Chapter 74: Chapter 73 - The Game Changer
"It's time to leave."
I didn't want to go, I still had not gotten over the whole commotion. Dylan and his friends had taken advantage of Charlotte. Strapping her against her will and smacking her on the floor, threatening her, and stabbing her with those giant swords call rapiers when she refused to give them her coins!
"Come on, Evelyn. We cannot just stay here and look pretty. We have to go…"
I wanted to reply Caleb and give him all the excuses in the world, just to stay a bit longer.
"How are you going to get them back, just sooking here."
Janice was right, Charlotte had done everything she could to keep me hidden, she even created a path for me by sharing the coins she had stolen from me, to help us leave.
Taking a deep breath, I did the only thing I could, sliding my hands over Charlotte's face, I closed her eyes. Taking a step back, I used all the energy still inside me to stand up.
We had our four coins now. It was finally time to go and leave this place.
"Follow me."
Caleb moved towards the giant metal gate that blocked us from the outside world.
Dylan and his team had walked straight out from this door.
Now it was our turn to leave. Grabbing onto the coins that Caleb and Janice had passed to me, I gave it back to them.
Instantly we heard the familiar sounds of the bell ring again as the green cross glowed across their chest.
The door clicked, and we pushed the door out.
Janice was first to go, I could see the excitement in her eyes as she stepped out and stretched her arms.
She must be so happy to finally leave.
Caleb was next to go.
"We finally made it."
Taking a deep breath, I stepped out.
What happened next, was totally unexpected.
A loud siren rang,
I drop to the floor, hands covering my ear, expecting something bad to happen, only for loud clipping sounds to ring out all around me. I was not sure if it was safe to go out or stay inside.
Was it dangerous out there?
Caleb, and Janice were also unsure, they reached down towards me, grabbing my hands, pulling me back up onto my feet.
"Ahem…testing…1, 2, 3"
It's her…
"It's working Zoe…"
"Are you sure they can hear me?"
"Loud and clear…"
"Perfect!"
"Well, well, well my lovelies. It's me, Zoe. Your favourite trainer."
"I hope all of you have been having a blast."
"It's a pleasure to finally be able to reach out to you all again…"
"A little black butterfly has managed to collect all her lovely coins and paid for her chance to flap her wings and fly towards the exit."
"How exciting?"
It was Zoe again. This was definitely not the best of situations, something bad was coming.
"I'm sure all you know who this beautiful butterfly I am referring to is."
"It's of course, Evelyn."
"And because I have some bad blood with this little girl. You will all benefit from a little change I am about to enact on this test that has never ever happened before."
A loud boom noise could be heard all around us, as each wall and every gate door opened across the street.
"As you all know, in order to leave your defined section and make your way towards the bell tower, you will need four coins in order for the metal gates along the walls to open."
"Well, my dears, because lovely Evelyn has managed to escape. I am going to give each and every one of you all, a little present."
"All the gates in each of the four quadrans have now been opened, and you are all free to leave."
"But…the criteria remain the same, in order for you to leave this test, you are still required to attain four coins, and bring it to the top of the bell tower where you will be able to find a glass elevator which will take you out of the city."
I couldn't believe it; everyone was now free to come out.
"So, what does this mean for you?"
"If you are someone, who has managed to get four coins in your stealth, or through any shameless means, you are now marked, and please I would recommend you to make your way to the bell tower as quickly as possible!"
"For those who have not gotten the four coins, well, it's now a chance for you to get back all those that betrayed or took advantage of you. It's time for a good old sweet revenge. How exciting!"
"Oh, one last thing, should any of you manage to spot our little black butterfly Evelyn, and kill her."
"You will be granted immunity to the next event!"
"If you managed to steal her current 4 coins, we will also grant you immunity."
"It's an opportunity of a life time!"
"Time is running out. It is now a race between you and Evelyn."
"And for your record, Evelyn is not alone. She has two helpers who have also managed to get the coins."
"So even, if you miss out on the kill, it wouldn't hurt to steal the coins of her friends!"
"We will even throw in help, and change her marking from green to Pink."
"It's all up to you now."
"Tic. Toc."
A pink light crosses my chest, I drop my coins, but the marking is still there.
