Seeing the results of Hei's consolation, both Honghuo and Yuying were left speechless.
Well, speechless wasn't the right word. They had a lot to say but didn't know what to say first.
Honghuo decided to just give Heihuo a pat on the shoulder.
"Nicely done."
Yuying couldn't do the same, but she also expressed her approval.
"I didn't know you had it in you."
"Thanks, but it is my mother who deserves the praise."
Wrapped up in the atmosphere, Hei was actually feeling quite proud of himself, but he was also aware that this was a mere fraction of what his mother would have been able to achieve.
After hearing her words at the time, he had immediately started sifting through the pieces of the dishwasher thinking about what would need to be replaced and what he could fix himself.
Little did he know, the young lady was doing exactly that. As she stood up from the floor, she was thinking about how she would improve the Zhu Clan and make it into the clan she had always believed it was.
If she didn't become the matriarch after the patriarch handed his position down, she would be second in command. That was what she resolved to do after hearing Hei's words.
As for actually becoming the matriarch, there was the patriarch's son as an obstacle. He was, without a doubt, the number one junior of the Zhu Clan. Realistically speaking, it would be extremely difficult for her to become the matriarch if he had any intention of being the patriarch.
Thinking of this, she looked around and noticed that the patriarch was missing. She also noticed the scene of the earlier battle, where the ground was still scorching hot, and the three elders who had retreated into the audience. There were also two fellows with black markings all over their bodies.
"Where…?"
Hei noticed what she was doing and as he took the two kidnappers back into his storage space, he answered.
"Your patriarch has already left this world."
"!"
Hearing this, her eyes opened wide and her hands found themselves over her mouth.
The patriarch was dead? How could this be?
While the patriarch had viciously attacked her earlier, it was somewhat understandable. In the face of their enemy, she was indeed quite useless. And when one added the various meritorious deeds the patriarch had accomplished in his life, it was difficult to wish him harm.
To hear that he had passed away, no member of the Zhu Clan would be left with dry eyes.
That was what she knew, and yet, when she looked around, there wasn't a tear to be found. Everyone she saw had a complicated expression on their faces. Nothing like mourning the loss of a loved one.
She looked to the other members of her clan.
"Is this true?"
It wasn't that she doubted the masked one's words. It was just that this was all too sudden. Just moments ago, the patriarch was alive and well, and now, all of a sudden he was gone? And even if that were the case, where was his body?
The members of her clan nodded their heads in response.
Still slightly dazed, she turned back to the masked one.
"Were you the one who did this?"
She didn't want it to be the case, but she had to confirm this. It was well known that the masked one didn't leave a trace of his victims.
Hei thought for a moment, creating an awkward silence. The young lady felt a growing pressure as she looked into the abyss-like eyes of his mask.
Yuying waited for him to deny it, but his words were strange as usual.
"It could be said to be the case."
The young lady took a step back.
Honghuo scratched his head and Yuying had a few words to say.
[Why would you say that? That guy killed himself.]
[But it wouldn't be false to say that I drove him to such a point. Had I not come today, he would most likely still be alive.]
[But he was a demonic cultivator. He deserved to die anyway, right?]
[Whether he deserved to die, it is not my place to say.]
[Hmm.]
Yuying found this to be interesting. Most people, when met with a demonic cultivator, would hold nothing but animosity towards them. This business partner of hers was quite odd in this regard.
It was no wonder he had to take suppressive substances. If he was this attached to an incident like this even under the effects, it was hard to imagine how he would handle it while in his normal state.
It was almost enough to make one want to comfort him. Though, she wasn't sure how a donkey would do that.
[Are you feeling guilty about this?]
[No. Not in the slightest.]
[Eh?]
What was with the sudden switch in his attitude? Wouldn't the normal answer have been yes, given what he said before? There was this unusual disjoint in his view on things and his feelings about them.
Just like he could so casually call people donkeys while somehow not meaning for it to be an insult.
Didn't they call this being socially inept?
Yuying was going to ask more, but the young lady moved first.
Her initial fear had been replaced by frustration and anger.
She stepped up to Hei and grabbed his clothing with both fists at about chest height.
