章節 19: How To Train Your Dragon

(I tried naming the pokemon but it honestly felt kinda weird to write so I just put it back to default. Also, I couldn't resist calling the chap that lol.)

Unlike Ralts, whose psychic typing gave her an enhanced mental capability, Dreepy operated mostly on instinct. That instinct told him I was his enemy, yet at the same time, I was his protector. I was the first person he had seen after he left the egg, so it had imprinted on me, but my fairy type made me look like an enemy to him. I could tell that the little devil was conflicted, and I didn't know how to help him. Whenever I tried to use my psychic powers to connect with him, he would snap at me and would try to bite me. The ghost-type instinct in him detecting my psionics as if I were his prey. So I called up Carolina for advice.

"You are in a unique position, kid. Usually, the imprinting process is enough to get most pokemon to listen to you. This is the first time I hear of a pokemon so vehemently refusing to listen to someone it was imprinted to." she answered in a serious tone.

Damn, so even she didn't know how to deal with my situation.

"If caught from the wild, you usually have to show your strength in order for the dragon-type pokemon to see you as an equal. To be honest, kid, I am not sure what you could do to impress Dreepy."

She stayed quiet for a few seconds before sighing and asking.

"You know I trust you, right? I see a bit of myself in you…"

I could only nod before answering.

"Yes, Professor."

She gave another sigh before saying.

"Since I know you are a smart kid, I am not gonna hold back my words. I'm trusting you will take this to heart. The pokemon I gave you has a lot of potential. I made sure to grab them from the strongest Dragapult I could find."

I knew that pseudo-legendary pokemon had a very low reproduction rate. So finding a baby from one must have been incredibly difficult.

"If you cannot get the Dreepy to listen to you, you are wasting his potential. A newborn pokemon needs to have an intense training regimen in order to develop properly, especially one with his potential. By letting him go wild on Magikarp and other weak pokemon all you are doing is ensuring he will never be able to grow. You might even prevent his evolution altogether. If he feels he is strong enough as he is, he will never evolve."

I couldn't help but feel guilty. She had put her reputation on the line by allowing me to have two starters, and all I was doing was throwing away all of her efforts.

"Kid, I know you are smart. If I could go down there to help you, I would, but I am dealing with something important that requires my attention right now. I cannot speak about it over the phone, but I am as busy as I have ever been. But do not throw away the trust I placed in you. I know you will be able to figure it out. I am sorry to have to leave this way, but I have to go. I'll try to ask around about your situation, but the longer you stall, the worse it will be for Dreepy."

The phone call was exhausting. I knew she was right, but I didn't know what to do.

He tolerated me ever since the Lake Verity incident, but that was about it. Because of it, he was falling behind when compared to Ralts. The little angel was truly the only thing keeping me sane when it came to dealing with him.

Taking in a deep breath after the phone call, I said to myself.

"Time to try a different method."

If I couldn't get the little devil to trust me. I would get him to respect me. We could work from there. Maybe by being patient and allowing him to Bite me without much repercussion, I was reinforcing the Hunter/Prey mentality. Ironic because I was both the hunter and the prey at the same time in his eyes, thanks to both of my types.

Picking up my hat in which he had been sleeping, I began walking towards Lake Verity. Dreepy has always wanted to avoid the Lake since the incident, so as I approached the entrance, I could feel him scurrying to hide under my hat.

My gut was telling me this was the right move, but my heart was honestly about to take a big hit.

"Yo Gyarados, it's time for the rematch." I screamed unto the lake, only to be met with silence.

Releasing my psychic powers into the lake, I felt the water in it begin to shake before the gigantic sea monster emerged. He clearly hadn't forgotten the war crimes from the past year, as he stared at me in absolute fury.

I removed my hat to expose the scared Dreepy before saying.

"Make sure to take a good look. I am only doing this once."

