Chapter 8: Growth

Deep in an unknown coastal forest shining with moonlight, a boy who looked about 8 years old, with scars on his whole body including his face, wearing nothing but a thin white belt, who was covered in dried liquid of various colors was chasing after his prey with a spike covered staff.

The large green scaled buck sprinted through the thicket, jumping over the shrubs and avoiding the trees. There was a long purple gash on its back which was starting to fester. Its steps became wobbly as it ran without stop from the danger behind it.

The boy whose complexion was inexplicable due to the stains kept up with the larger animal despite its fast pace. Very slowly, the wound on the back of the buck started to dissolve its flesh and bones. But, it didn't seem to notice and instead kept running before its steps slowed down until it eventually tripped over a root.

The bloody boy slowed down as well and walked over. He pressed his weight on its neck before bringing out a small tusk which he used to stab the throat of the buck, spraying out blood while the dying buck spasming to a stillness. Its blood was the rarely seen red colored blood. He had not been sprayed with red in more than two months.

He bent down to the throat and started to drink the blood coming out from the hole he had just made. The blood had a somewhat tangy flavor. After he couldn't drink any more, the boy brought out a small bag made of black skin from the piece of belt on his waist. The belt made of soft white and fluffy skin held the tusk he had used earlier and a bone covered with a few purple spikes. He filled the bag with all the blood it could hold before tying it to his belt again.

He let the remaining blood drain out. After the red blood drained a bit, the flowing blood started to get a darker hue before the color became completely purple. When the purple blood touched the grass on the forest floor, the grass started to whither a bit before rejuvenating again. He brought the spiky staff and washed it with the poisoned blood before leaning it against a tree.

He then used the tusk to tear off the skin near the neck to the hind of the animal along its soft belly this area being the only place with no scales covering it. He tore the skin in a very practiced but crude way to reveal the white and red flesh hidden underneath. He then tore through the flesh to reveal a pink colored figure hidden within a soft bag of tissue. The figure had four legs and no fur. There was a brown chord connecting it to its mother.

The boy heartlessly plunged the tusk into the baby tearing through the thin walls of its being. Blood sported along with an unidentified transparent liquid. The boy revealed a gleeful look before slurping the transparent liquid forcefully through some coughs and chokes. He continued to drink even though the liquid seemed to be burning him from the inside while his skin became red-hot.

After licking every last drop, the scars on his body began to visibly heal. The long gashes running down his face and back closed up before healing magically. With his body healed, his skin started to return to its former color. But before it could do so, he held the fetus and bit into its neck. He started to drain a golden liquid from its neck. After a minute, the shriveled body of the fetus was all that greeted him and he wiped his mouth before lying down in the cavity used by the fetus and ate it before falling asleep.

The boy was woke up due to sensing a powerful creature approaching the carcass where he slept. He peeked out and saw a predator of the forest. It was a large ant like creature. It had a thick dull carapace which was purple in color with brown stripes. It had antennae which were sharp at the end looking more like a weapon than a sensory weapon. Mandibles like an iron vice grip. It had a stinger extending from its hind like that of a scorpion. On its back were thin wings which helped it to chase its prey faster.

Seeing the creature, he knew that it had come for is game. He looked at the staff leaning on the tree. It was too far away. He pulled the tusk from his belt and broke off a poison thorn from the hanging bone before holding both weapons in each hand. He waited for the newcomer to come closer.

It stepped closer and closer until it was almost in his striking distance when it paused as if sensing something. Its feelers twitched about searching for anything out of place when the boy jumped at it. He tried to pierce the tusk into the body of the insect but it slid off the exoskeleton causing it no harm. The and tried to bite him at the same to but he rolled away quickly casing it to miss. The ant clicked at him threateningly before charging at him. He parried the charge and jumped on to its back. He gripped the attacking tail with one hand and used the other to grab both of the antennas and pulled hard. The insect shrieked and he yelled. The stinger on the tail extended and tried to futilely pierce him. He continued to pull the insects feelers as it screaked a glass cracking sound. It rolled to the ground trying to get its rider off of its back. The boy held on tightly but was almost stabbed by the poisonous barb. He finally tore the feelers of the ant making it writhe in agony. He then used both hands to pull at the tail. He pulled and pulled as the monster under him blindly charged at a tree shocking his body and almost succeeding in running its tail through his body. But instead the tail as lodged into the tree. The same tree where he had left his poison stick. The tree started to whither and in a few seconds it completely melted. As he saw it, he jumped off the ant towards his stick. The tail stabbed at the air he had just been.

