章節 15: Chapter 12: Mad Scientist

Hi guys, here's another chapter for you. I'd like to say that if you haven't noticed, the MC is a bit crazy, so don't be surprised by what he did in this chapter. I'll try to bring the next chapter on Sunday. Well, enough talking, leave comments and power stones!

The neon lights and constant tapping of keys filled the room. Wires and screens covered every corner of the laboratory, where a lone human reviewed reports, data, and metrics. DNA chains were projected on the screens, along with sticky notes covering the walls in an organized chaos. If any scientist in the field were to review the notes, it would advance the field of medicine by several centuries at the very least.

It had been a week since the battle against the gem monster that devoured anything that shone. A few things happened during that time, like the small detail that Connie almost — and I say almost — started to worship Nora and me as if we were gods. Convincing her otherwise was much harder than it should have been. I even considered altering her memory, but in the end, I discarded it. Why?

Well, I still don't know how to modify memories perfectly. Maybe nothing would have happened to her, or perhaps her soul would have turned to mush. And the implications of that... I could have permanently killed someone. How would I have explained that to Nora? Plus, Connie is an important part of the original story. I don't know what effect it would have on the plot if something happened to her. Garnet would probably have tried to kill me. There were too many "maybes," so I decided to do nothing more than speak with Connie. In the end, I had to explain that we aren't gods, although I didn't reveal my weaknesses, of course. I knew that even if she couldn't harm me, the mere fact that she knew that information was already a risk.

And then there's Garnet's note... That changes a lot. If she left a written note, it implies that I must have done something significant enough to alter the plot of the episode, but that didn't happen until the very end. Her second note, and the absence of more after that, suggests that she saw an "absolute future" or at least "the most probable future." If I had decided to act differently, there would have been more notes, more clues, or even a direct intervention from her. But that wasn't the case. That implies she not only saw the result of my inaction, but also its long-term repercussions.

What scares me the most is WHAT THE HELL DID SHE SEE FOR HER TO TELL ME NOT TO INTERFERE.

"Damn it!" I exclaimed, slamming my hands on the keyboard in frustration as I continued reviewing the data on the computer. The memories of that week were still fresh, especially the conversation with Connie.

That girl is incredibly stubborn, but in the end, I managed to convince her... though I get the feeling it wasn't entirely.

I set aside the possibility of facing Garnet — "I have neither the means nor a reason to do so" — and focused on more important things.

I haven't given up on technomancy, though the results have been... disappointing. I feel like I'm doing something wrong, but I can't figure out what. So, I redirected my attention to other matters, but I still practice technomancy in the afternoons. God, there's so much I want to investigate: runes, grimorie spells, alchemy, blacksmithing, hammer combat... and how to make more money.

Though I'm solving the latter long-term with the most cliché thing an isekai protagonist can do: Start a tech company. Well, more like software, which is easy considering the internet here is only twenty years old. I took advantage of that, did market research, and evaluated the products I could make. Balancing time and profit, I decided to bring the wonders of Excel to this world. It didn't give me immediate money because I released the free version, but — here's the catch — the companies had to pay for the license and the Premium version has enough benefits to make people decide to buy it. Only a few companies and some people have bought it, which has left me with a profit of a few thousand dollars after taxes. Damn government, with a 45% tax rate. No matter how powerful you are, you'll never escape taxes.

One would think that with so many projects and investigations, I wouldn't have time to interact with the canon. Well, wrong. Anticipating this, the same day I fought the worm monster, I created a spell in the grimorie that restores the body to a state where you have all your endurance. Of course, this spell has limits, like it doesn't restore wounds or prevent aging, but that's beside the point. Now, I can functionally work all day without sleeping, eating, or needing water, as long as I use it properly. I only need to use it twice a day if I'm not fighting. In that case, I wouldn't know how many times I'd need to use it. Ah, I'm getting off track.

I've been focusing on biomancy lately, which is both the simplest and the most complex of all disciplines, depending on what you're trying to do.

Obviously, I'm not going to experiment on myself with something as dangerous as altering my DNA. Minor modifications, like changing skin color or nail growth, don't require altering the DNA—just a minor adjustment to my body's morphology. So, I went to "buy" some mice to use as my first experimental subjects.

The first thing I did was take away their ability to reproduce. The last thing I want is a plague of mutant mice with powers running around. Then I started with the important part: finding the key to eternal youth.

Why? So many things to research, so much to discover, so many experiments to conduct, and I have a lifespan of, what, maybe a hundred years? Hahaha, nope, I won't accept that.

Now the important question: Why do we age?

There are many causes: cellular deterioration, shortening telomeres, environmental radiation, bad habits... though environmental causes are complicated to eliminate, biological ones, on the other hand, I can tackle.

Did you know that using the formula p*i+k+u= spell, where 'p' is power, 'i' is intent, 'k' is knowledge, and 'u' is understanding, the implication is that I only needed some basic knowledge about something to make it real, or alternatively, to put more psychic power into it. This is where the real trick comes in... Psychic power. A tiny error that I can exploit, have you discovered it yet? If not, let me explain.

Well, if you haven't, the last thing I said was "put more power" so I didn't have to really know how to do something, but I did need a knowledge base for it. Using this, I made a set of cells from mouse A mutate so that its telomeres wouldn't wear out. After that, I made the cell more resistant to environmental radiation.

The result: cells that don't wear out, don't deteriorate, and can't mutate. Do you know what that means, right? Eternal youth, or at least the first steps towards it.

A manic grin spread across Adrián's face as he continued writing notes and notes of his research.

But you know, that's not the best thing I got out of this situation. Now I could study those cells and understand how they worked, which would allow me to use the same formula to do something even greater than what I did before, since now I would possess more knowledge and understanding, then repeat the process in a continuous improvement cycle.

Do you see the implications, don't you? Not just eternal youth, but much more. Immortality? No, that's barely scratching the surface of the true potential. There's something much bigger waiting.

"HAHAHAHAHA!" My manic laugh didn't stop as I continued focused on analyzing the data.
