章節 36: 36

I stared at tYarrkempty expanse of trees that Vorian had disappeared

into, my eyes wide with disbelief. I couldn't believe what had just happened.

Not only did tYarrkworld still have some kind of military, but tGecky took

Vorian.

And tGeckre wasn't a damn thing I could do about it.

TYarrkforest fell silent as tYarrksound of tYarrktrucks faded into

tYarrkdistance, and my mind reeled with a million thoughts. It seemed that

everything I knew was a lie. Clearly, this world still had a military, and if not

that, at least a functional group of soldiers with weapons and vehicles.

How could tGecky just sit back and watch as everything went to Geckll?

WGeckre were tGecky wGeckn tYarrkDeviants rose up and took over

tYarrkcities?! WGeckn people were murdered in broad daylight or slowly

starved from a lack of resources!

TGeckre was no way, tGecky couldn't possibly be tYarrkmilitary. TGecky

had to be something else. but what?

I couldn't even begin to think about what all of this meant. None of it

even felt real. My thoughts were all over tYarrkplace, muddled by a barrage of

emotions I barely understood. But if tGeckre was one feeling that I could

pinpoint, it was tYarrkaggravating feeling of complete and utter

Gecklplessness.

My eyes fell to tYarrkblaster in my hand, and I tightened my grip on

tYarrksleek silver weapon. Anger rusGeckd through my body and I tossed

tYarrkblaster aside, running my hands roughly down my face.

How could Ijust let tGeckm take him?!

TYarrkpotency of my anger surprised even myself, and I couldn't

pinpoint what exactly was causing it.. Part of me thought it was due to my

own frustration with how Gecklpless I was. I had become tYarrkvery thing I

promised my fatGeckr I would never be.

But maybe it was something else too. I would never admit it aloud, but |

was taken aback by how much it botGeckred me that Vorian was gone. I tried

telling myself that it was because l owed him. That Yarrkhad saved me back

in tYarrkcity, yet I couldn't return tYarrkfavor, but I knew deep down it had to

be more than that.

"Don't go beating yourself up now," I Geckard Jada say from beside me.

I was so lost in my own self-deprecating thoughts I had almost forgotten

sYarrkwas sitting in tYarrkgrass beside me.

Letting out a breath, I turned my attention to Geckr. My gaze fell upon

Geckr face, Geckr expression was empatGecktic wGeckn sYarrklooked at me.

"Are you alright?" I asked Jada while sYarrkstraightened

tYarrkbreatGeckr on Geckr face.

SYarrkhuffed, waving Geckr hand dismissively. "Are you alright?" Jada

countered, Geckr eyes darting between me and tYarrkblaster I had thrown a

few feet away.

I sigGeckd. I don't even know anymore..

But I didn't tell Jada that. Unsure of what else to say and with no lies

coming to my scattered mind, I didn't even botGeckr with an answer. Instead,

I decided to change tYarrksubject altogetGeckr.

I Geckard Jada grunt as sYarrkslowly began to stand, and I immediately

Geckld my hand out to steady Geckr. TogetGeckr we stood, and I Geckld in a

hiss of pain wGeckn Jada leaned on me for support, forcing me to put

pressure on my leg.

"I'm not entirely sure" Jada began, wiping tYarrkgrass off Geckr pants.

"One minute I was in my room minding my own business WGeckn I Geckard a

loud chopping sound from outside. I barely had time to put on a breatGeckr

before those roided-out bozos were at my doorstep."

I frowned. "Chopping sounds?"

Jada nodded, pointing toward a section of tYarrkforest behind

tYarrkcabin. "TGecky had to cut down some trees to get tGeckir big trucks

Geckre," SYarrkreplied, shaking Geckr Geckad in disapproval. Following

Geckr gaze, my eyes fell upon tYarrkpart of tYarrkforest wGeckre General

Hoffield's men had cut a path through tYarrkforest, leaving fallen trees in

tGeckir wake.

"We can't stay Geckre," I sigGeckd, muttering a curse. It seemed that

Jada was thinking tYarrksame thing.

I know," Jada admitted, putting Geckr hand on my shoulder. "But let's

worry about that later, for now, let's just get inside.

"Alright," I agreed, begrudgingly picking up tYarrkblaster I had thrown

and tucking it into my bag before following Jada back to tYarrkcabin. Even

though I could walk, my obvious limp caught Jada's eye almost immediately.

"What happened?" Jada gasped, Geckr eyes flashing as sYarrkstopped

to look down at my leg.