"Why would you do that?"
Yuying couldn't help commenting.
[It's kind of awkward with you being so much shorter than she is. It looks like she's bullying a child.]
Hei ignored her words and addressed the young lady.
Instead of telling her something like 'your patriarch was a demonic cultivator', which would probably help the situation, he decided to speak plainly without deflecting any of the blame from himself.
"Your patriarch had something I needed, and in the process of obtaining it, he perished."
'To be honest, though, it was mostly Honghuo who led him to that point. I had already gotten what I wanted when he tried to escape this place.'
Speaking of Honghuo, after hearing Hei's words, he walked over to where the patriarch's remains were and picked up a few of his belongings.
There was no point in wasting good loot.
Ignoring his actions, the young lady's focus was fully on the masked one.
"So, you were also…"
She released him and took a step back.
As she burned his image into her mind, she pulled out her sword from her spatial ring. Today would be the day she died, but she wasn't scared. No, she was terrified, but this was what she had to do.
She remembered the brief contact she had had with this fellow, starting in her bathroom, where he appeared unannounced, then again as he burst through the walls and grabbed her. He then protected her from the patriarch's assault and showed her the ugly side of the Zhu Clan that she had never seen before.
While she was in anguish, he showed her a way to overcome and create a better Zhu Clan.
But even after all of that, he had slain the patriarch and multiple elders, leaving the Zhu Clan severely crippled. How could she stand by and watch all of this? She had to take action, even if it would cost her her life.
Such was justice. Such was the spirit of the Zhu Clan!
She placed her fingertips on the edge of the blade, starting from its hilt and prepared to use her strongest technique. She would offer her blood essence to the blade to unleash her full might, but the price she would have to pay…
She was fully prepared.
That was until she felt a force at the back of her head.
"Stop now, Xiaoli!"
Knocked out of her serious state, Xiaoli turned to the person standing behind her. It was one of the elders who had gone off to ambush that other boy.
"Elder Hong. But…"
She moved her gaze between Elder Hong and the masked one.
Honghuo was just watching as he placed items into his spatial ring.
Elder Hong could understand where she was coming from, but she was missing some crucial information. If he didn't know any better, he would say that the masked one was baiting her into attacking him. For what reason, who knew?
Truthfully speaking, the further away he was from these people, the better. But he wasn't about to let one of the younger generation throw her life away like this. The Zhu Clan was already damaged enough as it was.
"Xiaoli. The patriarch… He was a demonic cultivator."
"What?!"
Elder Hong then went on to explain all the details and hearing them, Xiaoli's knees grew weak so she took a rest on the ground. Elder Hong, on the other hand, left the place as soon as he could.
Xiaoli looked to the masked one with resentment in her eyes.
"Sheesh. You could have told me the whole story, you know? Do you know how scared I was just now?"
"… Does it change anything?"
Hei was thrown for a loop by her sudden change in demeanor.
"Does it change anything? Only everything! If the patriarch was a demonic cultivator, you should have just said so. Do you think I would have done all that just now if you had?"
After saying this, she remembered what just happened.
"I showed you an ugly side of myself, didn't I?"
"I wouldn't say ugly."
Xiaoli smiled in response, but Yuying interjected.
[But you would say donkey, huh?]
[Let it go.]
[Let it go? I can't hold-]
[Let's not.]
[Let's not what?]
[Never mind.]
[Anyway, as I was saying, I can't hold it in. You should know this by now.]
[Let the past be the past. I have already admitted to my mistakes. You're a regular sized donkey, not a fat one. It was my fault that time. Hmm. How about this. As long as it's within reason, I'll make it up to you.]
The corner of Yuying's mouth twitched, but she detected an opportunity.
[You'll make it up to me?]
[As long as it's within reason, yes. But I hope you can move on from this matter.]
[Within reason is fairly ambiguous, you know? What are we talking exactly?]
[If I can accomplish it without losing my integrity, it shall be done. Is that sufficient?]
Yuying smiled, though Hei couldn't see it.
[Indeed it is.]
[Then what will it be?]
[I think I'll leave it for later. Won't 'within reason' expand with time?]
