Chapter 48: Chapter 48: The Church

7:34

Of all the places I could be in, why the church?

This is the most ridiculous place to be at, the place where stupid people come to find inner peace. It's not even scientifically proven.

How I despise these people, how can you leave the fate of your life in the hands of an unknown being? It's for the weak.

And what the hell. Why is there a green teddy bear on the floor?

It must have been owned by some stupid poor girl that thought this would be the safest place to hide.

That is the dumbest thing to believe. You are in a war. It would make perfect sense for the other side to blow this into smithereens because it is the fastest way to remove hope.

Alex was standing at the heart of a half-broken church, between burnt remains of wooden chairs, crumbled walls, and staring straight at what once looked like an altar. The timber floor ripped and filled with shattered glass.

The building looked ancient, with smashed drawings, patterns, that would have taken years to put together, and sculptures of gods that the people would have believed would save them.

What was he going to do now?

All around him, children were peeling off their blindfolds. It wouldn't take long before the bloodbath began. And what would be better than stealing from a defenceless little boy like him? He was the weakest link and the most natural target.

Dropping to his knees, he rubbed his hands against the dirt floor and smeared it across his face. He was going to play dead.

Picking up the teddy, remaining low, he rolled over, again and again.

His target was the pearl white half-opened sarcophagus.

If I can just get in there, maybe I can come up with a plan.

Alex rolled and rolled again. He was getting closer. He could feel himself within reach, pulling out the coins in his pocket, he unzipped the zipper of the bear and stuffed his three coins in.

The last thing he wanted was the cross to be on his chest.

Bump.

Quick as lightning, he slid his bear under the seat.

"Oh man, I am always absolutely, totally, completely, and utterly at the wrong place at the wrong time."

His body had collided with the feet of a big African boy holding a giant axe, and the boy was looking straight at him.

"Give me coin."

The boy raised his axe,

"I am so sorry…"

"It's gone."

"I don't have any…"

"You can check my pockets…"

"My socks…"

"My shoes…"

"My underwear…"

"Stop! Talk slowly."

"Do you want me to stand?"

"Do you want me to strip?"

"How can I make you believe me?"

"Get up."

Alex stood up, with his hands in the air, as the boy started to feel his pockets, and directing him to remove his shoes and socks.

There were fights breaking out insidethe church. Boys and girls laying low, sneaking around trying to steal from each other. Some were even checking the bodies of the dead.

"Poor boy. How did you lose your coins?"

"I have the worse luck ever..."

"I am always in the wrong place at the wrong time…"

"Someone must have snatched it off me…"

"I must have been too..."

"It's okay. You come with me."

"Thank you, but… won't I be extra baggage?"

Alex did not want to tag along. It was the last thing he wanted. But what could he do, if this boy found out, he was lying, he would be a dead man.

"It's okay. My name is Hondo. Where I come from, we look after each other, especially the weak. I also lost one of my coins."

Maybe it will work out. Hondo did look strong. If he can protect me, I can help him lookout for thieves, perhaps he can in return, help me get the missing coin I need to leave.

"Perfect. It's settled then. I help you, and you help me."

"Great. Let's go."

They walked down the side of the church, Alex really did have bad luck.

Because at this moment the Green Teddy Bear with its face facing the floor, that he had slipped under the chair had a green cross light up across it's chest. It was actually so faint, that the light matched the colour of the bear perfectly.
