Chapter 60: Chapter 59: The book
But it was not Augustus.
In the last moment just as the boy's knife stabbed into Augustus's chest. Ethan had thrown his lance, smacking the boy's shoulder with a loud crack. The boy was sent spinning backwards, only to meet Evan's sword.
Which ripped the boy's head, removing it clean from the body.
The boy dropped to his knees, and as if time stopped, fell forward, landing on top of Augustus.
"Buddy! We didn't make it this far only to see you die." Evan said while slapping Augustus in the face, trying to desperately wake him up.
The two boys that charged out of the staples were nearly here.
5 metres.
Evan continues to slap Augustus, harder each time, his face was getting red like a flower blossoming on the floor.
When Augustus finally screamed out.
"Stop it! It hurts man. Why don't you help me pull his body off instead?"
4 Metres.
Ethan reached out and pulled his lance out from the dead body.
Just as he did this a shiny coin dropped out of the body, landing right in Augustus's hand.
3 metres.
Augustus grabbed it, and instantly a line appeared.
2 metres.
Augustus reached out to the knife sticking out of his chest, and pulled. There was a sharp pain, but it came and disappeared so quickly he didn't care.
"They're nearly here."
The two boys form the Stable had their weapons out.
A mace and a knife.
Both close combat weapons, created for front line soldiers as it was cheap to make.
1 metre.
Evan stabbed forward, cutting the throat of the closest target,
Ethan stabbed at the one behind only to miss.
Augustus after getting up, with the knife still in his hand threw it out. Smacking the incoming kid right in the forehead.
"Wow, not bad kiddo. Not bad at all. How did you do that?"
"It's something I learnt when I was very small."
He had been taught at a very young age how to throw axes, and knives. His parents had always told him, that with his figure he would not be able to win in combat. So, what would be better is that in the situation he needed to fight. Use whatever means possible and throw whatever weapons was available at his enemy.
And maybe he will survive. It worked. He was still alive.
Seeing that the threat had been terminated. Augustus patted his chest. He wanted to know what had saved him. When he pulled it out, it was the book he had picked up from the castle that had been on the table.
Only thing was that in the middle was a giant cut, left behind from the knife the boy had tried to stab through his heart.
Augustus never liked reading, but this was going to be an exception. This book had saved his life, and if he survived, he was going to make time to read it, and learn everything inside.
He opened the book and couldn't read a single word.
"You sure are one unlucky kid, that's the second time you have gotten attacked. No three times, if you include us as well."
"That's because he is an easy target."
"With chubby legs like his, how can you not resist."
"That's enough Evan."
"I am just saying."
"What is the book anyways?"
"Not sure, it's all scribbles and pictures of weapons."
"Wonderful. Well back to the situation. We need to get to the other side. We now have all 4 coins for all of us. What's the plan?"
The distance from where they were standing to the draw bridge is not short, it was 400 metres.
"How are we going to ever make it to the other side? Have you forgotten how long it took Augustus to finished the first test?"
"Well brother, do you remember how he out run us back at the castle?"
"That's because…"
"Excuses, excuses. Don't start me."
