章節 36: Servant of Set Thor Part I

He remembered it clearly, the moment when All-Seeing Heimdall blew the Gjallerhorn. Thor had been young when it happened, when Ragnarök came to Asgard, no more than ten years old. A child, a weak and helpless child who could do nothing but watch as his father marched out to meet the forces of Ragnarök.

He remembered seeing the fire Demon, Surtur.

The army of Frost Giants led by their King, Laufey.

The forces of Dark Elves and Trolls all marching towards the gates of Asgard.

The golden legions of Asgard marching to meet them.

The strange beast that came from the sky and unleashed a third host of warriors into the war of Ragnarök. One that fought to destroy both Asgard and its enemies. Two warriors, in particular, one that could even wield the great hammer, Mjolnir that fought against his father.

He remembered cheering his father on, watching with bated breath and excitement as his father fought. He remembered the panic that filled the throne room when the walls of Asgard were breached. He remembered the great Valkyries charging into the fray upon the flying steeds, their warrior cries screeching through the air.

He remembered the moment the forces of evil broke into the palace, killing all those in their way. He remembered clasping a sword and charging into battle them, the Queen, his mother, Freyja by his side unleashing powerful magicks as the civilians of Asgard bore arms to defend their lives.

Thor remembered it all.

The fear, the excitement, the pain, the exhaustion, the sadness, the guilt, the longing, the envy. He remembered everything from that day, even the moment when he stood alone, Freyja giving her life for him. His brothers, Baldur, Loki and Hermod slaughtered, his friend, Sif killed. All the emotions he felt in that moment gave way to rage as he thought. He didn't know how long he fought alone, seconds? Minutes? Hours? Thor remembered only the rage he felt within him and charging into the battle alone and despite killing a few, being brought down.

He had been a child, not even a warrior of Asgard.

Yet he had fought like one and in his dying moments, Thor had thought that he would ascend to the halls of Valhalla. That he had earned the right, that he had died a glorious death.

Only to find himself awakening in the body of a child. The people around him, his family as he had come to know were weak. They weren't Asgardians despite looking like one, they were more like Midgardians. His family itself, a simple fishing family that lived in part of a small coastal village, one that was raided many times by pirates and bandits.

A village on the outskirts of all kingdoms of Hyboria, not part of any of its kingdoms. There Thor lived, a Midgardian child, weak and helpless. Yet strangely, Thor found that he didn't care, he in fact quite enjoyed his life here.

There were no restrictions, no stifling politics and etiquette required from a Prince. His father was always around, loving and caring, his mother was the same whereas Odin and Freyja had always been busy with matters of state and ruling. He was an only child, loved and cared for to the fullest extent despite not being from a wealthy family.

It was a strangely fulfilling life, one that Thor had grown used to over the years.

"We have a big haul today, son." His father praised a large smile on his ageing face, one hand grasping his shoulder. "This'll see us fed for many weeks to come." Thor, now named Bjorn nodded his head, pulling up the net, in its clutches large quantities of fish. In most cases, it would require an entire group of men to lift up such large cargo.

However, despite being a Midgardian, Thor was strong, stronger than men twice his age. Despite being only sixteen years of age, Thor was easily able to lift this up and dump it into their small dingy, it rocking precariously.

"Shall we return home, father?" His father laughed, hugging him joyously.

He liked this life, it was hard and tiring, working constantly. But there was something about such a simple life that appealed to him. He liked it.

Breathing deeply, Thor let his tired arms rest, his father throwing the rope onto the side where one of the men on the docks grabbed hold and helped pull them into the side. "I'll tell you what, I'm envious of your luck, Naeen." The man on the dock said, looking upon the fish enviously. "How much is that?"

"Enough for a while," Naeen admitted, taking the offered hand and climbing up onto the deck. His tone though was distant, he had seen the look in the man's eye, same as Thor had. "Though I imagine we'll be losing most to taxes from those fuckers of Stygia."

The man nodded his head, the look of greed disappearing, a little amount of fear creeping into his eyes when he saw Thor jump up. Even though he was only sixteen, Thor was taller than many men, well-fed and very muscular. He towered over the man and as to show his strength even further, he reached down and pulled up the net filled with fish all in one go.

The best way to deal with guys like them was to simply show what would happen if they tried anything. Thor had done this on many occasions. "If you'll excuse us, we have to get home."

They had already fulfilled their taxation to Stygia earlier in the week, this would be their food for the next few weeks. Though no one needed to know that, if they did Thor knew they'd be coming to steal from them.

Sighing tiredly, Thor laid back on his bed, staring up at the ceiling of his room. Their house wasn't huge, but at least had enough room to provide him with his own room. In a way that made them one of the richer fishermen families in the village, but not by much. There were man far richer people out there, the mayor of their village being one.

Strange how he preferred this to a large extravagant home like the one he had on Asgard.

'Come to me.' Shooting upright, Thor looked around his room, fists clenched in preparation for an attacker. None came, but even then, Thor didn't release the tension of his muscles, instead of reaching to his side and pulling out his little knife. It was short, a cutting knife more than anything, but one Thor kept with him at all times. 'Come to me.'

And again the voice sounded, Thor, looking around his room and still finding nothing.

Warily he rose from his bed, checking every corner of his room, making sure there was nowhere he had overlooked. 'Come to me.' All the while the voice in his head kept playing over and over again. 'Come to me. Come to me.'

It was then he heard a loud bang outside.

Scowling angrily, Thor marched towards the door of his room, expecting to see someone having attempted to break into their house. It wasn't an uncommon thing in a small village like this, but he had thought that people in town knew better than to try and steal from their family, especially after what he did to the previous lot that had tried. 'I guess not.' He would just have to remind them why they shouldn't mess with his family.

Except, the moment he opened his door, he was greeted by the sight of his father, covered in blood. Upon his head was a strange hat that seemed to be carved into the shape of multiple snakes, each with red eyes formed of some kind of jewel. Behind him, laid out on the floor was his mother, a large hole through her stomach, blood pooling out onto the floor.

Thor just stood there, looking upon her form in complete bewilderment, struggling to comprehend what he was seeing. But it was then his father rose his hand, a bright glow surrounding it.

It was pure reaction, instincts and reflexes he earned from his time training within Asgard and that final battle of Ragnarök all came back to him as they did every time he entered in battle. He stepped to one side, avoiding the energy blast, then he slapped it down, the second one slamming into his bed and destroying it.

All the while the hand holding his knife swung up and buried itself into the underside of his father's chin, piercing straight into his brain. It was a reflex, not an intentional movement but one born of a need for survival.

The moment this all dawned upon him, when he realised exactly what had happened and what he had done, Thor collapsed to his knees and cried out. It was raw, all the emotions at that moment crashing down upon him and let it all out into a roar of pain and agony.