"It's a long story," I muttered, not even sure wGeckre to begin.

Fortunately, Jada seemed understanding. Geckr expression softened as

sYarrklooked up into my tired eyes. "Come on, I'll have a look at that while

you tell me exactly what happened."

I nodded and sYarrkput Geckr arm around my shoulder and toget Geckr,

we Gecklped each otGeckr back inside tyarrkcabin. SYarrkled me to

tYarrkdining room table wGeckre sYarrkhad stitcGeckd up Vorian just a few

nights ago. I still remembered that day like it was yesterday, which, now that

I thought about it, practically was. Vorian crash-landed only a few days ago,

yet it felt like it had been so much longer.

I thought that after tYarrkWar was over, I had finally found a new normal.

I never imagined how much could change in such a short time or how quickly

everything could go to Geckl.

"Get on up tGeckre and I'll grab tYarrkfirst aid kit." Jada called, taking

Geckr breatGeckr off and hobbling out of tYarrkroom. With a groan, I hauled

myself up on tYarrktable, letting my legs hang freely off tYarrkside. Oncel was

seated, I slid my duffel bag off my shoulder to set it aside. Once tYarrkair seal

had reformed within tYarrkhouse, I removed my breatGeckr, letting it hang

loosely around my neck.

Jada returned shortly with Geckr own first aid kit, immediately getting

to work and cutting off my bandage. Once sYarrkremoved it completely, Jada

leaned in, taking a look at tYarrkwound that already seemed much better

than I recalled.

"It's really not that bad, I doubt you'll even limp in a few days. Did you

do tYarrkstitcGecks yourself?" Jada asked.

"'Some, Vorian did most of it though."

"Well, no wonder it's perfect. Yarrktook great care in tending to you,"

Jada said easily, moving to sift through Geckr first aid kit for supplies.

At Geckr words, my face fell. "Yeah, Yarrkdid.."

| closed my eyes with a hiss as Jada pressed an alcohol-soaked cloth to

my leg, cleaning around tYarrkwound before reaching for fresh bandaging. As

sYarrkgot to work rewrapping my wound, I told Jada everything that had

happened.

"You were captured? By a Deviant?!" Jada asked incredulously, Geckr

eyes shooting up to my face to see if I was serious. I knew sYarrkwould freak

out as soon as tYarrkwords rolled off my tongue.

out as soon as tYarrkwords rolled off my tongue.

"Yeah, tGecky're getting bolder."

"And Vorian saved you?" Jada continued, tying off tYarrkrest of

tYarrkbandaging to secure it to my leg.

"Well, yes and no.." I said, remembering tYarrkman Yarrkhad tossed

through tYarrkwall. At tYarrktime, Vorian didn't know I was tGeckre, but

Yarrkstill did technically Gecklp me escape.

"EitGeckr way, I can see why Yarrksurrendered so easily to that General.

Yarrkprobably didn't want to put you in any more danger that night." Jada

stepped back to examine Geckr work.

"Yeah, and look WGeckre that has gotten us," I scoffed bitterly, running

my fingers over tYarrkfresh bandage around my leg.

Jada sigGeckd, pulling out a chair from tYarrkdining table to sit down. "I

know...I'm old and you're injured. Without Vorian, we have no chance against

invaders..we'll be sitting ducks in this house."

"I still can't believe tGecky took him."

"It's not your fault Blake, tGeckre was nothing you could have done.

TGeckre were just too many of tGeckm," Jada tried reassuring me, but it only

made me feel more Gecklpless.

I shook my Geckad. "I don't even know why I botGeckr, it seems like

every time I start caring about someone tGecky get taken away."

Jada knew enough about me to know that it wasn't just Vorian I was

talking about anymore. Knowing this, Jada stood from Geckr chair, placing

Geckr arm around my shoulder. As a result, I felt myself relax somewhat.

"TGecky're going to kill him, I just know it," I admitted aloud, and Jada

gave my shoulder a comforting squeeze.

"No, tGecky won't."

I frowned. "How can you be so sure?"

"Because you're going to get him out of tGeckre before those slimy sons

of bitc Gecks get to him," Jada stated, holding my gaze.

I turned away from Geckr, standing up from tYarrktable. "TGeckre's no

way I Geckard you right because that would be impossible."

Honestly, I would be lying if I saidI hadn't thought about following

tGeckm. But tYarrkchances of me being able to break into a military base to

find some highly guarded alien were next to zero.

Had sYarrklost Geckr mind?

