章節 45: Internships with Last laser: Part 4

The next day after having all the previous day to rest and process everything, Doryoku was in front of Last laser while both of them were sitting in the living room.

"Okay, let's move on to the third and probably last test" Last laser said in an explanatory and serious tone as Doryoku listened carefully.

"This test is quite easy to guess actually, it's about your lack of control in combat due to your null ability to control your feelings" Last laser said in an explanatory tone while Doryoku nodded expectantly.

"What do I have to do Laser-sensei? Don't tell me that you will give me another Rubik's cube" Doryoku said with some impatience and even fear of finding himself with another test as frustrating as that.

"I told you before, didn't I? Thoughts and feelings repel each other, as long as you have a cool head it's as easy as that" Last laser said in an explanatory tone as Doryoku understood the point.

"But, that would only work in a normal case, if you go back to being the same empty shell it would be a step backwards, so we will follow the best option that occurred to me" Last laser said with a warning tone as he spoke slowly.

"You see boy, life is really simple, people with great logic just figure out how the world works and it becomes boring and monotonous, the same thing that happened to you until you decided to just stop thinking" said Last laser giving a point that Doryoku understood perfectly.

"Feelings work like that irrational escape that we all must have, they make our lives very complex but at the same time that complexity makes it worth living, that's something I've felt all my life" said Last laser with a wise and quite tone.

"What's the point of all this? It's simple, I don't want you to become an expressionless analytical machine and you probably don't either, that's why I want you to understand, what you do best" said Last laser with a serious tone while Doryoku he seemed quite confused.

"Understand what?" Doryoku asked quite curiously on the subject.

"To people and what they feel boy, don't lose control because you could hurt others, focus, think, understand and above all feel, whatever it takes to fulfill your mission" said Last laser making Doryoku understand... almost.

"But what I am supposed to understand itself?" Doryoku said without having any idea and showing again that his emotional intelligence was zero.

"That's the test, look for a reason to help others, something that only you understand and feel is enough, think of it every time you're at your limit and you'll never lose control" Last laser said calmly as he got up from the floor and walked slowly out of the room.

Doryoku pondered a lot about Last laser's words, and the first thing that came to his mind was that time he thought he was a hero because there are more people who have loved ones to return to.

That reason was good enough, but it wasn't enough, besides that unlike before, Doryoku didn't need other people's happiness to feel happy.

Why save others? That question was probably the most complex Doryoku had ever asked himself, to the point where Doryoku had no idea how to even begin to come up with an answer.

There were no shortcuts, the answer had to be strong enough to always maintain sanity, something that came from within, and above all the real reason to be a hero.

'I didn't expect less of a test from Laser-sensei, but this will be very complex, is thinking even the way to find an answer to this?' Doryoku thought with too many doubts about the same doubts and thoughts of him.

At this moment Doryoku's mind was an absolute mess, so he looked for other ways like sitting down and just stop thinking to start feeling again.

But even with all day trying repeatedly there was no way, and it only led to a very cruel but at the same time very human question from Doryoku, 'why should I help others?'

And although it was cruel was the question that had to be answered, if Doryoku was sure of something, it was that he did not have a heroic spirit to give his life for anyone, that was pure sentimentality and he had barely reconnected with his feelings.

He wouldn't give his life for a stranger, dying would mean failing his mother and breaking his promise and NOTHING was above his mother.

It had to be something that he understood and shared with others, something that is indeed what Last laser mentioned, something that only he understands.

And while he didn't have an answer, at least Doryoku was beginning to get an idea of how to start finding that answer.

The days passed quickly making the internships reach the first week and Doryoku went on and on thinking of possible options but none were strong enough.

He was not looking for a reason to simply give his life for anyone, but he was looking for a reason to help others with all his might, something that would work as motivation, which was what he really needed.

While Doryoku continued in his meditations on the subject, Last laser was upstairs reviewing several documents to try not to think about something that had tormented him these last few days.

Why haven't they attacked?

The informants around only meant one thing and that was that someone was looking for a weakness in him to exploit, but it had already been almost 3 weeks since his arrival and nothing had happened.

Last laser couldn't quite figure out this dilemma, there were too many options and choosing one made each scenario branch out into even more variables.

Maybe it was some new way to torment him? That was the most feasible option knowing who was behind it all, but still the lack of movement was far worse than any attempted attack.

