Chapter 34: Self-Reflection and Final Touches

'When did I become like this, was it in my last life? Or has this world and system been affecting me so much that I don't even recognise myself anymore?' James felt quite disturbed that he hadn't even noticed his mentality changing until it had already happened.

[Host is beginning to show the attitude of a dominator, a dominator will bring their allies with them and leave their enemies in the ground]

'Can you change the effect of the Dominator skill set into a skill, just call it dominators mind or something, I don't like this feeling of not being myself.'

[System level is insufficient]

'How much Exp does it cost to upgrade the system again?'

[50 Exp, would you like to upgrade?]

[Yes / No]

'Go ahead.'

[Upgrading]

After a couple of minutes of waiting James received a confirmation that the system had been upgraded successfully.

[Completed Hosts request, skill Dominators mind added]

[Would you like to know the upgrades to the system?]

'Yes please.'

[System received an increased level of suggestion and has some abilities that have now been upgraded, for example, the system can now collect achievement rewards without the host's input]

'Is that it? It's not exactly easy to get Exp to upgrade.'

[There are other things available, but the host hasn't reached the requirements for unlocking them yet]

'Well, at least I have something to look forward to now I guess.'

After the system upgrade James just spent the rest of his day practising with his sword and spear, he also decided to throw in some ranged weapon practice such as archery and crossbows. While he was exercising he started sparring with his guards to get more combat experience, he felt it was a lot better for refining his skills but still lacked that edge of fighting for his life as he knew these men wouldn't kill their client.

....................................................

[Days Remaining: 81]

James woke up at the sign of first light and headed to pick up the new shelves for his shop; he wanted to have everything set up for his opening day tomorrow. Luckily for him, Fletcher had proposed a deal to cover all the staff for the store as long as he didn't have to pay rent for the space of his goods. When the shop became more successful in the future this deal was likely to save him a good amount of money; it seemed Fletcher was sure that the store would succeed.

Once all of the shelves were transported, and the store was ready to be filled with the goods to be sold James headed to the building he had been storing the finished spears in, every order for the nobles should be ready now. It was time for him to fulfil all of his orders, James hired a bunch of carts and sent them off to each nobles house, once he had sent off every order he realised he still had about 50 spears left, so he decided to move them to his store to get sold.

With all of his orders fulfilled it was time for James to move all of his smiths and carpenters to the Artisan Quarter, now he would be able to make some progress with them. He went to find Tobias and told him he had a quota for at least 25 spears a day along with 15 crossbows and that he needed to work with the store and carpenter to cater to the demand for whatever was more popular at the time. As long as he met that quota, he was free to play around with the designs James had given him with the rest of his time.

James checked in with his tailors and found that they had already managed to complete 100 sets of decently made clothes, having the constant supply of fabric from the fabric workers enabled them to maximise their output. Their rate of failure was also incredibly small because the quality of the clothes didn't have to be amazing it just had to be consistent.

Finishing up checking on everything James headed to see Fletcher about the real estate agent they were opening, he also wanted to list the 29 newly furnished buildings he owned for rental.

"You've been busy James; I see everything is beginning to come to fruition, this school is the talk of the town, there isn't a single commoner family who isn't going to send their kid to it. Are you sure you can handle those numbers?"

"Yeah I have it set up with various classrooms that can each hold a large number of students even if they are a bit cramped, we should be able to handle the numbers, and if we can't, we can always expand. In fact, I may have to, I don't want to have to worry about my teachers burning out having to look after too many students. Do we have any suitable buildings in the real estate agent?"

"Speaking of that it's ready to go by the way I've just been advertising it at the moment. Unfortunately, the talks are suppressed at the moment by everyone talking about the school. But yes we have a couple of buildings that fit the same requirements as the last one."

Do you have one that's on the opposite side of the district to the last one, it's not exactly for the commoners to have their kids travel."

"Yes we have one that's in a pretty densely populated area on the other side of the city, it should fit your needs perfectly."

"And about the real estate agent, I'm sure the people who would need to know about it will have heard about it, they're the ones who would be keeping their ears open after all, also I have these 29 houses to put up for rent, they're all newly furnished."

"How much would you like to rent them for? I can probably squeeze out 4 or 5 Leones a month from the right person for each one."

"Just rent them for a cost that is affordable for the common class people, I don't need the money all that much at the moment, well not when it comes to those amounts anyway."

"The more I learn about you, the more confused I get, you want a large volume of money yet you still don't forget about the people below you, I just struggle to understand your motives sometimes."

"The great thing between us is you don't need to understand them, but since you have an interest there's no harm in telling you. I plan on getting to the inner city to attend a school to learn about magic circuits and magic itself, I need to raise my status so I can get accepted to one of the schools, I have a teacher to recommend me but only on the condition I up my status."

"You really don't aim low do you boy, well I wish you luck in all those endeavours, I also ask you don't forget about me when you move to the inner city" Fletcher gave a sad laugh. Apparently, he had enjoyed interacting with James and had stopped seeing him as a kid and more of as a friend.

