That was not the question he intended to ask her. So, where did that come from? What was wrong with him? And worse, why did her answer matter to him?
Because he still loved her. His mind nagged at him. He never stopped and probably never will. But still, it was not the issue. What he felt about her did not matter.
She might not be married, but he was. He could not go fooling around, not under their present situation. They might have a daughter. But they could never be together unless their circumstances changed.
"My lack of a husband is no concern of yours." She eventually answered his question, looking in his direction. "I thought you invited me here to talk about our daughter."
He could see he might have struck a nerve as her demeanor changed, turning their situation into another awkward moment. And he only had himself to blame for that, he and his stupid curiosity.
