Chapter 49: Payback(end)

"It all started with the dress. Now, from the stitches, it was quite clear that it was ripped off on purpose. Besides, I KNEW that the one in the ladies' room was familiar-"

As Liz began her narration of the events, both the CEO and Jenny both quickly understood that Elizabeth Redmaine had a bad habit: bragging.

She had a triumphant smile on her face, and with a shine in her eyes, Liz went into each detail about how she had put the GPS chip in the dress to test Jenny.

Right as she was about to reach the part where she had thought up the plan, she looked at the expressions of the two hearing her words and understood that her old vice was rearing its head again.

The shock and awe from before were still there, but it was slowly getting eroded due to her lengthy explanation.

Due to her tough childhood, Liz had always valued each thing she did right, as those instances had been few and far in-between. Hence, during such instances, she had the bad habit of getting that cocky look on her face and becoming narcissistic enough to speak about herself for a long time.

Of course, with growing age, she had learned to identify it and keep it at bay.

Yet, she wasn't perfect, after all, hence it had managed to rise up now.

Squashing it again, Liz switched to the shorter version.

"I knew that Jenny was a spy with Sylvex, and my aim was to show you the recording at a time when you could see its proof with your own eyes. Hence, it occurred to me that someone who accepted money to turn their employer once, wouldn't hesitate to do it again. To make sure, I went to your school, where I unearthed stories about the famous 'Greeny' who never shared."

This part made Jenny grimace as she remembered the events of her schooling years.

As for Will, he was placing himself in her shoes and was imagining about what he would have done in her situation.

After all, he had said it himself, from his reaction, it had been quite clear that he would suspect her regardless of anything.

Seeing that the expressions of awe were returning to their former level, Liz felt glad that she had made the identification and a decision regarding what she had been doing before.

"After finding out that greed was something that was in your character for a long time, I decided on my plan. I would get you here after telling you that you will be paid an incredible amount of money if you turn. I told you to come at 7: 30 pm with all the proofs you have. And I told the CEO that there was someone who was coming to meet with him because they had crucial information about Sylvex. The CEO was asked to come at 7: 40, so that I would have time to take and verify what you brought before putting the recording, letting the CEO in and letting him discover for himself just what kind of a person you are. Luke, here, my best friend since childhood, is the one who is familiar with the owner of this cafe. He convinced that person to let us empty it for the night, and also put the recording. Oh, and he also acted as the security and as Happle's staff."

During her speech, Luke had entered the room and had been standing while looking at the CEO with an indecipherable expression on his face.

As he heard Liz mention him, he only bent his head in acknowledgment.

"Like you must have guessed already, it was all about the timing. Of course, there were many ways that things could have gone wrong, but they didn't. And that, Mr. Will, is how everything came to be."

Taking a deep breath, Liz stood up straight while the smile on her face only got larger.

Looking beside her, she nodded at Luke, signaling that it was time for them to go.

She didn't care how the CEO would deal with Jenny. All she had wanted was for the truth to come out, and that already made her feel very satisfied.

"I'll see you in the office tomorrow, Mr. Will. I will take my leave. You can stay in the cafe for as long as you need. Just lock it on your way out."

Saying these words in a tone that brooked no argument, Liz saw the hapless expression on the CEO's face which meant that he was indeed, admitting his wrong, at least to himself.

Walking to the door with Luke, she turned around as she heard Will finally respond.

"I shouldn't have reacted the way I did. Can we resume that dinner?", he asked, in a tone that was still cold but was now laced with a faint tint of admiration and regret.

As she heard the question, Liz felt Luke freeze up beside her.

Noticing this, she hooked her hand around Luke's, knowing that his reaction was because of the memory of what he had felt when he had seen her in that state.

Continuing to the door, she walked out of it after leaving behind a few words that the CEO would always remember.

"Thanks, but no thanks, Mr. CEO."
