Chapter 40: Why Do you Care? - Chapter 33

David has fallen asleep in my lap. Jewel who had soon stopped crying was staring at me while sucking on her hand. I gently positioned David to hav his head resting on my chest. Just so he could be comfortable while sleeping. Adam stared at me while I did so.
"Why did you not leave?" I asked softly.
"I wanted to talk to you." He said. I looked up at him with furrowed brows.
"But why?" I asked. Instead of responding, he stared at me. His eyes staying on mine. I quickly averted my eyes to Jewel who still had her hand stuffed in her mouth.
"You must be hungry.." I said to her. She ignored me and continued sucking her hand. I shifted to the side of the bed while letting David sleep. I gently placed Jewel next to him before standing up.
"Where are you going? You just woke up." Adam said coming to my side. Only then did I notice the couple of inches that were between us.
"Jewels hungry, if I don't feed her soon she'll throw a fit." I said.
"You haven't even eaten." He said upset. I ignored him and reached for Jewels bag and pulled out on of the bottles I had packed for her. Adam stood next to me. I lifted Jewel up before positioning myself back underneath David. Adam continuing to stare at me as I did so. The room awkwardly quiet except for Jewels occasional giggles.
"Do you not like me?" He said. My cheeks burned from the sudden question.
"I already told you, I'm not good at this.." I said while taking off the cover of Jewel's bottle. She smiled excitedly before waving her arms up and down. I handed her the bottle while helping her hold it. She shoved it in her mouth.
"Slowly princess." I said smiling at her.
"How many months is she?" Adam asked changing the topic
"About 4 months now." I said. Adam looked at her in shock.
"But she's still so small?" He said. I smiled before nodding.
"Very sweet though." I said. Adam looked at me and smiled.
"You love them a lot huh?" He said. I nodded.
"Yea." I said. Subconsciously, I looked up and saw him smiling softly at me.
"What?" I said.
"It's just.." he paused. "Why?" He asked. I knew what he was referring to without him having to elaborate. I kept quiet. He sighed before standing up. "Sorry for bothering you." He said. He walked towards the door.
"W-Wait!" I said. He stopped. I slowly put Jewels bottle down.
"I'm sorry." I said. He must get annoyed pretty fast. But why did he still care about me?
"I'm just-"
"Not good at this?" He said. I sighed before looking at him.
" I'm worried. Not a second goes but that I'm not worried about them Adam. As sad as it sounds, I'm used to having the option to either feed myself or them. I can't let my guard down for even a second if I want them to be safe." I said to him. He slowly walked back to his seat. We sat in silence again.
"What happened to your bruise?" He asked.
"What bruise?" I faced him.
"When we first met. When you dropped your hair clip." He said. I closed my eyes tightly remembering what he was talking about.
"I...." I gulped. "It went away." I said. He nodded his head. He stared at me again.
"You... you can trust me, you know that?" He said. I looked at him sadly.
"You and I both know that might take a while." I said. He nodded before resting his hand atop of mine. I held my breath as I looked up at him. He was staring at me still.
"I know, but just know I'm here. Always." He said. He rubbed his thumb gently on my hand. I let go of the deep breath I was holding before nodding. He moved his hand away before rubbing his neck awkwardly.
"Thank you." I said.
"No need." He said.
I smiled at him before he left the room. I heard a small click before confirming he was gone. A shaky breath left my lips as I quickly wiped away a tear.
"What in the world is happening princess?" I chuckled softly before looking down at Jewel.
