章節 242: CHAPTER 238

"Well, its been fun but I'm afraid this is goodbye." Tom articulated as he grabbed his jacket to leave.

"Honestly I don't get you man, you treated my wounds after beating the complete shit out of me. Yet you didn't get an ounce of info on Jamie or anything concerning the benefactor like you hope to."

"I don't have to worry about Jamie, he'll come to me sooner or later. Especially since everyone he sent after me never returned to report back to him." Tom replied with a smirk. "While I wait for him to come get me himself… I would advice you worry more about yourself at the moment and not concern yourself with other people's worries.

"I advice you take your leave now, sir. The police are almost there." Gwen's voice reverberated in his ear. "The police will be here any moment now, you wouldn't have to wait too long."

"I don't know what kind of trick you used against Char and I, but I assure you Jamie won't lose to the likes of you. He would use you for sport before ending you." Fang threatened, not a single doubt in his eyes as he spoke.

"I look forward to meeting him, unfortunately for Jamie he won't be able to cause me as much as a scratch." Tom said with a chilly sense of confidence as he stared him down.

"I wouldn't be so confident if I were you. I was wondering why you took the actions you did, or why you were so confident to engage us."

"And?" Tom asked with a raised brow, wondering what conclusion Fang came to.

"The look in your eyes says it all already, although you do a great job in concealing your true nature but I'll give you an advice as a parting gift, think of it as your reward for lasting this long as a target of the Sparrows."

"Get on with it already, I have quite a busy schedule today." Tom wasn't interested in hearing whatever he had to say, but it wouldn't hurt to indulge him one last time.

"Remember, pride often leads to the downfall of men who has never tasted defeat. I'll be out of prison in no time, and if Jamie hasn't finished you, I will take my sweet time in killing you myself." Tom could hear the disdain in Fang's voice as he spoke, he's last sentence was filled with so much resentment, especially when promising to kill Tom once he got out of jail.

"I doubt you would get to see my face ever again, so good luck with that." After his short response, he took off from the scene, slipping away from the incoming police vehicles at the nick of time.

Police vehicles surrounded the building, securing every possible escape route before making their way into the building, seeing nothing else but an injured man in al bed.

They immediately surrounded Fang who laid crippled at the middle of the empty space, covered in bandages. They trained their guns on him as they approached with caution.

"Relax officers, as you can see am the victim here." Fang tried playing the innocent victim card, unsure of what info Tom had given to the police about him.

"Call an ambulance, we're taking the suspect in." Commissioner Gordon instructed, dressed in a bulletproof vest and gesturing with his gun for his subordinate to search Fang incase he intend on doing anything funny.

"There's something around his neck." An officer announced as he cautiously proceeded to investigate the collar. "It's one of those collars used for neutralizing meta powers." He confirmed.

"There's a key over her." Another officer reported, certain it was the key to the dampening cuffs around Fang's neck.

Fang thought it impossible for the police to have any sort of evidence or identification on him. The Sparrows had insiders in the GCPD so he wasn't bothered for he was likely to regain his freedom in a week or less.

To this thought, he chose to remain silent and let the police carryout their so-called duties without showing a shred of resistance or showcasing any form of suspicious behavior.

….

Later that evening the gang were off to their own activities at home. As usual, Tom was up in his room, going through certain work in his computer as he finalized a few deals.

His company building over at Metropolis was near completion and he had a bunch of business proposals for Ghost.

As he reviewed the offers, he noticed a lot of them were jobs he could just assign to Gwen like he had been doing for the past couple of months. Her algorithm was precise enough to direct heists and many other organized crimes without a snag.

One request which stood out was from a drug cartel which needed help importing a drug so rare that it could hardly be found even in the black market.

"Compound V-13 huh." Tom mused out loud. It was a drug rumored to give temporary meta powers. The request mentions importing just a crate full of this drug but the pay was very good.

"This drug is not only rare, but was no longer in production." He thought out loud, typing on his computer as he surfed deep into the dark weeb in search of it but found nothing.

There was no way of replicating that drug because the German lab previously responsible for making it with intentions of making normies feel super, and for the creation of super soldiers, was blown to bits by opposing countries before they could complete the formula in other to give it a permanent effect.

Tom let out a small laughter in amusement as only one conclusion added up while putting the little puzzle together as to how they got their hands on a crate full of it. "Those greedy bastards must have bought every compound V-13 available on the black market, now wanting to resell it for the price of a kidney." As Tom considered accepting the job, he was interrupted by Gwen.

"It's almost time for the evening news, sir." She informed. "Thanks Gwen, inform the others so they meet up at the living room." He replied before heading for the living room.