[A practical approach, but have you considered that it may become too late at some point?]
[What do you mean? We'll be partners forever, won't we? Are you going to run off with someone else?]
[Ah. You really cause people concern. Anyway, I think I'll hold it off for the time being.]
[Suit yourself.]
Little did Hei know, this 'donkey compensation' would reach unimaginable levels.
Oblivious to the trouble he had brought to himself, Hei directed his attention back to Xiaoli. He was interested in this situation.
"Simply because your patriarch was a demonic cultivator, you are able to overlook his death?"
Xiaoli sighed.
"It's complicated, but at the end of the day, it wasn't your fault that the patriarch died. He brought it upon himself in a way."
"But if we hadn't-"
"If you hadn't come, the Zhu Clan wouldn't have suffered this. Is that what you're saying?"
"Well, if you had waited for me to finish-"
"Then let me ask you. Is it better to remain blissfully unaware of a problem eating at you from the inside, eventually destroying you? Or is it better to discover it and resolve it, even though it causes you immediate harm?"
"Both sides have their-"
"Exactly! It's better to discover it and get rid of it. That's what demonic cultivators are, you know? Especially for the Zhu Clan. They can't be allowed to exist here."
"Cantaloupe."
"Mm. That's what I was thinking. We need to swiftly remove them. It's like you said. We have to find the rusty parts, the old and broken and replace them with the new. Then we can rise up and be even greater. Right?"
"…"
Hei realised that Xiaoli wasn't listening to a word he said. She was lost in her own world.
"The only thing is, how do we find them? They're slippery fellows, as can be seen with the patriarch."
At this point, Xiaoli had recovered from her bout of weakness and stood back up.
"You knew about him, didn't you? That's why you confronted him?"
"Well, not exact-"
"Then will you help us?"
"…"
[Does this girl listen to anything?]
[Coming from you, I get pot and kettle vibes.]
[What's that supposed to mean?]
[Never mind.]
Faced with Xiaoli's expectant gaze, Hei wasn't moved in the slightest.
His silence caused her to start thinking about these last few interactions. Had he been trying to say something?
[So, are you going to help her?]
[I suppose.]
[Oh. So you do believe that demonic cultivators should be disposed of?]
[Not exactly.]
[… Then why? Could it be that you have a thing for her?]
Though Yuying didn't know this business partner of hers that well, there was no way he would reject her and go after this Xiaoli… Right?
Xiaoli was some junior of some random clan in the lower continent, and Yuying had already told her business partner that she was from the middle continent. In terms of looks, she didn't lose to Xiaoli either, so the choice should have been obvious.
But her business partner did say some strange things from time to time. Who knew? Maybe he had seen something in this girl.
Now that she thought about it, he didn't hesitate when telling Xiaoli that she was beautiful. One of the most beautiful he had seen, for that matter… And yet, Yuying herself got regular sized donkey… A very pretty, regular sized donkey…
Hmm…
Unaware of the road Miss business partner was walking down in her mind, Hei answered.
[No, that's not it.]
[…]
[…]
[Go on.]
[What do you mean? Have I not answered your question?]
[You answered the second one, but not the first.]
[But since you asked the second one, didn't you intend to focus on that point specifically? By answering the second question, have I not given you the answer you were looking for?]
[No… I wanted the answer to the first one. I didn't think you would interpret it that way… That's not normal, you know?]
Wouldn't most people have answered the second, then answered the first? That was what Yuying was thinking as she gave her partner an odd look.
Though, he couldn't see it.
[Is that so…]
Hei took a mental note. Apparently, some people asked extra clarifying questions for no reason. How impractical.
[Well, to answer your question, I'm not exactly helping her. I just so happened to be looking for people who had a high chance of being demonic cultivators within the Zhu Clan in the first place. You have already seen the women in the spatial fold.]
[Right. But what do those things have to do with each other?]
[The ones who kidnapped them are likely to be demonic cultivators. I was already looking for the kidnappers.]
[Oh? Are you going to get justice for the women?]
[No.]
[… Then… why are you looking for those kidnappers?]
[I will let the victims address their own grievances. Whatever they choose to do with their kidnappers, I will facilitate it. Though, I do hope that they can find it in their hearts to forgive.]
