Chapter 66: Chapter 65 - The Crypt:
We move our way down the tight stairs, it creaks and cracks with each step.
It's ancient, the wooden slabs are so worn out that there are cracks and missing bits on top. On top of that there is a thick layer of dirt and dust. It's like no one has ever cleaned it for the last a hundred years, leaving footprints as we step down.
But as we step down, to the bottom and our feet touch the floor, lights flash on revealing hundreds of thousands of bones stacked on top of each other.
It feels more like a catacomb then a crypt, the walls are basically filled with bones, skulls and loose bones.
No matter which way I look the passageway, and corridors are the same, just bones and more bones. It's as if its part of the architecture.
We must be the first ones who have been brave enough to come down here, because there is not a single soul and we must have activated the sensing system for the lights.
"For the mother of god!" I hear Hondo say in the background, he must be shocked, he would have never seen such a vast number of dead bodies in his life. And for them to put them together to make this hall way, it must be a very big shock to him. He even does the cross movement with his hands, as to respect the dead.
"This only confirms what I believe is happening."
"In order for those lights to have been activated, they would have had someone come down to install it, the technology is new, I believe it is LED lights, a special kind that does not cause damage to these bones, so the person who tested the lights must have used an alternative route to get here.
"The average Joe, would have had to travel down the stairs like us, but based on what we saw earlier, it looks like no one has come down that way like forever. "
I step forward, and move towards the spiral tower of skulls in the centre right outside the stairs, this is definitely old. When I turn around and look at Hondo he looks so stiff, he looks like his holding his breath and that he thinks something bad is about to happen to me.
"It's okay Hondo, here take my hand, and breath." I grab his hand and pull him forward, Hondo is scared, he doesn't want to move at all, But with a little convincing I manage to move him to the centre. He looks cute, like a lost puppy.
"Look Hondo, there is no such things as ghost. There is only the living and the dead. When we die, we all turn into matter and disappear."
"Why we stay?"
"No one will come!"
"They will Hondo, they will. Murphy's Law. If we have come down, there is bound to be someone else who will have the same idea. We just need to wait for them,"
"And once they come, all we have to do is give them the biggest scare! So they drop their coins on the floor and we pick it up."
"Wont we need to go back up?"
"Yes and no my friend."
"Yes we will need to find a way out of the catacombs, but no we don't need to come the same way we came in."
"Why?"
"Because as I said, there is bound to be another way out, how else did the person install the beautiful lights above?
"The lights are 20th century, but the bones are like 18th century."
"And my guess is that a technician must have come down to install it, the lights look very sophisticated, because lights can damage and wear out bones."
"But as you can see, the bones look very intact, they actually look like they have not moved or changed at all."
"So there's bound to be a secret passageway that will take you out of here,"
"All we have to do is find it, and get out."
"But before we do any of that, we need to first find a place to hide. Once we have gotten that sorted, we can find how to get out of here."
"Why?"
"We need to know how to get out, without being detected, and if we don't, know where we are going to be spending the rest of our time with the bones."
"We also need to hide or at least be in the people's blind spots, so that when the kids come down, we can spook them out! Based on the design of this place, I am guessing that any noise we make it will echo in the entire crypt!"
