Chapter 58: Not pleased

Greg was not pleased. He returned home with the full feeling that now everything would be completely different, it seemed he was already so close to the goal. Stretch out your arms, and he will be able to grab his wolf by the bushy tail. But in the morning he was awakened by a message from Lana that they had already left the hospital and will spend this day at home. The way it was written unmistakenly hinted that his presence is undesirable.

Of course, Greg decided to do the opposite and immediately prepared to go to her. Thousands of scenarios of a quiet day, which he can spend with Lana and the children, were spinning in his head.

While at the same time he could carefully finding out all the details of their mythical nature. But all the plans spoiled the call from Frank.

A friend personally looked into an accident that happened to Nicky. Despite the confusion of yesterday evening, the skills of the security director did not let him down, and while Greg was focused on Lana, Frank managed to agree with Kiki on a joint investigation.

The werewolves, hiding their existence for centuries, cleaned up all the evidence as if nothing had happened. But thanks to Kiki, they already had a full report from the mysterious cleaning team by lunchtime.

"I think I know where to look for new employees for my security agency now," - Frank said enviously, flipping through a big folder. In just a couple of hours, the unknown helpers managed to collect the whole thing. From a survey of all within a kilometer radius and the collection of all media files that could somehow capture the incident, to complete personal files on witnesses and participants. There was even detailed information on Greg and Frank. And judging by it, the shifters had loopholes not only in the police database.

"Let's focus," - Greg said to Frank, distracting him from reading through his own file. - "If they could keep their existence secret even nowadays, with tracking cameras, satellites and the Internet everywhere, then this should be easy for them. So what is looming there?"

"It's very odd, to be honest." - Frank replied, starting to take individual files from the folder. - "If you look at the crash map and the testimony of witnesses, the driver of the pickup is entirely not to blame for the accident. He had just stopped at a traffic light and calmly waited for the green light to come on. But as soon as the pedestrians, including our company started to cross the road, the car behind the pickup, which was also quietly initially, began to make strange maneuvers. After driving back a little, it hit the gas and crashed into a pickup truck standing in front, carrying it to the crossing. Moreover, it was an utterly inconspicuous car with tinted windows and without license plates. Immediately after this, the culprit disappeared, turning into the oncoming lane. Also, according to police reports, a similar car was stolen from a parking lot at the other end of the city in the morning on the same day. Summarizing all of the above, you can make two assumptions: either this is really an accident, and the hijacker suddenly became nervous at the traffic lights, lost control and tried to hide in the opposite direction in such a strange way, or it was a hit and run, the planned one."

"You mean they tried to kill us?" - Greg frowned. For a man of his status, there was always a chance of attack. Therefore, many representatives of his possition took with them an entire army of guards. Frank often started to persude Greg that it was time to get at least a pair of security, but it seemed to Greg too much. He perceived any restriction of his freedom with hostility, and there was no reason for fear before.

"It is not so clear." - continued Frank. - "The goal could not be you. Our meeting with Lana and the children was absolutely spontaneous. You always come back home by car and leave it only in the underground parking. It was impossible to predict that today we will cross with Lana and the children and decide to walk. You can certainly assume that the goal was Nicholas or Lana herself. They often return home this way. But the question arises, who wants them dead?"

"Do you think it could be somehow related to their kind?" - Greg began to scroll through the various options in his head and try to bring all the available information together. Judging by her word in the hospital, she had already been attacked by the shifters that night. Is it possible for someone to hunt her and why did she suddenly withdraw from him?"

"I don't think these were werewolves," - Frank said, interrupting Greg's thoughts and handing him a sheet of handwritten text, - "this is a note from Kiki, that big fellow from the clinic. He also read the whole case and claims that it could not be werewolves. First of all, they just don't do things like this. It is not in their nature to harm someone with the help of other means. They never even use knives if they need to attack someone. Why, if there are claws and canines more sharply than any steel. And behind the scenes, it is considered a manifestation of particular weakness."

Greg quickly skimmed through the text. This Kiki indeed argued that the shifters could not be involved in this incident, besides if the purpose was just killing, then any werewolf was aware that such an accident would hardly kill the werewolf. Nicky was affected so much, only due to his age. If Lana had gotten into this situation, everything could have been easier.

At these words, Greg hesitated. The mere thought that such a thing could happen to Lana caused the blood to freeze in my veins. Frank, probably guessing the reason that Greg's face had suddenly turned pale, tried to divert his attention.

"If we assume that an ordinary human was driving and that the goal was Lana, then there are several options." - Frank began to sum up. - "Either it's someone who does not like your relationship with her, or it's someone from Lana's side, whom she forgot to mention, as well as a lot of things ..."

Greg winced, a whole tangle of dark secrets and riddles formed around him, and the further, the more questions arose.

"I have an idea," - Frank began, but his mobile immediately interrupted him.

"Yes," - Frank answered without delay, turning the phone on the speaker. Greg pricked his ears, realizing that it was not just a normal conversation.

"Frank, hey, can you speak?" - They heard Martin's easily recognizable voice on the other side.

"Yes."

"In short, as you asked, I watched Miss Benne and the children all day. As you requested, I didn't look particularly into their affairs but watched the situation overall. They did not leave the apartment, nobody came to them either. But just an hour ago, Miss Benne left the building alone and headed somewhere in her car. I assumed that maybe she was going to the store or for some other business. But she drove directly onto the highway and flew away from the city at full speed. I followed her, but soon she turned onto a narrow country road that led through the forest and then I lost her. There were so many turns and forks that I did not even understand where she could have disappeared. Not one of the tracking devices that was installed in her car is working. What should I do?"

Frank looked at his friend.

Greg angrily clenched his fists, his lips were stretched in a line, and those emotions that were splashing in his eyes did not promise anything good. Quickly making a decision, Frank ordered Martin to stay in place and wait if Lana would return in the same way. When he finished the conversation, Greg had already risen from his seat and headed for the exit.

"What are you up to?" - Frank called him.

"I'm going to visit nighty kids first, then I find her and make her confess everything. With any means. This woman will really drive me crazy! I need to buy a f*king leash already!" - growled Greg on the move. Frank sighed wearily but followed him. It was essential to figure out the situation and quickly. From the amorous-melodramatic story it somehow promptly became a crime and fantasy crossover.
