Chapter 4: Jett's Goal
Unknowingly, they had been walking around for 2 hours. It was already 15:00.
The weather was as hot as usual. The boys were already sweating so much, enough to soak their clothes. Allen finally found a place to rest near a big tree beside a small pond.
Marco was the first to reach there, he sat down under the tree then exclaimed, "Is this tree artificial or real?"
Obviously, only Allen would be able to give Marco his answer and the other two wouldn't talk even if they know. "Of course, it's artificial. Even that pond is artificial." As he talks, he arrived in front of Marco and sat down as well. Heaved a tired sigh, Allen continued, "Only this kind of big organization can afford to have a pond as decoration."
When he said this, Allen looked rather sad but nobody seems to notice it. It might be due to the tiredness or the uncaringness. Finally, Jett and Eduardo also sat down as well. The tree was rather big. The four of them can sit in a row horizontally on just one of its side.
Facing the pond, there was gentle breeze brushing on their face. However, even this breeze is hot. They can sense the burning sensation on their face intensifying. Allen turned to Jett who was sitting on the leftmost beside Eduardo. "Why do you want to be a programmer?"
Upon hearing this question, the other two also turned their gaze over. They were also curious about this. Jett's goal wasn't strange or anything. It's just that not many people were interested in becoming a programmer nowadays. Artificial Intelligent Program can easily write out a program. The quality was decent as well. If one interested in this field, one would choose to be a developer or something else. Thus the question from Allen.
On the other side, Jett has a conflicted feeling over this matter. He had already avoided talking up until now. Does he have to break it and talk now? But there's no other way unless something comes up or he decided to act like a stranger to his roommates from today onward. In the end, Jett relented and decided to just talk a little bit.
The three of them also went through emotional control course and thus they clearly understand the current plight that Jett is going through. They just silently waiting for Jett to make up his mind.
Jett closed his eyes for a bit before a determined look appeared on his face. His entire disposition has completely changed. With a friendly smile, he gazed into the distance before narrating his story.
"You guys might have noticed that I still had to use my hand to trigger my contact lens, right?"
With this question, the trio started to contemplate the matter. Each of them has their own thought and opinion.
The contact lens uses subscription plans. You could pay weekly, monthly or yearly. However, that fee is only for accessing the operating system. As such, if one were to suddenly stop paying then the lens will stop working. It will then be nothing different from a normal lens for poor eyesight people.
The network connection is free but nothing in the network is free. Some of those couldn't be accessed even if you have the money. If Jett has the money, he would buy a program so that his lens will start automatically once he opens his eyes or with a single thought. In other words, Jett's lens right now only has bare basic functionalities.
However, what does this have anything to do with him wanting to be a programmer. If he wants to earn money in this field, wouldn't becoming a developer a better choice.
Before the boys could conclude anything, Jett started explaining. "You might be thinking that becoming a developer is better, right? As a developer, you might be able to earn more money faster but what you don't know was my personality. Do you think that a person like me can become a developer?"
When he put it like this, it makes sense as well. While becoming a developer seems like a better choice for most people, this doesn't apply to Jett. As a taciturn, he couldn't become a developer. A developer is someone who involved in the creation of a product from the idea to managing tasks and people. On the other hand, a programmer is someone who spends most of the times on coding. Talking to others were optional. Only need to focus on one thing and it's coding.
Besides, as Jett doesn't even have enough money to buy a small program such as the automatics wake up lens, how can he get enough money to hire people for his development team. Having reached this conclusion, the trio shot an understanding looks toward Jett.
Afterwards, the boys talked about themselves one by one. Jett didn't say another word after that. He only sat there to listen.
Jett's goal is simple. He wants to build everything on his own so that he doesn't have to buy it. Since young, he had heard of the occupation programmer. He felt that it was made for him as it fits him so well. Although he couldn't find much information on it, he still aims to be one without any doubt or hesitation. Everything he knows right now was from asking his father.
An hour has passed as the boys were talking happily under the big tree by the small pond in the academy area.
"Let's go back! We have to prepare for classes." The one who said this was Eduardo. He had been keeping track of time since they got here lest they unknowingly spend too much time here and be late for class.
Jett who was almost fell asleep woke up. He felt mentally tired because of the talk earlier. Allen and Marco stood up, however, their conversation didn't stop. They headed back to their dormitory in order to take a shower. It only took them 30 minutes to get back.
