I can't believe that so many people are saying this is a dumb mindset, I think she's completely correct in thinking that. The academy wants a stereotypically perfect hero, not someone who has wants and desires.

Be worked in an office, like a normal person. He also happened to be a complete nerd. But during his best friends birthday party, he gets beamed by a pillar of light? How odd... A bit later, he wakes up laying on a tree, some stuff to his side. He looks through the stuff, and finds a small bottle. It says to drink it. I was wondering how he understood their names, but I assume they gestured to themselves and said their names, just saying.
The older elf's name was Nayta, while the younger one was named Melina. Other than knowing that they were mother and daughter, he couldn't learn anything else through gestures alone. Gestures just aren't enough.