[Not going to happen. The kidnappers… are already dead!]
[Nani?!]
[Even I want to kill a few.]
[… I see. Well, that's a shame.]
[That's a strange way to look at it.]
[Perhaps.]
Hei started looking around, and Xiaoli did the same.
"Well? W-will you help us? Please?"
Hei turned back to Xiaoli.
"You are asking for my assistance in exposing demonic cultivators within the Zhu Clan?"
"Mm."
Hei then looked around to the other members of the Zhu Clan.
"Is this a shared sentiment?"
A few of the children, who had snuck out to watch, hid behind their elders. That metal mask was too scary for their liking.
The others remained silent, which caused Xiaoli to reprimand them.
"This is our chance to change things for ourselves! Our clan has been poisoned with demonic cultivation techniques. Don't refuse the antidote!"
While she was part of the younger generation, she was still a transcendent realm cultivator and one of the strongest in the clan, so her words held some weight.
And then when one added the fact that the greatest enemy the Zhu Clan had ever faced was standing right next to her, conversing leisurely, there was some extra persuasive power.
As a result, there was a general agreement among the audience, however, some were still concerned. They decided to wait and see how things would turn out. Only speaking if their worries came to pass.
Seeing their agreement, Xiaoli turned back to the masked one.
"Please."
"Very well."
-Fwoosh.
Immediately after Hei's words, his form seemed to transform into one of black flames. Those flames grew in individual masses all over his body before launching themselves into the surrounding Zhu Clan members.
If they hadn't heard what these black flames did by now, they would have had to have been in seclusion at the wrong time.
But before they could even panic, the flames had arrived and consumed people without mercy.
One small boy saw the very person he was hiding behind get consumed by flames, swiftly disappearing.
He fell to his backside in terror and was surprised that he was able to keep his soul within his body. But as he patted his chest to make sure his heart was still beating, he saw a wave of black flames coming straight towards him.
Ah. He should have listened to his mother!
That was what he thought as he was engulfed by the flames.
No. When he opened his eyes, he saw that the flames had split right in front of him, going to his left and his right.
"Ah!"
Behind him, he could hear the voice of another older fellow as he was consumed by the flames.
Ah. He was right not to listen to his mother! This was the craziest thing he had experienced in his life.
He watched as the flames danced through the people, seemingly knowing who they were going after, and as they receded, there were a few notable gaps which lacked people.
The flames returned to the masked one and danced around his body as if they were seeking praise, before merging with him.
The young boy's eyes shone as he watched this. When would he be able to do such things?
He wasn't the only one. Yuying had the exact same expression.
[More of this! This is what we need!]
Of course, not everyone shared these kinds of feelings.
"Xiaoli! Is this what you wanted? This is going to make our clan better?"
"Your cousin, my son was among them, Xiaoli!"
Xiaoli also wasn't expecting the masked one to act in such a way.
"Uncle Kong, I-"
"How can we even be sure they were demonic cultivators? Where is the proof?"
"This was too rash, Xiaoli!"
Funnily enough, no one was pointing their anger at Hei. Xiaoli was the much safer target for them to voice their grievances.
At the moment, Xiaoli was at a loss for words. Everyone standing here was her family, and any demonic cultivators they found were bound to be mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters.
Many people would be devastated upon discovering that their own loved one was a demonic cultivator.
There was also the fact that what the elders said was true. They didn't know that those people were demonic cultivators for sure. It was all based on the masked one's judgment, which, even if it was correct, it wouldn't let anyone have closure.
With them being eliminated so fast, there was no way they could verify the truth.
That being said, Xiaoli remembered that she had also been swallowed by those black flames, but on the other side was not death. It was the largest spatial fold she had ever heard of.
She turned to the masked one, hoping that he hadn't taken it upon himself to eliminate those he believed to be demonic cultivators.
"Is it the same as earlier?"
Hei turned his gaze to her and saw traces of the apprehension she was feeling.
It seemed the people of the Zhu Clan believed he had murdered all of those individuals…
At first, he thought the idea was silly, but after some thought, he could sort of see how they would come to such a conclusion.