Holding his trusty stick with both hands he charged at the disoriented insect and pounded its head hard. Though it didn't die immediately, its carapace was pierced by the spike. The poison didn't seem to have much of an effect n it. But that didn't matter as its head was impaled. Its tail shot towards him and he had to retreat without retrieving the stick.

The boy jumped to a distance away as he saw the insect swaying and struggling to stand as its cries grew increasingly faint before it fell. Once it died, he closed in to the body and swiftly stabbed his tusk into the base of its tail. Then he tore the head off of the insects head and it started to spray a golden blood which he bathed in. He also drank some of it before thinking of something before taking out the small bag full of red blood. He emptied the bag and refilled it with the new golden blood before continuing to drink from the source.

He broke through the insect's body and tore off its internal organs before finding what he was looking for- a small dark purple stone. He tore it off and brought it outside. The stone was connected to the tail of the monster and was the source of its poisonous power. He also cut off the tail and removed the sharp stinger to put it into his belt.

The boy went back to the carcass of the buck he had hunted before and started to eat it. The meat of the monsters do not rot quickly but instead requires at least a month to become inedible naturally. All his fighting abilities and knowledge, he got from experience. Committing many mistakes and being on the verge of death multiple times had been the price. But this was not without its rewards. He got stronger. Very strong, and honed his battle tactics and intuition in the face of death. He had become a prime predator in this forest. But till this day he couldn't remember anything about himself. He remembered nothing of who he was or where he had come from, not even his name. He didn't even know why he knew what the things he found were.

He had searched the whole forest for anything which resembled himself. Yet he found nothing but numerous predators and prey. He saw a wide barren field outside the forest. He went to look and walked for three days only to find nothing. Hungry and tired he came back to the forest. He decided not to go out ever again to that place which was void of any living creature not to mention prey. He saw animals of various sizes and shapes. Some of which were a more intelligent that he was. They had many abilities like flying, digging, spitting a hot substance which seemed like fire but wasn't any fire he knew of. He tried to find a way to obtain the monster's ability of flames so that he could burn the meat he got but couldn't find any. There were some which could control the land he walked on while some could shoot water. Pure drinkable water was something he had never found in this place except when it rained. And even then the water had to be collected from inside the trees as the rain water stringed and burned his skin. There were even some monsters which looked like trees. They would wait for something to come close before swiftly constricting it with their branches before opening their bark to drag the prey to it.

He discovered that the flesh and blood of the creatures could make him stronger and faster making it easier to hunt prey. There were also rare treats like the baby inside the buck he had found tonight. These would give him miraculous increases in his ability to think and heal along with his scenes. After numerous hunts, he boy had perfected the art of stalking. This made hunting easier.

But the most common type of creatures were the ones who used poison. It was his first and strongest weapon against his foes. The beasts all had some form of immunity to poison. But they were all also susceptible to poison even if a bit. He used this chance of weakening to go in for the fatal strike. After many times getting poisoned and surviving the ordeal with his own will power, he had also already become immune to most of the poisons in the forest except for the most potent ones like the insect monster he had just fought. He found its poison core and would use it to build his immunity against this poison as well.

As he was eating, the boy heard an explosion in the distance. It seemed to come from the edge of the forest. He was alerted and decided to go check the source of the commotion as there wasn't really anything here which could kill him easily.

He picked up his weapon and tools before sprinting to the sounds. He ran faster than the eyes could follow. He had become faster than when he had chased the buck.

As the boy ran towards the fire which had now started, he saw many animals running the other way. When he reached, the scene he saw caused him to want to run as well….Something had made the king angry.

He saw a gigantic enraged reptilian with wings surrounded by creatures which he had never seen before. These beings stood on two legs and yet had the heads and other features of a kind of prey he had usually hunted when he had been weaker. Among this group were a few beings which also looked like…him?
