Chapter 8: Chapter 8 - Goodbye
We made our way back towards the kitchen. It didn't take long before I spotted Lisa, sitting alone on an old wooden stool. And it was as if Maria must have known she was the one because we walked straight towards her.
"Evelyn, you came back, and this must be your friend and…Maria?
They stared at one another for a long time, before Maria gave me a gentle nudge and I stepped forward and grabbed Lisa's warm hand
"Lisa…look after her. Promise me you'll take care of her. She is gentle, caring, and loving. She's also a fighter."
"I'll take care of her as if she's my own."
It felt like a parent giving up their child to another parent. It was mesmerizing looking at them.
"Ladies, I hope I didn't crash your party, but Evelyn's paperwork has been completed." Giovanni had returned, holding a stack of paper in his hand. "My silly girl, have you taken a memory snap of everything?"
"Y…Yes."
I turned to Maria, hoping she would ask for me to stay, and urge me not to go. But she came next to me, and with her gentle hands, rubbed my hair, and bent over so her face was right next to me.
"Evelyn, I'm going to leave you with Lisa. It saddens me to see you go today but I hope one day you will come back and tell me the rest of the story, okay?"
"I will Maria. I promise."
She gave me a kiss and stood up. It must have been hard for her as well.
"Evelyn, this may be my last kiss, but remember always to listen to Lisa, even if you feel that it is not the right. She is your mum now. She will look after you. She will keep you safe and out of harm's way. So please trust her."
Hearing this, a tear started to form again in my eyes. Blurring my vision
"Don't cry too much Evelyn, if you cry all the time, your eyes will get swollen and that won't be pretty, now will it?"
"Yes Maria, I am a big girl now. No more crying."
Spreading my arms, I wrapped them around Maria and gave her the biggest and tightest hug. It felt warm, I wish it could last forever but I knew I would have to go soon. I walked back towards Lisa and grabbed her hand and we walked towards the door.
This was the last time I was going to be here. I turned back looking at Maria and Jason as they waved goodbye.
Shambles!
"Lisa, my friend Clarke would also like to come with us. Can he come too?"
"Sorry, Evelyn. We cannot take any more"
"But…"
"I am sure he will understand. Come on the car is waiting."
I wanted to run back inside and tell Clarke the bad news. I felt like I betrayed him. He had only given me one job and I blew it! How was I to face him again?
I'm so sorry. If I ever see you again, I will definitely make it up to you.
It was the last time I was going to walk through these doors, I turned to have one last look at the orphanage. The building was massive, old, with cracks that stretched across the walls.
It was always amazing that even though the orphanage was poor, it was still the biggest building in the entire city.
It's time to start my new life, I turned around and was shocked by the man standing next to Giovanni. He was huge, at least two heads taller than Giovanni, with sleek black hair, a tattoo that ran down his neck, he looked badass. It looked so strange that he was in a suit.
"Are we ready to go?"
