Chapter 15: The World

After 8 hours of reading, I have so much information that I don't even know how to begin to process it.

First off, the time in this world is the same as on Earth. 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, etc. I don't need to explain, do I?

The months are also the same. However, the local names are very weird; Voshkin or Xhincar or something like that. I'll just call them by their Earth names.

This is where Ed is very useful. He'll automatically translate any local month names into Earth ones! I knew I could count on him. The local language is completely unknown to me, since Ed is already translating it back into English.

Now, onto the geological landmarks. It is unknown whether this is the only land mass in the planet, so I'll just call it a continent to be on the safe side.

The Eastern most part of the continent is the Alphari Desert, which I spent a good 2 months in.

Moving west from that, we come across Border Town, which is where I am right now. Border Town is a part of the Kingdom of Corus, the eastern most and weakest kingdom in the continent.

In fact, Corus is actually a subsidiary kingdom of the Kharn Empire, which is located towards the west of Corus.

A range of mountains line the northern and southern borders of both, and any land beyond is uncharted. We really need a Lesser Dragon for this.

(A/N: A lesser dragon is a drake)

Kharn is one of the three major Kingdoms and Empires in the continent. We should be relatively safe here in Corus as long as Kharn still exists. There is not much information in this Border Town about the western most kingdoms. Relations with races other than humans are also not mentioned.

Onto religion. There is only one Church, and it worships the Goddess who reincarnated me while my dog was in charge. Subsequently, I have nothing against her, but the Church seems a bit evil in my opinion.

While they aren't human supremacists, they do act kind of like the medieval church. They claim that all Kings and Emperors must be ordained by them, otherwise it isn't a rightful rule. They also have the biggest army out of all of the countries.

There is no information on the political side of things at all.

Basically, this world is the same as the Feudal world back in the medieval ages. The only difference is magic and the existence of a tangible goddess.

There are 7 main elements of magic; Water, Fire, Earth, Wind, Lightning, Light and Dark.

Following that are the derivative elements, such as Ice, Steam, Lava, Death, etc.

Death magic is also known as Necromancy. As one can expect, the Dark and Death systems are completely banned by the Church. They advocate Light, and claim that Lightning is Heavenly Retribution on sinners. It'd probably be better to make a Salt element from the Earth element and turn people into pillars of salt. At least then we don't have to worry about seasonings.

Then, there are the non-elemental magics, such as Space, Time and Gravity. These magics are extremely rare, and only 1 in a million have the chance of awakening them. So far, no magicians with these magics have showed up in the Kharn Empire.

Magicians of two elements are called Dual Mages, while three elements make you a Grand Mage. Anything above three and you are called an Arch Mage. Utility Magic and Bone Manipulation don't count.

Right now, I can be considered a Grand Mage, since I have Necromancy, Fire Magic and Ice Magic. However, the option to change classes isn't there because my INT is below 80.

I asked Ed about a potential loophole, but he said that it has to be 80 before applying the Grand Mage class bonus – which means I'd have to keep Mage as my secondary class permanently. Since most of my fighting is done in close quarters, that might not be the best idea.

The nobles of every country are split up into 6 ranks – starting from lowest to highest is; Baron, Viscount, Earl, Count, Marquis and finally Duke. After that is the Prince and King or Queen.

Viscount Khardin would be under the control of an Earl, who is under a Count, and so on.

Barons are actually the rarest noble, since most hereditary positions start at Viscount.

Now, onto fighting. Everyone can access their own status, which shows their name, class and level. For some reason, age is not shown, probably due to privacy reasons.

Barely anyone is able to use Appraisal, so people judge strength by the aura or mana capacity they give off. Therefore, Arin, Arkan and Bork were probably also unaware of the actual strength of the Purple Death Scorpion they fought.

How unlucky. For me, I have Ed who can display the status of anything I want.

I say barely anyone because there are some Appraisal masters in the continent, but they are usually snapped up by the larger factions within seconds.

Also, according to the receptionist at the Guild, Arkan's party wouldn't even be able to be considered as ants in the Kharn Empire; which makes me believe that there are level 200s or above there. And I'm only level 34! I need to get stronger faster.

As for education, it is dismal. There is only one academy in this region, and it is in the capital of the Kharn Empire. It also only allows nobles or exemplary commoners. As a result, most people are illiterate and unable to do administration work. Again, what a waste!

There are also adventurer schools, where aspiring children can learn how to fight or survive in the wilderness. It seems like the Adventurer's Guild of this world are actually reputable and true to their name.

That's about it, I guess. With this new information, Ed has finally unlocked the Mapping function.

I now have a full map of the entirety of Border Town, as well as the regions that I've come across in the Alphari Desert.

Unfortunately, the map of Corus as a whole is rather underwhelming. That's probably natural, since I haven't been to any other places.

As I left, I was reminded by the receptionist that the exploration would begin in a week. I need to dismantle my Scorpion corpse and begin selling my items before I leave.

With much to do and not much time left to do it, I quicken my pace towards the dismantling area.