Making his way past Jason's room, he noticed the door was half way opened and he caught a glimpse of him staring out the window.

"Hey Jase." Knocking on his door, Tom pushed it a bit wider before going in. "I'm heading downstairs, you should come too." Tom called out to him but did not get a response as Jase kept staring out the window like he was in some state of hypnosis.

Tom found this behavior to be quite unusual so he walked up to him. As he approached, he noticed Jason's eyes were fixed out the window like he was caught in some sought of trance, sweating and fidgeting with his thumb and index finger.

"Hey, Jase." He called out with a louder tone as he firmly grabbed Jason's shoulder. "Yes…" He finally responded, averting his gaze to look Tom's way.

"Dude, are you okay?" Tom asked, fully aware it was probably from previous trauma. Either from the time Joker beat his ass to death with a crowbar, or a side effect of being raised from the dead.

"I'm fine, let's go see how well Vicki and the Commissioner did their job's." He replied as he gestured for them to head down to the living room.

Tom didn't ask questions regarding what might have triggered what Jase just experienced, but put it aside as they went down the stairs, only to find Leo laying on the couch with an opened magazine resting upon his face.

Using his powers, Tom tossed the magazine to the table. "Move your legs aside bro, that's my best spot for a good angle of the TV." He proceeded to drop off Leo's legs from the couch as he sat on the available spot, intentionally disrupting he's comfort.

Jason grabbed the remote and switched to the news channel, the headlines were according to the story he feed Vicki Vale as Red Hood, all except one which caught both Jase and Leo off guard.

The news made it known to the public that two key members from the terrorist group responsible for the gas explosion and the murder of police officers who tried rescuing civilians held hostage by this group, had been identified.

The news mentioned the police had been tracking them for some time but certain individuals who call themselves the Outlaws, got to them first. They confirmed the death of a female member, found dead by the sea shore and with signs of a battle around the scene.

They mentioned the police receiving a tip about the location of the other, but he was already in bad shape when they got to him.

Unfortunately he was killed at the hospital while under police custody, shot dead in his hospital bed.

Jase muted the TV as both him and Leo turned to Tom for an explanation, Fang's death was nowhere included in their briefing.

章節 243: CHAPTER 239

"You did it didn't you? How did you?" Jason wondered if Tom had dirty cops take out Fang at the hospital by pulling a few strings.

"Of course he did, unpredictability is one of his many quirks." Leo replied, still awaiting for an explanation.

"Fine, I had Deadshot take him out from a couple blocks away, snipping him through the window of his hospital room. Now their leader could either decide to end me himself after continuously losing members, or keep sending more annoying pawns to their death." Tom could instantly see the confusion on their faces, more questions brewing within their minds.

"If you were going to kill him from the very start, then what was the point of it all?" Jason asked, he could have easily killed Fang the same night he did his girlfriend but Tom didn't.

"Why bother putting in that time and energy in tormenting the dude to that extent if you weren't going to get any information from him at the end of it all?" Leo couldn't phantom why Tom didn't press on to drill out the location of the enemy's base, but instead proceeded to piss them off some more.

"Yeah, you killed his girlfriend in front of his very eyes, kidnapped him, beat him till he was near death's door, then you tricked him into believing he had been rescued from that hell, only to bring him right back." As Jason continued to break it down, Tom continuously nodded confirmation.

"I can't imagine what you must have gone through to have you this fucked up, but you're one twisted mother fucker." Leo looked at Tom and couldn't get the slightest glimpse of the young bartender he met almost two years ago.

"When you realized he would rather die than sell out his comrades, you got him arrested and had him killed later on." At this point both Jason and Leo began to question Tom's sanity as they demanded for an explanation.

"The look in his eyes made it clear to me that if I pushed any further, he would take his own life, probably by biting his off his own tongue." Although he would rather leave them to think whatsoever they wanted to believe but he decided to breakdown the reasons behind his unexplainable actions.

"Having him shot at the hospital was to plant the idea that someone else might be taking out their members instead, and not the innocent dude they intend on killing."

"But we lost our only possible lead to locating this Jamie guy." Jase seemed disappointed by the outcome.

"Don't worry, he'll come to us. Remember they know where I live, Jamie would probably come after me himself." He casually mentioned like it wasn't a big of a deal his enemies knew where he laid his head at night.

"It might seem reckless and unreasonable but it is the quickest way of calling out their leader." He added, wanting to put an end to it all before the Sparrow's relentless assaults began to draw unwanted attention towards him, especially since he had a club opening in a couple of days.

