Understandable, but from what I've read so far, it's not really dark or gritty. It mainly focuses on interactions with pokemon (plus everyone worshipping the Gary Stu protagonist)
My friend, you are completely right. As for the synopsis... sigh, it's slightly misleading. I was fooled as well. I've read a bit further and it seems that he doesn't rise in rank, nor is it as comedic as the synopsis made it seem. However, it has some nice bonding with pokemon, and how they become each other's family. Plus it does offer a new kind of Pokemon Fanfic that I've never seen before. Hope you'll enjoy it!
