Chapter 1: An Unoriginal Beginning
My name is Adam, and I died.
Yup, I died. A truck hit me like in one of those ridiculous isekai fanfics. It really confused me when it happened, because I was at work in the middle of a plastics production factory. I can't figure out what must have gone wrong for a truck to end up barreling through the middle of a warehouse like that, but it had to have been a catastrophic series of events.
If I seem a bit too calm about my apparent death, that's because it happened a long time ago. At least I think it did, I'm not too sure honestly. After the truck hit me I found myself in some weird black place. EVERYTHING is pitch black here, I can't even see myself. I can feel my body though, and I pinched myself so I know I can feel pain. I haven't gotten hungry, but I'm not sure what that means, if anything. My time in this place has changed my perspective on things. I took things for granted in my past life, too absorbed in my problems to appreciate the good things that surrounded me every day.
I was just an average middle aged American man, going through the day to day motions that made our great country operate. I enjoyed bacon, guns, and margaritas. I had trouble making friends because my political views were 'strange' and nobody could see past that in the 21st century. I got married young, really young, and had a kid that my ex-wife made sure I never got to see, thanks to a verbal fight she and I had that I didn't know she was recording. In hindsight, I should have realized it was weird how she wasn't being as aggressive as usual in that fight, just egging me on until I said something stupid. That was 23 years ago, and I reunited with my son a few years back. We talked about what happened between his mother and I, and in him I found a kindred spirit in suffering. His mom really sucks. I spent most of my life after my divorce working my ass off and making occasional ventures into the dating scene.
In my mid thirty's I found the treasure trove that was Japanese manga, and that opened the door to a whole new world of entertainment for me. Of course, I couldn't share this with anyone. An almost forty year old anime nerd? Talk about weird. So I worked and slept and enjoyed reading manga, novels, and fanfics until around 3 weeks after my 42nd birthday, when a fucking truck hit me. Now I've spent what feels like another 42 years wandering around in this endless black...
Oh! A light! Holy shit, how long has it been since I saw light?
I move as fast as possible toward the blinding light that just appeared in the distance. *THUNK* At least I thought it was, turns out it was right in front of me and it's very solid. Then my ears are met with what I can only describe as a perfect imitation of Optimus Prime's voice from the original animated series.
??? - "Greetings, Adam Prescott. I am known to many of your kind as Truck-kun. Welcome to my realm."
The darkness surrounding myself and 'Truck-kun' is banished as a bright light shines from the heavens down upon us both. He looks like movie Optimus in truck form. That's not even what the truck that killed me looked like, it looked like an F-150. What the fuuuuuuu-
Adam - "I uh... I've actually gone insane, yeah? I'm in a straight jacket in a padded room right now, aren't I?"
Truck-kun - "You likely have many questions, Adam Prescott, allow me to explain for now and I will answer any that remain afterward."
I nod slowly, still questioning my own sanity.
Truck-kun - "I am a divine being willed into existence by the belief of humans, as are all divine beings. The humans that willed me into existence hold the belief that I kill humans that then reincarnate into other worlds, and so that is exactly what I do. It's not something I have control of, but I can control how I go about it. So today, I shall present you with my Reincarnator Special deal. You can choose any world to be reincarnated into, and you can make 3 wishes of limited power before you go. How does that sound, Adam Prescott?"
'What a fever dream this is. I'll play along for now, I guess. Not like it's the first time I've been on a bad trip... If any world means what I think it does, that's a lot of power in and of itself.'
Adam - "...What limits do the wishes have? And define 'any world'."
Truck-kun - "The wishes cannot give unlimited power, or anything on that level. As far as the worlds, you can choose any world you can think of. Movies, television series, anime, novels, etc. A surprising number of people choose the Game of Thrones universe..."
Adam - "Gotcha, so what if I don't want to choose the world I go to? Could I get another wish?"
Truck-kun raises an eyebow. 'Wait what!? How did he do that!?'
Truck-kun - "That's the first time I've been asked that... Sure, why not. We'll roll on a wheel for the world and I'll give you another wish."
'YES! The best possible outcome! Chances are I'll get reincarnated in some random Slice of Life anime/manga or Romance novel.'
Adam - "Badass. How about if I wish for infinite potential with magic or something like that? I know you said wishes can't give infinite power, but I just want the ability to grow without reaching a cap, not infinite power outright."
Truck-kun - "Your questions are very odd, Adam Prescott... I will allow you your infinite magical potential wish, but it will cost you two wishes. I will also make it so that no matter what world you reincarnate in, you can still use magic. Is this acceptable?"
I rub my hands together and imagine using magic in a random Slice of Life world. 'This guy is just handing over all the goodies for free, I wonder if genies are this forgiving.'
Adam - "Yeah, that's more than reasonable. Would 1 wish be able to get me biological immortality?"
Truck-kun - "Biological immortality is easily within the confines of a single wish."
Adam - "Sweet, and the last wish I'll use for a perfect memory. If I managed to live long enough that I started forgetting things, that would really suck."
Truck-kun - "Done. Your wishes are for an infinite magical potential, biological immortality, and a perfect memory. Are you certain these wishes are satisfactory? I could give you full immortality instead."
Adam - "Yup, that's all good. Full immortality might seem like a good thing, but most versions of it are actually curses in disguise. I'd rather not deal with it, to be honest. Besides, if my potential with magic really is infinite, I'll eventually be able to get some version of it anyway."
Truck-kun - "Very well. Let us find the world you will be reincarnating into."
Truck-kun pulls back and then turns to the right, and a huge wheel looms in the sky, illuminated by lights all along its frame like... Oh god it's the Wheel of Fortune. YUP it's the wheel of fortune, it even makes the sounds. Hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands of worlds fly by as it begins to spin rapidly.
Adam - "Hey Truck-kun, how long was I in here before you came?"
Truck-kun - "4 minutes 27 seconds, why?"
Adam - "... No reason..."
Oh, it stopped. Wait, what is that?
Truck-kun - "A My Hero Academia variant, interesting. Enjoy your new life Adam Prescott, and farewell."
'Shit, I forgot to ask the most important thing!'
Adam - "Wait! Before I go, can I have the Sword of Omens as a freeb-"
And then everything went black... Again.