"I think we should consider relocating, he forgets he's the only invisible one among us." Jase turned to Leo with that suggestion, earning a nod in agreement as Tom was currently a danger magnet.

...

The Batmobile roared through the rain-slicked streets of Gotham, its engine a deep, thunderous growl as it pursued the fleeing van. Inside the van, Scarecrow's minions worked frantically, aware that Batman and Batgirl were closing in.

"Batgirl, we need to cut him off before he reaches the dam," Batman's voice was steady through the coms, his eyes locked on the road ahead.

"Already on it, Batman," Batgirl responded, her bike weaving through the narrow alleys as she took a parallel route. "I'll meet you at the dam's entrance."

The van skidded to a halt at the edge of the Gotham dam, and Scarecrow leaped out, clutching a large canister. He was followed by a dozen of his masked henchmen. Batgirl arrived first, her bike screeching to a stop as she dismounted with a graceful leap.

"End of the line, Scarecrow," she called out, her voice unwavering.

Scarecrow turned, his face twisted into a sinister grin. "Ah, Batgirl, so good of you to join us. I was just about to make Gotham's nightmares a reality."

Before he could make a move, Batman's shadowy figure appeared behind him, having approached silently. "Not today," he said, his voice a low growl. "Batgirl, let's take them down."

The henchmen charged, and Batman and Batgirl sprang into action. Batman's fists connected with the nearest thug, sending him sprawling to the ground. Batgirl ducked under a swinging bat, delivering a swift kick to another's knee, dropping him instantly.

"Watch your left!" Batman warned as two more thugs rushed Batgirl. She spun around, using her momentum to knock them both back with a series of precise strikes.

Batman grabbed one of the henchmen, using him as a shield against another's attack before tossing him aside. "We need to get to Scarecrow," he called out.

"On it!" Batgirl replied, disarming a thug with a quick twist of his wrist and using his own weapon against him.

As they fought their way through the henchmen, Scarecrow attempted to slip away towards the edge of the dam. Batman caught sight of him and launched a Batarang, knocking the canister from his hand. It skidded dangerously close to the edge, teetering but not falling.

"No!" Scarecrow screamed, lunging for the canister. Batgirl was faster, intercepting him with a flying tackle. They both tumbled to the ground, but Scarecrow was quick. He pulled a small vial from his sleeve and stabbed it into Batgirl's arm.

"Barbara!" Batman shouted, throwing a final thug aside and rushing to her side as Scarecrow made a break for it. Batman reached into his utility belt and quickly injected Batgirl with an antidote. "Stay with me, Barbara," he whispered, resting her against a wall.

With a grim determination, Batman chased after Scarecrow. He cornered him near the dam's edge, but Scarecrow, with a final mocking laugh, hurled himself into the dark waters below, vanishing into the night.

Batman returned to Batgirl's side, only to find her eyes wide with terror, her breathing erratic. "It's not working," she gasped, her voice filled with fear. "It must be some new formula…" Batman realized.

"We're getting out of here," Batman said, lifting her gently. He rushed her back to the Batmobile and sped towards the Batcave, her condition worsening by the minute.

In the Batcave, Batman laid Batgirl on a medical table, his mind racing. Foam began to form at her mouth, and she convulsed slightly. "Hang on, Barbara. Just hang on."

He analyzed the vial's contents, his fingers flying over the keyboard. "Come on, come on…" Minutes felt like hours as he worked, finally synthesizing a new antidote. He administered it, watching her closely.

Her breathing began to slow, the foam receding. "That's it, breathe," Batman murmured, relief washing over him as her body relaxed, slipping into a peaceful sleep.

He sat by her side, the Batcave's dim light casting long shadows. "I won't let him get away with this," he vowed softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "Rest now, Barbara. I'll make him pay for what he did to you."

The silent hum of the Batcave enveloped them, a moment of calm in the storm that was Gotham. As Batgirl slept, Batman began to self-reflect.

"I've made a similar mistake before and it cost me Robin's life in the hands of Joker, here I was repeating the same mistake tonight. Almost losing Batgirl in the hands of another psycho." He muttered as Alfred placed an arm on his shoulder.

"What happened with Jason wasn't your fault, neither was this." Alfred comforted him with a reassuring tone, stopping him from drowning himself in another series of self blame.

"But this wouldn't have happened to Barbara if she wasn't out there tonight? Ever since Jason's death at Bosnia, I've had this fear of losing another child, knowing they wouldn't be put into such danger if I didn't put them there in the first place." Batman stood up from his seat, walked over to take a look at Barbara as he considered going back solo for some time, at least until he felt it was okay for her to resume duty.
