章節 24: PROFILING THE KILLER

Meanwhile, Anton on the other hand clutched his arms around his chest. He kept his fingers tucked under his armpits to keep them warm as the cold air inside the room made its way towards him.

Santina's workplace was unconventionally cold but the rows of weird jarred specimens display on one corner of the room only made the place all the more unwelcoming.

Likewise, the presence of the sets of cadavers freezers added another layer of chill in the room, to the point that Anton could somehow felt the chill crawling from the exposed skin of his legs; from his knees, down to the wetness of the sock inside his shoes.

"Base on our recent findings, we believed that our suspect is a man, and he either worked in or around the dumpsite itself. It could be that he was also a familiar figure in the community since as per the result of the autopsies that we had conducted so far, there were no visible signs of struggle from any of the victims."

Mikael said after a short silence and Santina supported his claim right away.

"That may also explain why up until now, despite these mysterious killings going on for almost a year already, no one had ever noticed him yet. There is a high chance that our killer was not exactly a stranger in the place, if anything he may even be actually part of the everyday lives of the people living there."

As most of the victims of their case were found within the same dumpsite, albeit at different areas, it was only normal for the scope of their investigation to be focused mostly on that same area as well.

"In a sense, our killer was not far from a typical stalker. He waits for victims of opportunity. The watching, as well as the waiting, were just as important to him as the act itself."

Working on the same case for almost a year now, Santina had come to somehow understand the behavior of their mysterious killer.

She tried to understand the other party's every action as well as his possible reasons for doing this and that. From time to time, she would also try to think like him. In that way, they could make a convincing profile of their suspect.

"How about the time of attacks???"

Anton inquired, his eyes and ears were at his professor as he tried to listen to her attentively; eager to digest the pieces of information related to the case as much as he could.

This time, however, it was Mikael who answered Anton's inquiry.

"It was always in the last week of the month, considering all the factors and the deed always happened at the weekend. Mostly during Saturday evenings. Wise thinking if you would ask me as this would surely give him a window of opportunity to commit his crime since most of the men are drunk on Saturday evening"

"Why is that???"

Anton could not help but ask as he wondered what could be their basis for thinking that way and Mikael was patient enough to explain it to him using a matter of fact tone

"Well, you know, the typical weekly wage earners. Since their payday would most likely fall on Saturdays, then they would have some money to spare to have some fun."

Meanwhile, Santina, on the other hand, shifted on her seat and tapped her pen against her pad. When Mikael was already done speaking, she removed the cap of her pen with her mouth and scribbled the word 'victims' in her notes.

"He liked them small, all boys in particular. He stuns them first with just one heavy blow on the top of the head. Perhaps with a stone or anything handy as long as it is blunt."

She said afterward then she looked at Anton's direction as though she was talking to him directly.

"This suggests that our killer was not exactly strong since he still has the need to immobilize his victims first and it has to be done quickly as well. No room for error as he also would probably run in panicked if ever the victim does not fall unconscious right away and attempts to call for help instead.

Mikael on the other hand was busy rummaging through the pile of papers placed within a small box under Santina's table. When he finally found the paper that he was looking for, he taped it at the upper right-hand corner of the huge whiteboard situated at their front.

The paper contained the photocopy of a partial impression of a shoe.
