'What's happening to me? What's going on?'

Breathing heavily, I stand up slowly.

My head swims dizzily. Everything seems blurry around me.

It takes several moments before I realize that the door has been broken and my attacker has entered the church. He's holding a bloody axe above his head.

"I knew you would be waiting for me, Miss Ava. And I know you'll do whatever it takes to keep your secret safe. So I brought my own protection."

He swings the axe downward with such force that I shriek in horror. The blade slices into the wooden cross hanging over the altar.

I stare wide-eyed at the mess in horror.

"Those statues carved in wood and stone won't save you, Missy," he says, dropping the axe on the floor beside me. "They aren't real."
