章節 25: Hunted [ I ]
Nyx, Lucas, and Viktor sat around a flickering fire late into the night, the glow casting long shadows against the backdrop of debris and the ruins of broken buildings. The air was thick with tension, the remnants of their recent battles lingering in the silence.
From behind an overturned bus, a faint chuckle broke through the stillness.
"Hehehe... he," a small, hunched figure whispered, barely visible in the dim light. With a freckled grin plastered across his face, the gremlin-like man rubbed his hands together in delight, although it was a delight he had yet to fully experience.
"Three more idiots," he muttered to himself, his eyes gleaming with mischief. He paused for a moment, pondering the masked figures before him. "They're all wearing masks, though... I don't think the boss would like that," he added, his voice trailing off as a plan began to form in his mind. "As long as there's a woman, the boss will reward me even more."
The little freckled man had no original strategy of his own; he relied on the tactics his boss had imparted to him. "I'll use the plan the boss said," he declared with a hint of excitement.
Suddenly, he let out a loud, exaggerated scream. "Ahhhh!!" But the night swallowed his cries, leaving only silence in their wake.
'They must not have heard me,' he thought, frustration creeping in. "Help!!" he shouted again, but once more, silence answered.
"Are those idiots deaf?" he grumbled, irritation bubbling within him.
Just then, a voice broke through the quiet. "Who's there?" It was Viktor, his tone sharp and alert.
The little man felt a rush of hope. Nice, I snagged one of them at least, he thought, lying partially pinned beneath rubble. "I'm stuck!" he called out, attempting to sound pitiful.
Viktor approached with a judgmental gaze, silently questioning the little man's intelligence.
A short while later, the small figure found himself near the fire, joining the trio. The atmosphere remained tense, punctuated only by the crackling of the flames. Lucas, hidden behind his mask, stifled a snicker.
Lucas wore the Mask of Great Desire, its radiant yellow surface adorned with a wide, false smile that seemed to mask a more sinister intention beneath. It exuded a deceptive cheerfulness, as if everything were fine, though anyone with a keen eye would sense the malevolence lurking just beneath.
Viktor's Mask of Bloodshot retained its ominous look, but its function had evolved.
