Sometimes it's the way the death is described. In 'The Hunger Games' when Rue died. The author described it in a very vivid way. Katniss' reaction and the whole scene of her mourning Rue. It made us feel the horror of the games and the innocence that was lost. It was a death that made us empathize deeply with the characters and the situation in the book.

When it serves as a major turning point in the story. In 'Romeo and Juliet', Juliet faking her death led to Romeo's real death and then her own. This was a central event that changed the whole course of the story. It was a tragic chain of events that was so well - written it stays in our minds. The way Shakespeare built up the tension and the miscommunication made their deaths unforgettable.

The emotional connection we have with the character. For example, if we've been on a long journey with them. Like in 'Lord of the Rings' when Boromir died. We had seen his struggle with his own desires and his growth. His death was a shock and made us feel sad because we had come to understand him.
