crept me out. The problem was that I never even saw a trace of whoever was responsible. Was it all a figment of my imagination?
"... Mel? Are you with us?" Sasha lightly shaked my shoulder, which snapped me back to attention.
"Yes, of course." I blinked and tried to remember exactly what had been spoken.
"Yeah, right, and my name is Miley Cyrus." She rolled her eyes and looked a bit annoyed.
If it was in the past, I would probably have commented. Now, I kept my thoughts to myself. Afterall, speech is silver and silence is golden.
"No worries, Mel." Ms Party Queen, Eveline, interposed. She had always been a nightbird and a stunning one. According to rumors, she always ended up as a winner in Beer Pong and other similar games. She must have lost many braincells due to her darling, alcohol. Though, she was still a decent person unlike other alcoholics that I knew of.
"Today, a graduation party will be arranged at my place. Everyone is welcome. The more, the merrier." She winked.
"Sounds fun, but I think I will p-" I began to say.
Abruptly, Sasha threw her arm over my shoulders and patted my delta muscle.
"-ass..." I mumled and tried to shake off her weight from me.
"Thanks for the invite, Eve! We will gladly be there." Sasha promised Ms Party Queen. I glared at Sasha. She knew how much I despised large crowds filled with drunkards and lowd music.
"I don't think so, Saz."
"Come on, Mel. This will be the last time. After today, who knows where we will end up in. Africa? Spain? Japan? You have to grab this opportunity and try to experience something new. Otherwise, you will feel deep remorse when you are 60+ and have never truly lived."
She must have seen on my face how unconvinced I was. Her face morphed to one of a puppy and stared at me with teary puppy eyes. "Pretty please? For me. Just this once."
Damn her puppy face!
"Fine. But if you ditch me like last time, you are dead."
"I swear to everything that is holy that it won't happen again."
I snorted. I could bet 100 bucks that she would forget me as soon as she saw some handsome guy at the party.
"Great! You are all welcome at 7 pm. See you there!" Eveline said before leaving with her friends.
"Maybe even Jason will be there." Sasha whispered in my ear and grinned.
"Like I care." I muttered and elbowed her in the chest, which caused her to drop her arm. The grin on her face was so irritating that I wanted to erase it. However I wasn't in the mood, since the feeling of being under a microscope still persisted.
"Let's go and fix ourselves for the party."
