The journey to Lamia's territory was long when coming from west turf. I ran fast behind Fang's guidance. We took a short cut through shadows. It was hard to explain it but our spirits were running on the other side. We left our bodies behind to take this journey. The scent of blood and death was strong when we hit the boarders. We slipped past mangled rogues that were protecting the town. The rogues were spread out strategically in the forest. They didn't see us coming. They didn't detect us here. I could smell the town wasn't far off. The sun was setting and making the lights of the town come to life. Visible in the tree line. I could tell the town was massive. It was a secret spot away from the rest of the world. Getting closer, I could tell we entered a clear line. A witches' spell to hide the town. If you weren't familiar with a supernatural or one yourself... it would be impossible to cross it. I studied spells away at college. An extra club, more like it. To an untrained eye, like my sister? She'd never notice a witch or a spell this massive.
Someone loves this vampire coven. Enough to protect them with such a big spell.
I had a feeling Fang had other intentions of coming here besides letting me see Eder. I think he wanted to spy on Lamia. Fang was huge in his wolf form and burning red. I could run straight under him and never touch his belly.
Fang didn't know how much I hate being in my wolf form. I struggled to keep up with him because I didn't have a whole lot of training in this form. I had enough to survive in it. I guess not- since I couldn't take on that rogue from before.
Why am I so weak?
It was something I always hated. I felt like I wasn't strong enough compared to my older siblings. I could never protect them. And, one day I will have to. I have to grow stronger to help Vivienne.
"Oh~ You probably don't know but Vivienne made it back to the pack," Fang told me as he tried to make small talk. We were dodging trees. "She misses you."
"Viv's never expressed those feelings," I chuckled out. "She doesn't know I even exist outside of family events."
"She's worried about her little brothers," Fang mumbled. "But she also told me Niall is the traitor in the pack. He plotted to pin your attempted kidnap on Donovan. Lamia was behind setting him up. Perhaps it was a test. Lucky, you had some friends save you."
"Yes, Marquis and his brother Sowle," I mumbled as I remembered their kindness. Marquis had been the one to try to cover up the phone evidence on my sister's kidnapping. But, I interfered and things got complicated for him. Because of it... I put myself in danger. And my brother is now compromised and my sister is safely back in pack territory. "Who brought my sister home?" I asked curiously. Surely she didn't escape alone.
"I don't recall her telling me," he muttered as he thought about it. "She's keeping it a secret."
"You don't think one of the two helped her as well?" I asked softly. There's no way they- in the short amount of time? No, if someone helped her it was someone in that castle I don't know.
"No. I don't think that at all."
The forest opened up as we came up on the town. Dirt turning to cobblestone under our feet. This was my first time being here but I recognized the town thanks to photos. In my after school club, we had kept up small notes on the towns marked as 'free' territory. What it meant was there were slim rules here. It was a town ran by blood cartels, slave auctions, and vampire freaks. This was a vampire coven, powerful and known. Because Lamia came here and established it to be a free territory of her rein. She wanted the best for her people here. Meaning, 'do as you please... just don't piss me off.'
The castle was obvious as it sat on top of a hill above the town. The whole place was Victorian gothic. Like that's the period they chose to stay in here. Sure, technology was around us but there weren't cars in the town. Like it was off limits to use them. Or, maybe it's because it's a town full of vampires. They don't need cars when they can run where they want to go... or in some cases disappear, teleport, vanish...
"Come," Fang's order rung in my ears as he took me up the unfamiliar hill. The town falling behind us. As we rounded the hill, knights were marching down the hill. In military vests. They looked like they were going to battle as they marched in formation. Someone yelling orders to them to wait in the town square.
"Fang," I barked out in alarm as we finished running past them. "It looks like they're going to war tonight," I blurted out.
"Looks normal to me," Fang said as his ear twitched. He sounded like he was trying to convince himself not me. I looked forward, seeing we made it to gates. I heard an alarming pained howl. It was familiar as I placed it to Cole's voice. He was screaming in pain, but in his wolf form.
"That's Cole," I told him as I slipped through the metal bars of the gate and ran for the sound it came from. Surprisingly, Fang was hot on my trail like he had moved at the same time I did. I lead him towards the entrance of the castle since that's where I heard my brother.
I found Cole transformed back into his human form. He was applying pressure to an injury on his leg. It looked like a blade slit it open. Cole was trying to run away, but failed. His predator was an order looking man. He was bald with a gray beard. He was in a butler's uniform but half his uniform was cut off on his leg. Instead of a leg he had a metal blade. I could only recognize it as the half of a scythe. His leg was bleeding as well as his skin was punctured by the blade. It was formed- fused onto his skin. I wasn't sure if it was natural. I was in shock. Fang grabbed the back of my neck to stop me from getting closer. I wouldn't be able to intervene no how. Cole cried as he clutched his injury. His medical training was probably telling him to surrender and beg for help.
