Chapter 37: Shooting Game (3)

Hal drove the land rover to the area Cally had suggested. It hadn't changed and was still a wide somewhat grassy area between the beach and the dense forest. It was approximately the length of two soccer fields and was as wide at the north end as a soccer field but narrowed down at the southerly end. Cally had been trying to follow Ivar's movements in her mind's eye. Not an easy prospect under these circumstances but she was confident that Ivar was staying fairly close to the coast as he ran south. He would come through this place because it was easier and faster than running through the trees.

"Guys, you have perhaps two hours until Ivar gets here. I suggest setting up your nest at the southern end and I will lay blood lines to draw Ivar to the center of the field. He has run all this way to see me so I will be the bait." Cally laid out her part of her thoughts. Eagle, who had been mostly silent during the entire trip, turned and asked, "You have a bead on his location?" Cally nodded. "So this Ivar is part of your pack and you can feel him?" Eagle was wanting clarification. He was unclear on how Cally was sure this Ivar had gone mad and how she knew his location while he was moving. Cally tilted her head to the side and thought, "Hmm, you could say that." Cally decided against the complicated answer and went with what these two guys could understand and accept. Eagle gave a short nod. Pack Alphas could do this. Alphas would know if a pack member went crazy and if the Alpha was strong enough could find them as if there was a homing beacon placed on them.

Eagle pulled his weapon of choice out of the back of the SUV and opened its case. The M2 Browning machine gun sat perfectly in its case. This was not an ordinary snipers weapon. It was too big and too bulky. It weighed 38 kg or 83.78 lb. but if you wanted the 50 caliber round it fired, this was probably the best way to go. Cally looked on as Eagle checked his gun. Her face was calm and clear of any emotions. She could smell the light oil used to clean and maintain this beast of a gun. "The Ma Deuce." That will leave a mark." Cally continued in a quiet even voice, "The 50 cal. round can produce between 10 to 15,000 foot pounds of energy depending on your powder. The high ballistic coefficient of the 50 cal. also suffers less "drift" from cross-winds than most other calibers. "

Hal and Eagle stared at Cally in blank silence for a moment. She was still gazing at the 'Ma Deuce'. "You know your weapons." This was a statement not a question from Eagle. Cally looked up at him and gave a small smile. "The M2 has been around since The Great War. It has shot down planes, shot through stone walls, blown up munitions and fuel depots. Once upon a time it could take out light tanks. It is the perfect weapon to completely obliterate the head of a werewolf. How could I not know?"

"You guys need to get in the trees. I have my communicator. I'll let you know at the 5 mile mark and 1 mile mark as Ivar approaches. Are we good?" At this point Cally didn't need their agreement. It was more an off hand comment as she walked to the far edge of this killing field. She pulled a bowie knife from a sheath at her side and cut her hand and slowly laid down blood lines that led to the center of the field where she was going to make herself the target. She smiled bitterly. The 50 caliber round was going to hurt like a son of a bitch. Looking at the sky she could see it would be breaking daylight when Ivar got here.

It took some time to lay down the lines of her blood on the sandy ground. When you had to continually cut and cut deep so the blood would well up it was a pain in her ass. Cally got to her spot and made one final cut to her wrist, tearing through veins and arteries to shower the earth around her in blood, before the wound completely healed. If Ivar was not drawn to this much of her blood she'd rip him apart when she caught him. Staring at her arm she was thinking, 'some days I hate being a were. And most days are some days.'

CREATORS' THOUGHTS
Lupa_Capitolina Lupa_Capitolina

Weapon versus gun. I was taught to refer to rifles and other ballistic weapons as weapons. The ONLY exception to my training was the the machine Gun. As the Ma Deuce in this context is being used as a sniper rifle, I say weapon more than gun.
