They are not really cannon fodder. They are the standing army for their Faction. If they lose a whole bunch, then they are more vulnerable to large scale wars in the future. Plus, Yokai are more unique and not large in number. If they lose a lot of certain species, they may go extinct.
Well at this point they basically lost this war, right? They came for revenge, but their numbers are like only over 10k and they just lost over a fifth of that or more during this brief encounter and they have not even made it to the Winter Queen yet. Will is lucky none of his girls died in this stupid and ill-informed invasion. By the time they manage to get back at least half their army will be dead. That is a major loss when there are the Chaos Brigade still running around.
