"Hey, it looks like the opening ceremony has started," Lu Cheng said, looking outside. A massive flame shot into the sky above the venue, exploding into brilliant fireworks that lit up the night.
"Ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to the opening ceremony of the Zhejiang U20 Youth Pokémon Trainer Tournament! I am your host, Leo!" A man in an immaculate suit stood on stage, his voice ringing out clearly. "Now, let's give a warm round of applause to welcome the BKA48 girl group to the stage!"
The lights dimmed, and a spotlight illuminated the stage. In its center, a platform slowly rose, revealing a group of girls arranged in the shape of a heart. It was none other than the BKA48 girl group. The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, with some enthusiastic fans waving glow sticks in support.
"Is this group really that famous?" Mu Mei asked curiously.
Lu Cheng, barely suppressing his urge to cheer, explained, "This girl group is one of the most popular idol groups in recent years! See the girl in the center? That's their lead singer!"
The group danced in unison, using fans to conceal the center before parting again. In the middle of the stage, a soft pink Jigglypuff appeared, standing on tiptoes, eyes closed, and completely lost in its song.
Lu Cheng's eyes widened in shock as he froze, turning to stone. "The lead singer turned into a Jigglypuff? This pink, balloon-like creature with its puffed-up body can be an idol?" he thought, desperately holding back his reaction. Mu Mei next to him watched with a smile, saying, "This Jigglypuff is really cute."
"Y-Yeah, haha!" Lu Cheng forced a laugh, trying to cover his embarrassment. The audience burst into applause as the BKA48 group took their leave, their performance a resounding success.
The host reappeared on stage, his voice booming through the speakers. "Thank you so much to the BKA48 girl group for their amazing performance! Let's give them another round of applause!"
"And now, we have something truly special! I know a lot of you here are Pokémon Trainers, or you aspire to become one. You absolutely don't want to miss what's coming next!"
"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the 28th National Championship semifinalist, Gongsun Rong, and the champion of the Asia-Pacific Chinese Trainer Tournament, Wu Ye, as they showcase an epic Pokémon battle!"
"Does that mean there's going to be a Pokémon battle next?" Lu Cheng asked excitedly.
Mu Mei nodded. "Both of these trainers are exceptionally skilled. This battle should be amazing."
Hearing this, Lu Cheng quickly sat up straight, his eyes glued to the arena. He even released Vulpix and Treecko so they could watch the match with him. Observing how these top-tier trainers strategized and managed their battles would be incredibly valuable for a rookie like Lu Cheng.
"Ladies and gentlemen, get ready for something spectacular!" Leo exclaimed. "Field switch, initiate!"
As he spoke, the stage machinery whirred to life. The round platform descended, and a massive battle arena emerged, complete with two platforms for the trainers to stand on.
"Oho! It's a Rock Field!" Leo announced with excitement. "The Rock Field is a special terrain filled with sharp rocks and spikes. If the Pokémon aren't careful, they could be in serious trouble!"
The arena provided plenty of space for large Pokémon to show their strength. A swarm of Alakazam and Claydol, under the staff's guidance, set up Reflect and Light Screens over the battlefield to ensure everyone's safety.
"Now, let's welcome our trainers to the stage!" Leo continued with fervor. "On the red side, we have the competitor who delivered an outstanding performance in the National Tournament, renowned for his incredible endurance and fighting spirit—Gongsun Rong!"
"And on the blue side, the champion of the Asia-Pacific Chinese Trainer Tournament, a genius trainer with a massive fanbase—Wu Ye! Let's give them a big round of applause!"
Gongsun Rong, a massively built man with a thick beard and bulging muscles, took the stage with a powerful presence. On the other side, Wu Ye received thunderous cheers as he walked in, his baby-faced looks and light blonde hair giving him a youthful and approachable appearance.
"Let the battle begin!" the host declared.
Gongsun Rong, unfazed by the atmosphere, wore a stern expression as he tossed out a blue Great Ball. "Go, Rhyperior!"
A ground-shaking roar filled the stadium as Rhyperior stomped onto the rocky field, its hulking frame and massive drill horn instantly intimidating the crowd.
"Oh! Gongsun Rong has sent out Rhyperior!" Leo exclaimed. "Its Rock and Ground dual typing gives it exceptional defensive power. Combined with its drill horn, this is a true powerhouse of offense and defense!"
Despite the intimidating display, Wu Ye remained calm, his smile unwavering. He released his Pokémon from a Love Ball. "Go, Dragonite."
The crowd gasped as Wu Ye's Dragonite appeared on the battlefield. Its yellow scales gleamed under the lights, its presence radiating power.
"Oh, oh, oh! A Dragonite!" Leo shouted in excitement. "Known as 'the Pokémon closest to a god,' can Dragonite secure the victory Wu Ye is aiming for?"
Rhyperior stood its ground, glaring fiercely at Dragonite, while Dragonite hovered gracefully, its eyes locked on its opponent.
"Lu Cheng, who do you think will win?" Mu Mei asked, looking at the two Pokémon with a hint of nervousness.
Lu Cheng instinctively used his system's magnifying glass to analyze the Pokémon on the field. He was astonished by their move sets.
Rhyperior.
Nature: Careful.
Ability: Solid Rock.
Moveset: Protect, Earthquake, Dig, Megahorn, Ice Beam, Stone Edge, Horn Drill.
Evaluation: Proud of its strength.
On the other side, Dragonite was even more impressive.
Dragonite.
Nature: Adamant.
Ability: Inner Focus.
Moveset: Dragon Dance, Thunderbolt, Safeguard, Fire Blast, Blizzard, Hyper Beam, Dragon Pulse, Outrage.
Evaluation: Seems a bit vain.
Lu Cheng's eyes widened in awe. Dragonite had mastered an incredible eight moves, covering a range of types that made it a formidable opponent. The sheer versatility of Dragonite's abilities explained why it was often called "The Pokémon Closest to a God."
"This is going to be one intense battle," Lu Cheng whispered, his excitement growing by the second. "I can't wait to see how they use their strategies in this match."
The anticipation in the air was electric as the crowd held its breath, ready for the showdown of a lifetime.