[They think I killed those people… Is it the mask?]
[You didn't?]
[No.]
[… Well, I can tell you that it isn't the mask… It's probably the fact that you came in and made people disappear using fire… And then there's your companion, who plainly killed people. Wouldn't it be strange for people not to assume that you also killed them?]
[Ah. I see. These people have not been taught to see the positive side of things.]
[… Sure.]
[You're the same?]
[There is no positive side of this… Where is it?]
[If you look at the situation properly, what reason would I have to kill people so thoroughly that not even ashes remain? Besides that, all of their items also disappeared. I would plainly gain nothing. Who would do that? That being the case, I have obviously captured them alive.]
[That's not… When you have a proper motivation, you don't exactly think about gaining material wealth during the slaughter. That's not even mentioning some of those eccentrics out there. They'll slaughter eight generations because you exhaled too loudly.]
[I see. How impractical.]
[… You should probably tell that to Xiaoli. Your silence seems to be scaring her… and everybody else.]
Hei noticed that Xiaoli's apprehension grew with time.
He didn't know that she felt this strange stifling pressure when he remained silent. There really was something about that mask.
Instead of speaking, he decided to open up his storage space.
On the ground appeared a sea of flames and after those flames died down, a number of bodies could be seen, lying down, their arms and legs restrained by shackles of black flames.
"These are the Zhu Clan members who I believe have an increased chance of being demonic cultivators. This most likely isn't all of them, as some aren't in the residence at this time, and others may be hiding themselves."
Hei himself could not say with certainty whether any one of these people were demonic cultivators or not. His abilities relied on him knowing what he was looking for when searching for 'treasures'. Since he didn't quite know how to define what a demonic cultivator was, he was unable to detect them.
Though, he did have some ideas from the brief contact he had with the patriarch. Still, the patriarch alone wasn't enough to create criteria which would encompass all demonic cultivators.
That being said, he could always just ask them and determine the truth using his lie detector ability, but that wouldn't be sufficient proof to the Zhu Clan.
Among those people lying on the ground, the audience could see a few familiar faces. They were those who had just disappeared.
"Long'er!"
The one Xiaoli had referred to as Uncle Kong wanted to run forward and retrieve his son, but he remembered that the masked one was standing there, so he restrained himself.
There were many similar people in the audience.
Hei turned his gaze to Xiaoli.
"I have only found that these people have a higher chance of being demonic cultivators. Whether they are or not, I cannot say. Your Zhu Clan can use your own methods to determine the truth of the matter."
He then turned around and walked towards Honghuo.
"Did you find anything of value?"
"Just a few talismans. For a minute realm cultivator, this fellow didn't have much."
"Ah. I destroyed a few of the talismans he had."
Honghuo placed his hand over his face.
"Ah. You can't keep doing this, Heihuo. Even if you don't value them, there are people like me, to whom these things could mean the difference between life and death."
"Git gud."
"Hm?"
"One shouldn't rely on external protections. Or something like that. How can you surpass your limits if you know you can rely on a few talismans to save your life?"
Perhaps Hei's words would have had some effect, if only he had said them with some enthusiasm. But as he delivered them, they could only be interpreted as uninterested deflecting.
It didn't help that he was waving his hand in a shooing manner.
"… If you don't care, just say so."
Yuying stepped in.
"He has a point."
"Ahem. Anyway, there must be more than a few talismans. Are there any books? Information jades? Things like that."
Honghuo scratched his head as he produced a spatial ring from his own.
"Maybe there are things like that in here, but the defences he put on it are too tough. I was going to take a look after breaking through to the minute realm. Why don't you give it a go?"
Honghuo tossed the spatial ring over to Hei, who examined it for a moment.
He didn't detect any defences, but since Honghuo had been unable to access the ring, the patriarch must have put some hard-to-detect protection measures on it.
As such, Hei used his full might when trying to break through those defences. The only thing was…
-Crack.
-Poof.
The spatial ring was reduced to dust.
"Eh?" Hei.
"Eh?" Honghuo.
"Eh?" Yuying.
"Eh?" The Zhu Clan.
