Chapter 4: Letting Go

On the last day of reading, she finally finished the book. She set the book down on the table and asked him, "Did you really relate to the poems in the book?"

"Of course. I should since I wrote them."

She felt a tightness in her heart. "You really loved her, didn't you?"

He gave a peaceful smile as if he was finally able to let go of all the sadness in his heart, "Yea, I really did. Since this is the end of the reading, you don't have to come anymore. Thank you for indulging me. I'm a bit tired so I hope you don't mind if I go take a nap."

She didn't say anything as she watched him locate his way to his room. She left the house with a sense of disappointment in her heart. It was the last day, but she didn't want it to end.

The next day, she couldn't find it in her to wake up early and help out at the bookstore. Her thoughts were still on him. Finally, she couldn't take it anymore and decided to get out of her house and trudged to her family's book store. When she entered the store, she saw multiple stacks of books waiting to be stored. She was shocked, when did they get so many books? She looked at the stacks and found that they were somewhat familiar looking but she couldn't register where exactly she remembered seeing them before as she had never read them.

Her parents were doing their best to find places for the abundance of books. Seeing their troubled faces, she decided to help them find storage for all these books. As she was place some books on a shelf, she heard her parents talking.

"It's really too bad that he can't read these books anymore" her mother sadly stated.

"So many books he's collected and he can't enjoy them. But he sure was awfully nice to give them all to us," her father replied.

"He said he almost couldn't part with the books, but as he's moving away, he can't bring everything with him."

She heard everything her parents said. Everything seemed so familiar. Their descriptions seemed to match him. She took a look at the books she was placing on the shelves. Now she realized. These were the books she had seen on his shelves when she first entered his house. He was moving away? She placed the book back on the stack of books and ran out of the book store leaving her parents with puzzled faces.

It took all her effort to run, only stopping when she reached the front of his house. The once familiar house she came to everyday now seemed cold and desolate. She went up to the door and knocked. No familiar shuffling of feet on the other side of the door greeted her. She hesitated for a moment before deciding to open the door. What greeted her was emptiness. There was nothing in the house anymore. No books, no chairs, no desks. And especially no him.

She looked around again and found that there was actually something left behind in the empty house. On the bookshelves that had once contained many books was just one lone book. She approached the shelves and picked up the book. It was the book of poems that she had spent numerous days reading to him.

She opened the front cover and discovered writing that was never there before. When she finished reading what he wrote, she closed the cover once more. She felt a dampness on her cheek and realized she had started to cry. She wiped away her tears and took the book back to her house.

For the next few days, she didn't even dare to open the book again. Looking at it would cause her pain in her heart, but not looking at it caused her even more pain.

Finally, she got off her chair and strode towards the book as if finally coming upon a decision. She took the book outside and found a place outside of town devoid of people.

She stared at the cover once more before finally being resolute in her decision.

She burned the book.

She stared at the flames engulfing the book until all that was left were ashes.
