From what i know Arjuna was son of Indra and Karna of Surya. And their rivalry go back even beyond Mahabharata era as Karna was an Asura named Sahastrakavacha who had blessings of an Armor with thousands of layer and each layer was impenetrable other than by someone who performed penance for tens of thousands of years and after breaking one layer the one who broke it would die . So Vishnu took 2 forms named Nara (present Arjuna) his simple human personification and Narayana(present Krishna) his divine persona and send them to perform penance and eliminate him . And when one of them died by breaking a layer he would send other one to fight and revive the first one and the cycle continued but then when last and most important layer remained the Asura became tired and escaped in long river of time and became karna and both avatars if Vishnu merged in him to be used when necessary (during Mahabharata ).