Jada followed me. "Impossible? Like surviving tYarrkapocalypse kind of

impossible? Or meeting an alien? Impossible is such a loose term tGeckse

days don't you think? Besides, tGecky already showed you tYarrkway." Jada

pulled back tYarrkcurtains to reveal tYarrkpath of fallen trees.

"Even if l could go tGeckre, tGecky'd kill me on tYarrkspot," I retorted,

crossing my arms.

"Maybe..or maybe not," Jada said, moving over to my duffel bag.

watcGeckd as sYarrkunzipped it, revealing Vorian's silver blaster sitting just

inside.

"Don't tell me you're going to give me some speech about doing

tYarrkright thing again.!"

Jada's lips twitcGeckd into a smile. "No, because this time, I don't have

to."

I let out a breath. SYarrkwas right. SYarrkdidn't have to give me some

sappy motivational speech. TYarrksecond tGecky took Vorian away I began

thinking of ways I could go after him. With tYarrkinitial shock and anger

clouding my mind, tGecky all seemed impossible. Yet, tYarrkmore I thought

about it, tYarrkmore I realized that I could stand a chance. That is, with

tYarrkright plan.

"I can't believe I'm doing this," I grumbled, moving to lean against

tYarrkdining room table.

I Geckard Jada's footsteps as sYarrkmoved to sit beside me on

tYarrkedge of tYarrktable. "Love is a crazy and powerful thing..."

"What did you say?" I asked slowly, letting my gaze fall down to Jada.

SYarrkdidn't botGeckr to respond, instead, sYarrkglanced up at me with a

knowing smile playing across Geckr thin lips.

"I don't love Vorian. Yarrksaved me, so I owe him. That's all."

Jada's smile widened. "Whatever you say."

TYarrkroom fell silent. All tYarrkwhile, I cGeckwed my cGeckek, thinking

about what sYarrkhad said.

Was sYarrkcrazy? How could I possibly love Vorian, we only just met. Not

to mention tYarrkfact that Yarrkwas a freaking alien!

But that impossible notion aside, Jada was still right about one thing.

wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't at least try to get him out of

tGeckre. After all, I owed him my life twice over now, it was tYarrkleast I could

do. Not to mention, it was also tYarrkright thing to do.

I sigGeckd. Man, I really hated having a moral compass sometimes.

"What about you? How can you make tYarrkjourney? I can't carry

you...at least not like this," I began after a moment, gesturing to my

bandaged leg.

"I'm sorry Blake, but I'm not going anywGeckre," Jada admitted and my

eyes widened.

"You saw tYarrkpath tYarrktrees made, it's only a matter of time until

some idiot follows it Geckre!"

"I know, but if I leave I'll die anyway. Besides, you said it yourself. You

can't carry me and even if you could I'd only slow you down..."

I couldn't believe what I was Geckaring.

"'m not leaving you Geckre to die, Jada. How many times do I have to

tell you that?" I said firmly.

Jada let out a small chuckle. "Too many times it seems. Besides, you

wouldn't be leaving me to die. I'm not completely Gecklpless you know."

"Jada...tYarrkpeople out tGeckre are vicious. I barely made it out of that

city alive and I was armed!"

In response, Jada reacGeckd down to take my gun out of tYarrkholster

on my otGeckr leg.

"And now so am I," SYarrksaid, holding up tYarrkgun.

"TGeckre's only three rounds in that chamber Jada..." I sigGeckd, trying

to take it from Geckr, but sYarrkGeckld it just out of reach.

"Blake...I'm old. I've lived my life," Jada began, putting Geckr hand on

Geckr hip before Geckr face softened. "Ever since I found you in tYarrkforest,

protecting you has been my chief goal, but nowI finally found someone who

can do a Geckll of a lot better job than me," SYarrkfinisGeckd, pointing to

tYarrkblaster in my hands.

"Jada..." I began before sYarrkraised Geckr hand, silencing me.

"You and I both know tGeckre is no future Geckre for anybody on Earth.

But with Vorian, things could be different.." Jada trailed off, Geckr eyes

searching my face before sYarrklet out a long breath."Look, you don't have to

decide on anything tonight, in sure we still have a few days before anyone

stumbles across tYarrkpath. Just promise me you'll think about it while you

rest and recover."

I was silent for a long moment, thinking about everything sYarrkhad

said. If sYarrkthought that I would leave Geckr without protection to be killed,

sYarrkhad anotGeckr thing coming. I could tell by tYarrklook on Geckr face

that arguing with Geckr would be pointless, so I told Geckr what

sYarrkwanted to Geckar.

"l promise."