I knew I was in the wrong in what I was about to do. We had been the ones to come to its territory and had attacked his family. But sometimes, you have to do what you have to do.

The Gyarados began to move its body in a strange way, which led to clouds forming in the sky before heavy rain began to pour.

The little devil had run to hide behind a tree as it carefully looked at the fight that was about to happen.

The Gyarados began to charge a Hydro Pump, which, thanks to the rain, was going to be stronger than usual. I focused all of my psychic powers on the mind of the Gyarados. Causing it to lose focus and making the Hydro Pump explode right in front of his face forcing him to recoil.

This only seemed to anger the pokemon more as it let out a loud roar before launching towards me with a frosty coat of ice covering his fangs.

I extended my hand forward, I wasn't strong enough to stop the momentum of the pokemon, but I could nudge it slightly.

Bringing my hand down forcibly, I made the Gyarados' head crash against the ground in front of me before it was able to reach me. Taking in a deep breath to focus my mind once again, I placed my hand on the pokemon's head before it was able to shake off the slight dazzle from the crash.

I had researched this Z-move in the years after I came back from Olympia's school. It was something I didn't want to use. But I knew it would be only temporary damage, plus I would help the pokemon heal afterward, making sure to put him back together correctly. The mind was, after all, a fragile thing.

"Shattered Psyche."

The Gyarados's body became limp. Their mind had been rattled to the point where they couldn't even control their own body.

After that, I couldn't help but turn to the side and begin vomiting violently. The energy required to use such a move rattled my entire body. I could feel I was pushing it when I had changed the momentum of the pokemon, but that final move had pushed me over the line. I had a massive headache at the moment. I had never really practiced using offensive moves before other than in the controlled environment of Olympia's school. And even then, I had never done something of this level.

If I could help it, I would prefer to avoid attacking the mental states of my enemies. I was afraid of the damage that could be caused when attacking the mind directly. I knew it was stupid, but I mainly preferred to use my psychic powers to connect with pokemon and to make my life easier. But I made an exception today, I couldn't fail Carolina and Dreepy.

Once the after-effects of using a knockoff Shattered Psyche wore off, I stood up before turning to the little devil.

"I am your trainer. I will not allow you to waste your potential anymore. I care about you, and I want to see you grow. So from now on, you are going to listen to me. Understood?"

The little devil began to shake in slight fear before nodding its head.

Fear was better than hate… Right?

The headache I was experiencing felt worse than the times I had been beaten up during Fighting School. It was as if my head was about to explode, I wanted to go home and rest. But after I turned to the motionless Gyarados, I couldn't help but let out a sigh before placing my hand on its head and carefully putting the pieces back together. Pushing aside all of the discomforts my body was currently experiencing.

"I'm sorry…" I said to the Gyarados as I saw focus return to its eyes.

This sucked.

I didn't like harming pokemon. In addition to the massive headache, I could feel a massive wave of guilt wash over me.

"Is this what you expected when you told me to follow my gut?" I couldn't help but ask the sky. Hoping that my message would reach Alakazam.

Once the Gyarados had regained consciousness, I saw fear fill his eyes before it ran away deep into the lake.

The little devil left its hiding spot from behind the tree before making its way under my hat once again, not so long after the Gyarados had left.

I reached to pet the little devil before making my way back home. I could only be thankful my mother was away at the time, so she wouldn't have to see me this way.

I emptied my stomach three more times before I was able to fall asleep. Hoping that rest will be able to help me recover.

~Author's Note~

Wow, this chapter took me the longest to write. I went through like 5 different iterations over the course of 4.5 hours. Originally, this was supposed to cover the 5 years until his journey started. I had a lot of help during the process of writing this one, so hopefully, you all enjoyed it.

Anyways, I have been hearing rumors that the FBI wants to raid my wedding. So we have decided to elope to an undisclosed location, leaving the wedding we had planned as a decoy. Please send me your power stones so that I can pay for the honeymoon and the elopement.
