Chapter 32: A mountain and two witches

After climbing down from her chair she went directly back to making the dinner.

Her husband, who went by the name of Jax as Mercy had told me went after her and although we were in a different room, his voice was impossible not to hear.

„Rosemary, could you prepare some food for these two as well. The young man who helped me worked hard. He deserves a sumptuous dinner to regain his strength.

Her reply was just as loud „sure, darling. But that will take some time. Entertain them in the meantime.

After this, there was only silence to be heard and Jax came back scratching his beard. It was obvious that he was struggling to find a topic to talk about but when he looked at me he seemed to remember something.

„Aren't you the one who asks everyone about the two elven siblings, boy?"

„Indeed, I am" I paused for a moment and continued with the question „but how come you are the only one who doesn't call them the cursed witches?"

„It is for two simple reasons. I don't like it when people are called names that may be insulting for them and the second reason is that I obviously know the names of my benefactors. They are called Daterna and Lifey and thanks to them the people of this small village have stopped calling me names. They often called me ‚mountain' mockingly. I asked them to stop but they wouldn't listen and I couldn't bring myself to hurt these weaklings just because they think I am different. The two elves often came to the village and bought wood from me during a cold winter. When they heard the people mocking my size again they simply walked over there and talked with them and ever since nobody has ever called me ‚the mountain'."

I looked at Mercy and then back at Jax. „Thank you Jax. I didn't hear much good about them. I thought I might have problems with them when I try to travel to Seadawn."

„You will, but somehow different from what you would expect" said Jax surprisingly.

„They won't let anyone take the route through the canyon if that person is to weak. There are some monsters inhabiting the canyon sometimes. The strongest ever found was actually a troll. That is a beast at the peak level of rank C. Many people would die if they ever encountered one. Fortunately for the wanderers Daterna and Lifey are safeguarding the entrance to the canyon and killing off everything that tries to escape from there."

„But why are they doing this" asked Mercy.

„Nobody knows" answered Jax „but they probably do it to show the other one who is better at something. They always challenge each other over every little thing in their daily lives."

When Jax stopped talking I looked at him and asked „Do you think you can talk to them to let us enter the canyon tomorrow?"

„Certainly, I do. But you might have to show you ability to survive in the canyon..." while saying this Jax peered into my eyes, probably to see some hints of hesitation but all he could find was determination, determination to enter the canyon, no matter the obstacles."

„Haha, I like your courage, boy! Alright I shall get you and your friends tomorrow morning. We will meet in front of your inn at the first ray of sun at dawn."

Jax was still chuckling slightly when Rosemary brought in a gigantic plate of bread and meat and everyone was staring at it with rumbling stomachs before Jax roared with laughter and said „don't just stare at it. Help yourself boys. You have to eat to grow strong. Even more so if you are leaving tomorrow.„

While he was still laughing half a loaf of bread had already disappeared into the lumberjack's mouth.

The meat seemed to be relatively fresh and I was grateful since it wasn't that common to eat meat even if you had guests for people who weren't very rich. The dark brown bread was quite coarse yet it tasted surprisingly good. Rosemary had to be a good baker to make such a delicious dinner.

She seemed to be reading my mind because right after I thought this she shoved half a loaf of bread in my hands.

It was indeed a very filling dinner and when it was over, both Mercy and I were almost unable to make it back to the inn and when we finally made it back to our room we immediately fell asleep, without even taking off our armour.

When the first ray of light fell through the small window the next morning Mercy and I were both still fast asleep, yet Theresa was already wide awake.

She took a bath since it would probably take some time until they had the chance to do that again in the near future.

Meanwhile Jax was waiting in front of the inn. He wondered where Mercy and I were since we decided on this time and place yesterday.

After half an hour later he decided to get us. He walked into the inn, bumping his head against the ceiling and asked the innkeeper while rubbing his forehead „Boy, can you tell me in which room the kids with the tons of beasts live. We wanted to meet in front of your in at dawn."

„Sure thing, mou..., I mean Jax! They might have overslept. I'll show you the way."

On the way to our room Jax hit the ceiling a few more times which woke up many guests of the inn, including Mercy and myself, and some of them wanted to shout at the person who caused this ruckus but as soon as their heads poked out of their doors they immediately fell silent upon seeing the huge Jax trodding behind the innkeeper. They immediately shut their doors again.

„Here this is their room. I will open it for you."

„Thank you, Boy" said Jax.

„No problem, Jax" replied the innkeeper and while opening the door to our room he asked „So how do you know the three kids?"

While entering the room, Jax thought ‚wait a moment did he say three?' and looked at the innkeeper confused.

For this reason he did not see the fist flying towards his face in time and it had already positioned itself perfectly in front of his face when he looked back towards the room.

He could only feel the pain in his face as he heard the voice of a girl screaming at the top of her lungs „get out of here pervert" as Theresa held her armour in front of her bare body with one hand while the other prepared another punch.
