Chapter 13: Finding Refuge in Faith

The world had begun to press in from all sides. With each passing day, the weight of survival felt heavier, the temptation to abandon my values more seductive. Yet, in the midst of my struggles, there was one thing that kept me from falling into the abyss—the quiet, unwavering refuge of my faith.

Faith had been a part of my life since childhood, though at times, it felt like just a flickering candle in the storm. Growing up in the village, we had no fancy church buildings or grand ceremonies. But the simple prayers my mother whispered each night, the hymns we sang in our small home, and the Bible stories she shared with us as she worked, had imprinted a sense of divine hope on my heart. My faith was never loud or visible, but it was always there, a quiet force that whispered that no matter how difficult life got, there was always something greater than the struggle—something that could carry me through.

But as the temptation to take the shortcut of easy money grew stronger, I found myself questioning the very faith that had once been my anchor. It felt like a battle between what was right and what was necessary, between the promise of a better life through deceit and the slow, painful route of hard work and integrity.

It was during this time of inner conflict that I met Elizabeth Michael.

Elizabeth, a woman of grace and conviction, had come into my life through a series of chance encounters. A native of Odolu LGA in Kogi State, she had relocated to Abuja some years ago, seeking a fresh start and a life filled with purpose. I had crossed paths with her several times at church events, but it wasn't until one evening, when I found myself drifting further away from the person I had worked so hard to be, that I truly connected with her.

I had reached a point where I felt torn between the demands of my circumstances and the pull of my values. My encounter with Nnamdi had left me at a crossroads—one direction offering me the potential to escape the misery of my poverty, and the other demanding that I stay true to my faith and hard-won principles. Elizabeth must have sensed the turmoil within me, for one evening, after a church service, she pulled me aside.

"Danjuma," she said, her voice gentle but firm, "I see the weight you carry. I know it's hard—life isn't fair. But I want to remind you of something important. Faith is not just about believing when things are easy. It's about trusting that the path God has for you, even when it's difficult, will lead to something greater than you can imagine."

Her words struck me deep. Here was a woman who had faced her own battles—leaving her home, carving out a new life in a big city, and holding on to her faith through all the challenges that came with being a young woman in an unfamiliar place. Despite the pressures, Elizabeth radiated peace, a calmness that I admired but couldn't quite grasp.

"I've been where you are," she continued, her voice steady and filled with experience. "When life pushes you to the edge, when you're faced with choices that seem impossible, the only thing that can keep you grounded is your faith. It doesn't promise an easy road, but it promises that you're never alone on that road."

Her words were like a balm to my restless soul. She spoke with such assurance, with a deep knowledge of the struggles I faced, and I felt as if God had sent her at that very moment to remind me of what I was about to forget—faith was my refuge. It was the thing that had carried me through my childhood, through the hardships, and it was the thing that would carry me now.

For the first time in a long while, I prayed sincerely that night. Not the hurried prayers I had said before, but a deep, earnest cry for guidance. "Lord, show me the way," I prayed, "Help me find the strength to resist the temptations that surround me. Help me remember the values my mother instilled in me. Guide me in Your truth, and give me the courage to trust that You have a plan for me, even when it seems uncertain."

In the days that followed, I found that my heart began to settle. The world outside still called to me with its false promises, but inside, I found a new kind of strength—a quiet assurance that the path I was on, though difficult, was the right one. Elizabeth's words echoed in my mind each time I encountered temptation: Faith is not just about believing when things are easy. It's about trusting when things are hard.

I no longer felt the same pull toward the life Nnamdi had offered me. His world, full of easy money and fast success, now seemed shallow and empty compared to the peace I felt in following God's guidance. My faith became a shield against the pressures of the world. When I encountered doubt or the lure of an easy life, I turned to God in prayer, asking for the wisdom to make the right choices.

Elizabeth continued to be a source of strength and encouragement during this time. She became my confidante, a woman whose life was a testament to the power of faith in action. She had come to Abuja with nothing but faith and a dream, and now, years later, she was thriving—not in material wealth, but in peace, purpose, and joy. She reminded me often that the things that truly matter—love, integrity, and purpose—were worth more than anything money could buy.

Through her, I saw that faith wasn't just about resisting temptation. It was about building a life grounded in something far more lasting than what the world had to offer. It was about trusting in God's timing, knowing that He would provide for me in ways I couldn't yet see.

Over time, the temptation to abandon my faith and take the shortcut became less powerful. It didn't vanish completely—there were still moments when I was tempted to cut corners or take risks that I knew were wrong—but the strength I found in my faith made those moments easier to resist. Every prayer, every reminder from Elizabeth, and every moment I spent reflecting on the sacrifices of my mother and the teachings of my childhood brought me back to the right path.

I began to understand that faith wasn't a shield against hardship, but rather, it was the strength that allowed me to endure it. It gave me the courage to keep going when everything around me seemed to be falling apart. It helped me find peace in the midst of struggle and purpose in the midst of chaos.

In the end, it was faith that helped me resist the temptations of an easy life. It was faith that kept me grounded when the world seemed to be offering everything I thought I wanted. And it was faith that reminded me, time and time again, that no matter how difficult the journey, the road paved with integrity and trust in God would always lead to something far greater than anything I could have imagined.

As I moved forward, I carried Elizabeth's words with me: Faith is not just about believing when things are easy. It's about trusting when things are hard. And in that trust, I found refuge, strength, and a new hope for the future.
