Chapter 52: Chapter 52: Evan and Ethan

How long had it been?

Augustus's legs felt like they were going to break at any moment, he was tired, his legs were sore, and it felt like he had been walking down the stairs for months. His whole body was soaked with sweat.

Why did they make watch tower's so freaking high for?

And why was he the one that they left at the top of the tower?

It would have been wonderful if he were the first person to have been dropped off from the group. Then he would not have needed to climb up the stairs and climb down them as well.

Augustus was exhausted, he was hungry, never in his whole life had he ever climb so many stairs and to make it worse, he was not even close to the bottom.

Maybe I can take a rest. Augustus thought to himself. He was in no rush to get to the bottom. It might even work out better for him.

Owen, his team leader, had given clear orders. Get the coins, no matter what. He had practically told the team that to achieve their goals, they could do anything, even if it means killing others.

Augustus maybe a hog, and when it came to food, maybe he would go out of his way to get it. But he was not a killer. This was not him.

Taking deep breaths, he dropped to his bum. He was going to take a rest. It was not the first time he had taken a rest though. He had already done it three times and wasn't even halfway down.

But who could blame him? The tower steps small, tightly confined, and wrapped around the tower. Only big enough to let one person come up at a time. It was not made for him, especially considering he was not the smallest of people.

He was literally glued to the wall, he had to actually push himself forward, to take another step, and each step creaked as the wooden slabs, dented in, and felt like it was about to break apart.

It also didn't help that it was night-time, and the only light was the one hanging at the top of the tower, Augustus could barely see what was in front of him.

Alright, this should be enough thought Augustus as he got up, placing his foot at the tip of the step, it gave way, cracking, he fell forward, face first.

Boom. Boom. Boom.

He dropped like a ball, crashing against the stone wall, and bouncing all the way down the tower and through an open door, which opened to the rampart of the castle.

Luckily for Augustus though, because of his size, when he fell, it was a slow and steady drop. His fats absorb the drop.

The rampart was a typical medieval style one, fortified stone walls, with gaps which allowed the individuals standing inside the castle to defend it by pouring hot liquid down the walls, rocks and even manholes for killing intruders.

Augustus was lucky he was still alive, looking at the other side, he saw another tower, not as tall as the one he had just come down from but still another tower that looked like it was connected to the keep.

There was no point continuing down from where he was, he had to go to the other side, it was the only way to get out.

As he walked across the rampart, he had to tiptoe and dodge dead bodies. The wounds were fresh, blood was still dripping down the corpses, and the walls were drenched in red and brown.

What kind of chaotic battle had occurred here?

All Augustus wanted to do was reach the other side, just in case one of the bodies suddenly woke up and grabbed him. This was the stealth test, not a free for all beat down. He continued walking to the other side, strange.

He had never seen this before, never at the palace, he used to live in with his parents, or when he had visited their family friends.

Standing tall, with their weapons out, were two giant knight statues.

Augustus knew it was a knight based on how they were dressed.

A helm that covered the head, shining armor, gauntlets, and a giant sword pointing down from between the leg. He looked like a honourees knight.

And standing tall with his arms raised, with a lance pointing forward, showing courage, strength, and deadly determination was the other knight.

It sent chills down Augustus's spine. Any intruder would be scared to make their way to the keep if they saw these two.

Maybe I could steal one of their weapons, would it be better for me to get the sword or the lance? But what use would it do? There was no chance that he would be able to use it, the weapons were the same length as him.

Besides, he was already carrying a weapon himself, a hammer, that he had thought of dropping, as it was weighing him down. If it had not been for the fact that his team were going to attack others, he would have never brought it, to begin with.

He continued walking across the rampart, taking the attention of everything going on around him. Through the cracks he could see children down below in the barley, running around with weapons as big as themselves chasing others, crashing into them and plunging their knives into them.

What have we become?

When he looked up again the statues were at a different position. The steel lance was no longer in the air in a swinging motion, instead, it was on the floor with the tip pointing to the skies.

There was something fishing going on.

Listening to his own intuition he ran back as fast as he could. And what luck it was, because the moment he turned, he heard stomping sounds of heavy metal against the floor.

Boom, Boom, Boom.

Never in his life had he run this fast before, he was tired, but the noise was getting louder and this only made him run faster, it didn't take long before he reached the other side.

He was back through the door, and up he went, one flight, two flight, three flight of stairs. He did not waste a single moment.

Boom!

There was a loud banging noise and then nothing. Had he lost them? Were their armor too heavy and big that they couldn't come up?

He reached the top of the tower.

There was nowhere to run now, the only exit was the windows, and there was no way he was going to drop out the window. The room was practically empty, apart from the table, the two chairs, the knife, and what looked like a notebook.

If they really came up, he was in a mess.

Click. Click.

They were coming, without a second thought, he grabbed the wooden chair and threw it down the opening.

Doom. Doom. Doom.

"Ouch!"

They were definitely coming now.

Augustus lunged forward, grabbing another chair and toppled it over the opening.

Doom. Doom. Doom.

This time there was nothing, grabbing onto the legs of the table, he pulled it over the opening, blocking the entrance, hoping with all his mind that whoever was down there, would not come up. Augustus backed away from the entrance, he was now between a rock wall and a hard place.

But it was no use.

Click. click.

The sound of footsteps continued to get louder and then he saw them.

The first thing Augustus saw was the wavy golden hair, then the icy blue eyes, that looked straight at him, sending chills down his spine. The boy was tall, at least double Augustus's height, wearing a purple and white stripe shirt, he had a big smile across his face, showing his bright white teeth.

But it was who he saw next that surprised him. A totally identical-looking boy with a blue and white stripe shirt, other than that they looked completely the same. They were twins and in his hand was a long sword.

"Silly billy, I could have sworn he came up."

"Did you check if there were any stairs going down?"

"He must definitely be here."

The boy in purple and white said as he raised his hand over his eyes, scanning left and right looking straight at the windows and the walls. He totally missed Augustus, who had fallen back and was pretty much lying on the floor.

"Idiot, his right in front of you?" the other boy replied.

"Oh? Where?"

"Hello wall, hello window, my name is Ethan. Nice to meet you."

"Not the wall idiot, down below."

"Good catch brother," Ethan said as he turned to look down. "Hello, Floor."

The brother grabbed onto Ethan's head and turning it towards Augustus.

"I still can't believe how stupid you are considering you only joined the world 5 minutes after me."

"Hey! That is not very nice Evan. Just because you got a bigger brain doesn't mean your smarter."

"Oh, there you are. I finally found you. Weren't you that boy that joined our team? Augustus right?"

Augustus gulped, they even knew his name, what was he supposed to do?
