Lying in bed, Amy had felt that the atmosphere at the family dinner table was too affectionate, and then a strange sense of dissonance washed over her.

She hadn't expected the atmosphere, which had always felt too cozy, to make her feel uneasy now. She also felt that things she hadn't noticed before were catching her eye.

Fred Donovan did not like Rosa Donovan. But he didn't show it, only by the way he looked at her, otherwise, he had never done anything bad to her.

Amy couldn't understand why Fred Donovan tolerated Rosa even though he didn't like her. So she came up with two theories. Either his son, Jack Donovan, was putting up with it because Jack loved Rosa, or Rosa had a trump card that belonged to the Donovan family.

Amy thought both possibilities were likely. But she wondered what leverage there was to tie the hands of a man like her grandfather who had no tolerance for anyone.
