~ Two Years Later ~
So, here we are present day. Ever since the night that Yunjun had given everyone, including myself, a most frightful scare... I have been living here in the dorms with all of them, in the guest bedroom. Yunjun rarely speaks when I am around, and I am told he rarely says anything anymore. It is almost as if I could compare him to a shut-tight clam. I really thought that I could get him to open up, but it feels like every step I take forward with him, I end up taking two steps back. As a doctor, I feel frustrated that I cannot get through to my patient. As a friend, however, I am more than worried about him. I have not even thought of bringing up the past once to him, but now I find myself considering it in hopes that he may start talking again. Even our private sessions usually consist of me asking questions and seldom receiving an answer, and when I do, it is only ever a one-word answer.
As I look down at my watch on the right wrist, the time reads 1:03 p.m. I sigh as I glance up at the door again for what feels like the hundredth time. I look around the small office, hoping that there is something I can occupy my mind with until my patient arrives. Being in the company building, I know he can’t get lost since he has been with the company for over nine years. His appointment was set for half past noon, but he has yet to show. Lately, he has been skipping out on his sessions, so I am just hoping that he will show up today.
A few more minutes pass by when I finally hear a knock on the door. I take a quick glance at my watch one more time... 1:16 p.m.
Well, better late than never.
I thought to myself before calling out to the person on the other side of the door.
“Come in!”
The door slowly creaked open to reveal a disheveled-looking Yunjun. His eyes are red, and there are dark circles under his eyes. He avoids eye contact with me as he comes in, quietly closing the door.
“You’re late, Yunjun-ssi, but I am glad that you decided to show up today. I was beginning to think that you were not going to show again,” I continued as he sat down on the couch adjacent to my chair by my desk.
He sighed, briefly tilting his head up toward me. It looked like he would say something at first, but then his eyes fell back to the floor again. He sank back into the couch a bit, his hands and wrists loosely laid against his thighs.
“How are you feeling today?” I tried to start us off with a fundamental inquiry. As usual, though, I did not receive an answer. I decided to continue. “Have you eaten yet today?” I was met with silence yet again. “Did you get any sleep last night,” I asked as I continued, trying to pry a response from him. “What about music? How is your writing going?” This finally got him to look up at me. I studied him as he bit the inside of his cheek and started to sit up.
“This was a mistake,” he mumbled quietly as he stood up. He started to head for the door, and as his hand reached for the door handle, I made a rash decision.
“I remember,” I blurted out a bit too loudly.
Okay, I knew I was desperate to get him to stay and open up, but why did I have to say that?! I could have said anything else, but...! Oh, hell... Well, the cat is out of the bag now; there’s no turning back from that.
He froze with his hand in mid-air. He looked like he had tensed up, taking in a sharp breath.
“I remember,” I repeated more softly this time.
He dropped his arm back to his side as he turned his head to look over his shoulder. “Excuse me? What did you just say?”
“I said that I remember. I remember that day,” I struggled to maintain eye contact.
“You will have to be more specific, Doc,” he said flatly with a hint of curiosity as he fully turned around.
“I remember meeting you on that rainy day all those years ago.”
He tilted his head in confusion. “So, you lied to me when you first told me that you had no idea what I was talking about?” The confusion on his face was slowly turning into sparks of anger, “Instead, you decided to make me wait for two years while I felt like a fool?”
“Yes, you could say I lied, but it was for your own good, Yunjun-ssi. I wanted you to forget about the incident. Remember that I told you that I want to keep things strictly professional between us? That was true.”
“Why the hell would you not tell me sooner?!” He suddenly yelled as he stomped forward, gripping onto the arms of my chair.
“I didn’t want you to get hurt-,” I started before he cut me off.
“To not get hurt?! Are you so blind that you cannot see that I have been suffering since you first told me that you had no memory of me?! Those words cut deeper than any blade ever could!”
Good going, Melody... You fucked up.
“So, it is my fault after all then. I guess that makes me a pretty shitty doctor,” I admitted, feeling guilty.
“Of course, it is YOUR fault! I told you that you were the reason why I became so successful! Do you have any idea how much you mean to me???” He shouted in my face as he continued.
“All I did was help a kid get back on his feet, Yunjun-ssi.”
“You did so much more than that... You helped me pick up my things in the rain that day and took me home because I had no home to call my own. You let me stay with you for the next couple of years after that until I signed a contract with this company and became a trainee. You were more than just a friend that I looked up to...”
“Yes, I did. I was trying to help you follow your dreams to be a musician. You called me your mentor back then.”
He sighed, lowering his voice. “Do you remember the love song I wrote during the time that I stayed with you?”
“Of course, I do. It was beautiful.” I replied with a smile, but my smile quickly disappeared from what he told me next.
“That song...,” his eyes softened, “It was about you.”
Ffffff- Red alert! Red alert! We have a situation! Remain calm, Melody... REMAIN calm. ...Nope! IMPOSSIBLE!!! I wish the ground would swallow me whole...
