Chapter 2: The stranger

"Mel!"

I turned towards the source of the sound. A blonde, short girl ran towards me.

"Ssshh" I whispered while putting my index finger on my lips. "Keep quiet, Sasha."

She slowed down and crouched down to my level and looked at me with her questioning blue eyes.

"What's the matter?" She whispered.

"I'm spying."

"Spying? On whom? Your boyfriend?"

My palm flew towards her right arm.

"Ouch! That hurts."

"Jason isn't my boyfriend. Anyway, just keep your mouth shut." I annoyingly said while returning my attention to the slightly opened door. It was so frustrating that no sound had escaped from within.

"Hey, I never said any names..." Sasha teased. "... which indicates that Jason really must be someone in your heart."

"He..."

The door flew open and I immediately pulled Sasha and myself further down on the ground, hiding behind the rosebushes. Hopefully, we won't be noticed.

"... travel safe. " A familiar raspy and somewhat shaky voice reached my ears. The door was then shut.

Footsteps.

Lub-dub, lub-dub.

Approaching footsteps.

Lub-dub, lub-dub. Lub-dub, lub-dub.

Silence.

Lub-dub, lub-dub, lub-dub, lub-dub.

Just as I started to believe that we were caught eavesdropping, the owner of the footsteps walked away. My heart finally slowed down and regained its normal activity. Sasha raised her head above the bushes and so did I.

"Phew, that was close." Sasha exclaimed.

"Yeah." I said while scanning the area. All I could see were the bloodred roses among the dark green leaves and the tall marble pillars, building up a construction taken from the ancient Greek culture. There was no sign of that man, what a relief!

Suddenly, someone grabbed my arm and I jumped. Quickly, I turned my head towards that someone and heard a giggle. I frowned.

"Damn, you should have seen the look on your face, Mel."

"Saz..." I glared at her.

She rose smiling and brushed her jeans.

"Tell me now who you were spying on and why."

"I don't know."

"You don't know?" Her eyebrows rose.

"Nope. But whoever can force Mr. Stoneface to crack up into a smile and make him shake like it's minus 30 Celsius degrees, must be a pretty impressive man, don't you think?"

"There is such a wonderful person in this world?" She slammed her hands together, forming knuckles. "Thank you, God, for this wonderful blessing." Her eyes sparkled.

"Stop bullshitting." I rolled my eyes and showed a tiny smile, but then pulled down the corners of my lips. "I only caught a glimpse before he stepped inside Mr Stoneface's office, but I can assure you that the man seems dangerous." I shuddered slightly while thinking back.

"Describe our savior, Mel." Sasha pleaded, completely ignoring my remark.

I sighed. "He is a tall man with short, dark brown hair. I only saw his back, so I can't really describe his face. He was dressed in a black suit and wore a black cloak over it, weird right? I mean, come on, who wears a cloak nowadays? What's more, the aura he emitted... well, it was really cold and intimidating, as if he had gone through hell and come back to life. "

"Oh yeah?"

"Yeah."

"You know what, whacko?" She said, somewhat... angry? "We just lost a great opportunity."

"We did?" I scanned her facial expression and... yep, she was definitely angry.

"Yes, we did." She pointed her right index finger towards me. "Because now, we just missed the chance to befriend our Messias and we have no assurance that he hasn't already left for the Paradise."

"Ehm, Messias? He probably is everything but the savior of the earth." I stated.

I was caught off guard as Sasha grabbed my blouse with her hands and pulled me down towards her. Our faces were only inches apart. She glared at me with her furious eyes.

"You know Saz, I love you and all, but I don't swing that way." I teased, trying to lighten up the mood.

"And Melinda, I love you and all, but I don't really appreciate it when the ticket to our freedom from this endless torture slips right through our fingers." She growled back. Apparently, she didn't like my joke.

"I understand your feelings, Saz. You want to exploit Mr. Coldness to suppress our sadistic mathematics teacher, but I really doubt that befriending Mr Coldness is a wise choice. He could be a serial killer for all we know and presenting ourselves on a golden plate would thus not be smart. " I patted her hands lightly, in an attempt to make her release me from her iron grip.

"And how likely is it that a serial killer just walked through our schoolyard?" She said, not letting go. Damn, if this continued I would have to buy a new blouse.

"Not very likely, I guess." I admitted sourly.

"Exactly."

I had to think quickly. An angry Sasha was never someone to mess with, unless one was skilled in handling an evil demoness from the deepest abyss of hell and certainly I was not.

"I am really, really sorry, Sasha, for being an idiot who couldn't see the benefits of exposing herself to a cold stranger with a weird fashion sense. The foolish me hope to amend myself and make it up to you. How about two large cups of Mrs Red's homemade ice cream?" I pleaded as I attempted a puppy face.

She frowned. "Two cups?"

"No, no, I meant three large cups of the most delicious ice cream on this planet. " I hastily corrected myself, since she didn't seem satisfied.

Sasha stared at me and the struggle was visible in her eyes. Eventually, the desire for the promised dessert outrivaled her desire to see me running around in the mall, looking for some new clothes.

"Fine, but don't think that I will forgive you that easily." She finally released me.

"Whatever you say, baby." I said with a smirk, knowing that she would do anything for food, maybe even selling me to human trafficking. I internally grimaced at that thought.

I flung my arm over her shoulder. "Let's go then, Sasha. Our lunch break is almost over and I still haven't filled my stomach yet. When the afternoon classes finish, I will invite you to a big sugar feast."
