Chapter 4: Chapter 4 "Red Smokeman"

We made it to the Gates of the LaGrange Estate 20 mins later. Miss Lawrence stretched her arm from the passenger seat of Lydia's car and pressed the intercom.

"James its Sophia, I'm here with some officers who can help Nathan. Open the gates".

Soon a loud buzz could be heard and the gigantic black metal gates opened for us to drive into the estate. It was almost a 2 min drive up to the house and Lydia wasn't going easy on the speeding either this place was huge. We got out and made our way up to the front door with Ms. Lawrence in the lead.

Once the doors opened we were greeted by a tall mildly attractive man, whose attire contributed to one assuming that this was the butler.

"Good afternoon Ladies", He greeted.

"Hello, I'm officer McMann and this is Ms. Cranpeck", Lydia introduced as she extended a hand for him to shake.

He smiled at me sadly and for some odd reason I felt that sadness was meant for me. Like he knew something I didn't.

"Since we have all been introduced let's get down to the matter at hand. Where's the boy", Lydia enquired.

"Ah, He's playing in his bedroom. Should I bring him here or-".

"No need for that this will go a lot smoother if he's comfortable", I interrupted.

"I see very well then this way", he replied.

He took us through a wide hall way which lead to grand golden brown and burgundy themed living room. Lydia whistled as she admired the fancy furniture and works of art displayed there. Above the fire place was a picture that managed to grab my attention, a woman with blonde hair and cerulean eyes was holding a Laughing small boy while in turn being embraced by ruggedly handsome man with ebony black hair and dark brown eyes.

I assumed the laughing boy to be Nathan and the woman his deceased mother. The man could be his father as the boy had physical attributes of both individuals.

"That's little Nate with his parents", Ms. Lawrence confirmed.

"I figured", I responded. "So where is he shouldn't he be here with his son in such a time", I enquired as we proceed up a staircase.

"We haven't seen or heard from Mr. LaGrange in a month", James stated.

"Did his wife file a missing person's report?" Lydia asked

"No, In fact she didn't seem the slightest bit affected by his disappearance".

"That's strange", I said out loud to myself.

"Quite, Mr. & Mrs. LaGrange have always been so loving towards each other. So it really shocked everyone when she behaved like everything was fine after his disappearance".

I exchange a confused look with Lydia. That's very puzzling, why wouldn't she be worried about her missing husband unless she knew something the staff didn't. There may be more to this case than meets the eye. We soon arrived at a door decorated gold and blue stars. James knocked the door twice.

"Nathan we have a few visitors her to see you".

"Come in", I heard small voice reply.

James opened the door wide for us to enter first. Nathan was siting inside a fort of some sort made of pillows, teddy bears and Legos. A smile crept up my face at the sight of this adorable 5 year old poking his head out to observe his visitors like a little rabbit emerging from a hole. Nathan was a chubby little boy with a head of black Silky hair, beautiful dark brown eyes and light caramel toned skin. My heart pained me to think that those innocent eyes had to witness the death of his mother.

"Nathan this is officer McMann and her associate Ms. Cranpeck", Ms. Lawrence introduced as she took him by the hand and walked him over to us.

"A pleasure to meet you Nathan", Lydia smiled as she extended her hand.

Nathan looked at her hand but didn't take it and smiled up at her politely.

"Hello Nathan", I said as I offered him a smile "Can I call you Nate?"

He smiled at me and nodded

"Ok Nate, you can call me Jane", I offered my hand and he hesitantly shook it before quickly retracting his little arm to hide behind his Nanny.

"Nathan these ladies would like to find out what exactly happened to mommy will you help them?"

Terror flashed over his face at the mention of his mother, tears started to roll down his cheeks as he violently shook his head. This was bad the memory obviously had a strong grip on his mental state, if I didn't act fast there would be terrible side effects.

"Lyd I need to take that memory and soon or it may affect other factors of his health", I whispered

"Hmmm", Lydia agreed.

"Nate", I said drawing his attention to me and away from the floor. "Do you want those bad memories to go away?"

His tear stained eyes settled on me with hope and desperation that I never imagine that I would ever witness on a child's face.

"You can make the red smoke man go away?