Last laser just stopped thinking about it and kept arranging his things while he looked for ways to distract himself.

The boy was currently in his eternal thought mode, sometimes it was so exaggerated that he had to tell him that it was already night, but something curious is that he never forgot to call his mother.

It was always entertaining to see what the boy had to offer, even if he is very inexpressive you can quickly tell that there is a lot he wants to express, all this in a strange but quite interesting way.

Until now there was no doubt about his talent, the way he had to understand everything from all angles was an ability that some heroes and even people could only dream of having.

This combined with a quirk of his caliber made him a future top 10 at the very least, but it seems it was much more than he thought.

It was a pleasant surprise to know than that boy could see beyond what the world told him, understanding what a villain really is even if no one even gave him a clue.

He now knew that, at least one hero would not collapse along with the rest like a playing card if peace disappears again, something that brought him a lot of peace of mind and even more knowing that he was the guide of that hero.

Anyway, the night came quickly before Last laser realized after so much rambling, so he simply arranged everything on his desk and then walked to the door to get some dinner.

But just at that moment, there was something, or rather the lack of something, that disturbed Last Laser's calm and made him stop.

'An informant is missing... Now there are only six' Last laser thought seriously as he instantly noticed how one of the most difficult presences to detect had disappeared.

This was the first movement, something that brought calm and at the same time enough warnings to Last laser, although it would be best to wait and see what happened.

If he wasn't sure that the boy wasn't in mortal danger he would have sent him home or not even brought him, but it's obvious that they only want him, since Doryoku can only feel the looks when he is in an easy place to observe unlike him who is always observed from all angles wherever he is.

Last laser went downstairs and walked to the living room where he found Doryoku in a pensive pose as usual in recent days, so he hit him on the head to get him out of this state.

"Ouch, that hurt" Doryoku said snapping out of his trance and groaning slightly in pain as he rubbed his head.

"If it doesn't hurt it doesn't work, in your case it's literal" Last laser said shrugging his shoulders and knowing that there was no other way to get him out of his trance.

"Boy, there's movement outside with informants and one of them is missing, so I want to know, what do you think you should do if something bad happens?" Last laser said with a serious tone and testing Doryoku's judgement.

"I should run away right? You said they were here just for you, so there are no innocents in danger, no reason to fight" Doryoku said thoughtfully as Last laser nodded in approval.

"Well, there's no more to talk about it then, you know what to do. By the way, it's already night" Last laser said walking towards the kitchen and turning around for a moment to clarify that last point.

*Grrrr*

That was the sound of Doryoku's stomach due to hunger and a little nervousness from what Last laser said.

Even so, there was already a plan just in case, so he decided to calm down a bit and find something to eat as well.

—————————

In the middle of the morning, after midnight, Last Laser's home was completely quiet.

Doryoku slept peacefully in the guest room in a deep sleep after being so mentally tired the last few days.

As for Last Laser, it could also be said that he was sleeping, although his sleep was anything but deep, since even the slightest sudden movement could wake him up.

And the tranquility remained, at least until...

*Ring Ring*

Last laser's phone rang, waking him up instantly, so he decided to get up and walk to his desk to see who had called him.

'It's probably Command, surely a very talented bartender was found' thought Last laser with some annoyance as he took the phone.

Despite staying somewhat conscious when sleeping, his eyesight was still affected by sleep, after all it was something common biologically speaking and the bright cell phone screen didn't help.

Last laser unlocked the phone almost automatically and lowered the brightness to a minimum so that the message could be easily read.

And reading the message quickly, he had to stop and reread it more carefully and seriously.

'{8 km south, 4 km east, tomorrow at 2:00 a.m. don't miss laser}' was the message from the unknown number that Last laser received, something simple, which was the worst.

'Interesting... the place is not very desolate but there are hardly any heroes either because there have been no recent crimes, an expert' thought Last laser instantly understanding what kind of person he was dealing with.

The safe zones were the most insecure places ironically, no hero would want to just walk where nothing happens, and to his misfortune this zone was pretty safe almost entirely.

And the timing was also terrible, plus it would be difficult for a hero to appear, it would be much more so unless said hero is truly dedicated, a rarity these days.

'I guess it's best to rest for now, being half asleep tomorrow is not a good idea' thought Last laser seriously but also quite tired due to his lack of sleep the last few days.

All the energy would be needed for tomorrow.