"W-what is that sticking out of his leg?" I asked as I looked at the butler's bazar leg.
"That's Meynard. He's an enchanted scythe made for Lamia's use. He's her greatest weapon and advantage in any situation. He also makes a fine cup of tea," Fang growled out in anger. "I didn't realize he was immortal." He let my neck go as we watched my brother's situation playing out.
"See kid?" Meynard's voice echoed out. "We warned you if you try to escape," he tsked out. "We will have to kill you."
"NOT on my watch," Niall's voice growled out. I flipped around in shock. Whoa! Niall!? He's going to rescue our brother...
"Stay out of this Niall," Meynard hissed through his teeth. His leg transformed and I understood he was in severe pain as he grew a leg and the blade seemed to form into his bones and disappear. "It's direct orders from Lamia."
"I'm as high as Lamia on the list. My brother is pardoned. See to it he gets the medical attention he needs right away." Niall growled as he passed through us. We were like ghosts here. He walked up and looked down at Cole. My little brother looked at him and gave him the middle finger.
"Fuck you, monster. I didn't need your help," Cole snapped at him. Niall growled in annoyance and leaned down, snatching Cole's head into his hand. He yanked on his hair as he pulled him up to make him stand. He growled as he opened his jaws and looked ready to bite my brother's neck open. Niall was already pissed feeling. I could tell something else was eating at him or he wouldn't be so angry.
"What did you say to me?" Niall asked. "I am your alpha," he growled into his ear.
"Never," Cole said. Oh, no Cole... Don't do it... I watched as he spit in my other brother's face.
"I was trying to look out for my sweet innocent brother.... But I guess he's not here," Niall growled through clenched jaws as he was trying to restrain himself. He really wants to keep his family alive.
"It's like he wants to die. Cole is so ignorant," I told Fang.
"He's not certain he'll live much longer," Fang told me. "When people know they're going to die... They'll do stupid things."
Fang took a step forward to alert me it was time to move on. "We're not here to watch their brotherly brawl. I don't believe Niall would kill Cole over a little drool. Let's get to Eder's bedroom like we came here to do." I nodded in agreement. I was still mad at Cole anyway. He got himself into this mess... He came here willingly. He can get himself out of it on his own. Which is surprising that he's got so far from Emmett without being locked up. Emmett as a vampire is probably way worse then he used to be as a werewolf.
"Cole!" I heard Cal's howl echo through the castle's front entrance. Before we could get a foot into the door... Cal was leaping through us. I had to stop then to see this. I turned back around as I saw Cal taking Niall out in a single blow. He didn't strike him dead. But he had him on the ground and his head in his jaws. He was growling and I felt like he was about to win this. Cole and Cal are going to make a run for it. Looks like they were plotting this together and Cal was waiting for the right time to strike. I smelled blood in the entrance of the castle. Alerting me that Cal had fought off quite a few people to get this far. Cal had a lot of wounds and scars across his wolf's form. It was alarming since I haven't seen him in so long. In fact, I thought he was already dead. I felt like leaping with joy. I watched as Cal's jaws clenched together and Niall yelled. His scream made bats fly in the sky and away from the castle.
I felt my breath catch. I couldn't warn Cal as I saw it coming before he could. Meynard's arm transformed into the same style blade. He swung it like another extension of himself. I tensed up as I watched wide eyed. His aim hitting Cal across his lower waist. His body split in half. Like in one of those horror scenes where a victim gets cut in half. Blood and guts hit Niall's body as he looked mid-transformation. Cole screamed in shock. His arms flailing but he didn't know which way to go. To Cal's last moments of breath or to the farthest spot possible from the blade. He trembled as he looked at Niall. Niall out of all three of them. Niall shoved Cal off of him as he looked in his eyes. He growled as his head shot towards Meynard.
"I know you don't have emotions and just act to protect what you've been ordered to do... BUT THAT WAS A BIG NO-NO!" Niall yelled at him. "LAMIA!" He yelled for her like she would be able to help their situation.
I didn't notice I was shaking until Fang brushed his body against me to move me into the building at away from that. "I'm sorry you saw that," Fang told me as he urged me to move on with his nose. "We have to keep going. There's nothing we can do for them in this form." I choked on tears as I agreed to keep moving. There's not much longer before we get to what we came here for.
