Chapter 73: Chapter 72 – Charlotte

We continued walking. Around the city. This was so different to the previous place. It had high rise towers, buildings that were big and wide but they all had one thing in common.

All of them had cracked walls, smashed windows, and even skeletons lying on the floor with what looked like gear from war.

Were these skeletons real? They looked like they were centuries old. There weren't even any flies or maggots on them.

We were hearing screams left right and centre, kids chasing others, groups of kids picking on single kids. I felt so lucky for the fact that I had Janice and Caleb next to me.

Otherwise I could have been one of them.

As we turned a corner, standing right in front of me with her hands high in the sky was Charlotte.

And standing opposite her were three other kids.

I recognised the first one. He was tall, skinny and with two long swords that stretched out of his hand he looked like a demon. It was Declan.

And standing on the left of him was a girl, in black jeans, messy brown hair and I couldn't help but recognise her too. Taylor.

On the other side, dressed in a casual white shirt, with a open blue denim jacket and black jeans with short, gelled hair was a boy that looked exactly like Taylor.

They were shouting something towards Charlotte and she didn't seem to want to move. But we could still see the green light across her chest.

"Give us the coins, don't make us hurt you." The boy said.

"Tyler come on, just stab her and let it be done. Kids are doing that left right and centre. We might as well kill her and take what we need and go."

I turned to Caleb and wanted to ask if we could help Charlotte. She may have betrayed me and even took my stuff but I would hate for her to suffer the same thing I did.

Janice had her eyes on Charlotte.

They were hawkish as if she wanted to prey on her as well. If we could just take her coins from this bunch, we would also have four coins each.

But Caleb's face is firm. The look on it tells me that if we go rushing out that there will be nothing we can do. It will be a three on three, and it will be a bloodbath! And we will be on the losing end.

Still my heart tightens and I really want to step out. I can see the fear in Charlotte's eyes. She is turning side to side, with her back against the wall. She is surrounded, it reminds me of how I felt when she cornered me but seeing this happening to her did not make me feel any better

The sword stabs into charlottes chest with a loud thump. A loud scream, blood soaks the floor, as Dylan stabs again and again.

I knew he was fast, and that he was a good swimmer but I didn't think he was a cruel killer. With every stroke of the blade, he cuts hard into Charlottes body.

She screams and screams. And with every scream I just want to plunge out with my two knives and slash at the Dylan's face and tell him to stop.

But I cannot. Caleb has his hand wrapped against my mouth, and Janice is standing in front of me with her fork poked against my chest.

It's at this moment that my eyes lock with charlottes and as if she saw me, coins drop from her hands hitting the floor with a loud Ching.

It's over. Dylan pulls his sword out of charlottes body. And as if my whole world was in slow motion, Charlotte drops to the floor with a loud thump.

Dylan picks up the coins and I can see that all of them have the green line strike against their chest.

And they make a run for it.

Leaving poor Charlotte all alone on the floor defenceless. I run out, dropping to the floor next to her.

She is drenched in blood. There is a pool of it on the floor. I lift her up with tears in my eyes, wishing that there was something I could have done to help her

I can feel her breathing slowing, she is still looking at me, and she dips her trembling hand into her pocket pulling out 3 coins.

"Take it. It belongs to you. There's not much that this will do for me now."

And she tilts her head and drops dead.

Ding. It's the stupid tower again. But this time Janice and Caleb no longer hide. Instead, they walk towards me and stare in disbelief.

"She had seven coins! How could she?"

"She took mine."

"Well baby that's all the coins we need. Let's head out."