"I plan on bringing you up with me so don't worry, you'll see what I'm up to soon." Having said and done all he needed to James decided to leave back to his house, he estimated the noble would be back by now either with some form of crystal in hand or begging for his brother's life.

Chapter 35: Dark Past

As James approached his house, he saw the noble looking like he hadn't slept in these days whether this was from worry or his effort to get the crystals James couldn't tell.

"So you finally decided to show up, welcome back" James gave the noble a cold smile and just walked past him into his house.

Seeing him walk inside the noble followed him in; apparently, he was too tired to say anything.

When James got into his house he felt that something was off, he immediately withdrew his sword and spun around just in time to block the nobles sword that was swinging down on him. James hadn't even seen the sword on him when he walked inside.

After he had blocked the sword he felt himself being wholly suppressed, his level of skill was nowhere near the nobles, all he could do was hold out and try and get a solid hit in at some point. His guards were all running in after they had been instructed to wait outside by James. For now, they were no help.

Finally the noble made a mistake and James took it with everything he could, he swung straight for the nobles arm and managed to slice his hand off cleanly, his whole face got sprayed with the nobles blood that covered his face, and some even worked its way into his mouth. It was disgusting and smelt so strongly of iron if it hadn't been for the system passively activating all of his skills he would have probably thrown up right then.

James then saw a notification from the system pop up but didn't have the time to read it; he needed to stop the noble dying as at the moment he was his best chance to collect the crystals he needed. James cauterised the man's stump and found himself getting horrible flashbacks to his last life's end. His mind was entirely out of balance from everything that had happened. The system then followed up with another notification and when he finally got round to reading the information James directly passed out. The words that had popped up were ones that he never in a million years could have imagined popping up.

[Initiating DNA scan from sample]

[Similarity to hosts DNA indicates this man is the father of the current vessel]

When they saw James passing out all of his guards rushed to him to check if he had been hit and finding no damage on him they were all perplexed, why would he have suddenly passed out like this, finding no solution they grabbed a bucket of water and splashed it over him to wake him up.

'What the hell just happened?' After James regained consciousness, he saw the notification from the system again and managed not to pass out this time, although he was still massively disturbed by what he saw.

'This man is my father? What fucking luck I have, why did I have to get such a trash father in this world? Wait does this mean I'm holding my uncle prisoner?' There was something he hadn't told the noble yet, and that was they had no way to recover the muscles after they had been cut and the nobles brother was now crippled, in other words, James had assisted in crippling his uncle.

James stood up unsteadily and walked to the noble, now that he looked at him he began to see resemblance he hadn't seen before. Planting a kick on the man James woke him up, he had passed out when his hand was cauterised. That made two of his family members that James had crippled now.

"Wake up; I have some questions to ask you. The first being, what is your name?"

"Martin Rale, why?"

James couldn't tell if it was a coincidence with the man's name being so close to the vessels, but the system informed him that in the vessels saved memories there were very broken memories of a woman approaching James when he was very young and telling him his name was James Rale. Apparently, James had misspelt his name after hearing it because he asked a commoner who knew a bit of how to write to write it for him.

He had only seen that woman once in his life and after that never heard another peep from her,

now James speculated this was his mother but had no way of being sure.

"Did you ever have a child you threw away in the streets?"

"How do you know about that!?" Hearing that line was all James needed for confirmation. This man was his father.

"How old would that child be now?"

"About 13 now I guess" As the man was saying this his speech began to slow down and trail off, it looked like he had gone into intense thought.

"You?"

"Yes, I believe so."

"When did you find out?"

"Just now."

"Oh."

"Where is the woman who gave birth to that kid?"

After he asked that question James saw the man begin to get panicky, James had a gut feeling that this man knew exactly what happened to the woman and didn't want to admit that he had done something to her.

"I don't know" The man was now speaking in a timid voice.

"If you continue to lie to me I will do what you did to that woman to your dear brother, or should I say, uncle?"

This was the first time James was directly confirming that this man was indeed his father. Any remaining colour drained from the man's face, and he began to tremble.

"Tell me what you did to my mother."

"I had no choice; if it got out that I had cheated on my wife with a commoner, then I would be finished. No one would ever take me seriously again.; I had to do it, it was such an unstable time I had only just become a noble in the outer districts, I couldn't let anything go wrong. If only she hadn't approached you, I don't even know how she found where you were!" The man broke down and started rambling until he heard James again.

"I didn't ask why you did it; I asked what you did."

"I had to kill her, she wouldn't stop trying to approach you, I couldn't risk it."

"Where was she buried?"

"She wasn't, one of my men who didn't know the story thought she had stolen something from me so he." The noble was unable to reply after saying this much; he just broke down into tears in front of James, his son.

"SAY IT!" For the first time in both lives, James found himself completely repulsed and angry from the core of his being.

"He, he ch-ch-chopped her up and, and he, he fed her to the pigs we kept in the garden" After hearing that, James threw down his sword and began to pummel the man with his fists. He attacked with everything he had, James punched until he could see the bones peeking out on his knuckles.

The man was wearing under armour that James had shredded his hands on, but he still made sure to hit the mans face a few times for good measure. Thankfully with every hit he could feel himself calming down more and began to regain control.
